Please can anyone update me on having this card for travel. We have holidayed abroad for years within Europe and beyond but never chosen to opt for this facility, only to have a good travel insurance in place...I can see what it covers but any members views would be appreciated.

Always, always have good travel insurance Frilly. EHIC is great for minor injuries or illnesses but for anything major your insurance is invaluable. It may be an extra cost on your holiday but if you need it you will be grateful. I fractured a vertebrae on our boat earlier this month and spent 5 days on my back in the Corfu clinic before being airlifted by private jet back to the UK for surgery. The jet alone was 20k. I am not sure you would have been covered on EHIC.

You would not, the EHIC card only covers you for healthcare which is normally covered by a statutory health care system in the visited country, so does not render travel insurance obsolete.
ie: You would have been treated in Corfu General Hospital not Corfu Clinic which is private and it does not cover for repatriation.

On the mend thank you Frilly but it was very scary at the time. The care I received in Corfu and the UK was superb.
The hospital told me that a young lad who had a motorbike accident had been flown home a couple of weeks earlier and the cost to his parents for the plane was 40k as he did not have adequate insurance. The alternative would have been surgery in Corfu who do not have a specialised Neuro unit or Athens and then return on a standard flight with seats removed to accommodate a stretcher. Insurance is a 'no brainer'.
My insurance is with 'insure and go' but informed that travel insurance from your bank account are also very good.

Good stuff. One word of caution though is that if the insurance is in your husbands' name check you are covered if you travel without him. I never knew this was a condition until a friend mentioned it.

Your comments did make me check my policy and although it’s through my bank and free for me with my husband being an additional named family member we can travel independently so that was good to know. Thank you.

Glad to help. As you can guess I have heard some horror stories over the past few week so it was worth a mention. Wishing you an enjoyable and safe holiday.
