ITV have made a six part series based on Gerald Durrell's triology of his childhood on Corfu and is due to be broadcast soon. It was apparently filmed on Corfu in September 2015. Did anyone see any of the filming?

Only some parts were filmed in Corfu. Perhaps someone knows. Nice to see a programme without a lot of violence.

To my knowledge, it was all filmed in Corfu. The crew were there for about 6 weeks late last year.
Halikounas was the lake (also known as Lake Korrison). Also spotted The Old Fortress, Varipades, Arillas, Kontakali to name but a few.

They obviously had to use a bit of poetic licence as the series is set in the 1930's so they had to avoid the more modern areas.

The Durrells: Location Spotting:

I love location spotting and so this is what I have managed to piece together so far from episode 1 (including from comments on this forum). If anyone disagrees or has other ideas or knowledge please do contribute.

Note: I have been updating this description as other members identify places.

- In the scene where the Durrells are walking up a road having just arrived in Corfu, Mrs Durrell says "look I can see the village up ahead look" - The village they are looking at in the distance is Pelekas. The village they are just coming out of at the time is Varypatades just south east of Pelaekas (thank you Annie McGiggles Hawkins and Theresa Taberner (who lives there) for identifying). See photos now in comments below.

- After they leave Varypatades behind on the way to the guest house that the Durrells had booked into, they drive through a village. As they approach the guest house on the main street a man comes out on to the steps to great them. Spiros says “we don’t stay here, too expensive, lots of empty houses on the island" and they drive on by. That village is also Varypatades and the guest house is actually a church (see photos now in comments below). Thank you again to Theresa Taberna for identifying.

- Rock formations at Cape Drastis Perouloudes (Sidari) - (Mrs Durrell at cliff tops and sat against tree after asking her family why they are so vile). Thanks Jason Fisher for confirming location).

- The house used as the Durrells home is at Kontokali (confirmed by Mikey Rav who has been there many times)

- Shrine of St Arsenius (where Margo sunbathes on the rocks and is shouted at by the monk) is a short walk south from the White House at Kalami (where Larry really lived with his first wife Nancy). The Shrine was where Larry (in real life) and Nancy loved to swim (nice connection there).

Note: Boy those were powerful binoculars that Larry was using out of his bedroom window (in Kontokali), to be able to see Margo sunbathing so clearly all the way up the coast near Kalami)! LOL! „smile“-Emoticon

- The flamingos were at 2 places, Alikes Salt Flats (the flying shots) and Lake Korisson the bit where Theo and Gerry are pretending to be Flamingoes in the water (confirmed by Jason Fisher who discussed it with someone who took the film crew there to get the shots).

- According to Thomson.co. uk the stars of the show stayed at The Corfu Imperial Luxury Resort on the private peninsula in Kommeno Bay near Gouvia.

- The actual home the Durrells were living in when they left England was in in Wimborne Road, Bournemouth (near the town centre). However the house used for this TV series is located in Hurst Way, Croydon.
Just a foot note in case anyone is interested: When Mrs Durrell first came to the Bournemouth area from London in 1931, the first house she bought was Berridge House (a rambling victorian house) at 6 Spur Hill, Poole (a short distance from where I live now). Mrs Durrell had to sell the house for financial reasons and moved into a smaller house, Wimborne Road, Bournemouth. It was there that the decision to move to Corfu was made. When war broke out in 1939 Mrs Durrell came back to England and bought another home in Bournemouth. There is a very big Durrell connection in the Bournemouth area (as well as Corfu).

When they were recording the series last year they put arrow signs on power/telephone poles at major road junctions presumably for the benefit of the crew/transport for the actors etc. They spent a lot of time at 'The Village' at Danillia which would cut down on snooping opportunities as it is private.

I assume the reason that they are starting earlier this year is that the weather wasn't that great last Autumn.

Posted By: Elliemay
Date Posted: 15 Jun 2016 at 2:59am
To be honest the weather was pretty good last Autumn, a few showers unlike the deluges of the last two days here. I believe they use the old village locations to try to keep in concept that it was filmed in the 30's and there are not many places now that would fit to that time era.

To be honest you seemingly have a short memory as the weather was very patchy last Autumn and a rainy day is very expensive to a film production team to be honest.

I was there in the first week of September. The house was set up for filming - from the beach below I could see a large light reflector in the garden. I presume they deliberately hang tatty shutters around the house too. The ropey aviaries had been rebuilt and even Alecko's sign was back hanging in the tree! I may be imagining things but the pink bike might have been there too... I shall have to check my photos. No cast I could see, but a crew member did turn up and lurk around a bit to make a presence felt while I was taking pictures from below, so presumably there's at least a few cameras on the place even when they're not filming!

Thanks Joefish, that's interesting. Where exactly is the house?

Posted By: joefish
Date Posted: 18 Nov 2016 at 2:15pm
Ah, now that'd be telling! Not sure if I shouldn't make you work it out, like I did..? LOL

It's not far away from their real first house, but it's on the waterfront in the Kontokali area (pronounced kon-dochelly, as if it was Irish, I think!). If you re-watch the show you can see the two islands of Lazareto and Vidos from their veranda, not quite overlapping. So if you draw an almost exactly east-west line that just skims both islands, you can see where it meets the shore...
http://www.google.co.uk/maps/%28at%2939.6469957,19.8606174,201m/data=!3m1!1e3" rel="nofollow -
http://tinyurl.com/hcw85wh" rel="nofollow - http://tinyurl.com/hcw85wh

Be aware that the sea comes right up to the wall half-way along, so you will have to wade through six inches of water to get from the little beach at one end to the jetty at the other end. And it is a private house, so respect the privacy of the owners. But at least the shore is public land in Greece so you're free to walk around from the edge of the bay.

Though you'll also see some odd things that give away the editor's cunning. There are two sets of steps embedded in the wall that lead down to the beach at the south end, neither of which are directly in front of the house. But through editing there only appears to be one. For aesthetic reasons they seem to prefer to show young Gerald descending the steps by the kink in the wall, but coming out at the bottom of the other steps where there's more beach! And Mrs Durrell talking to the convict when he's at the top of the steps and she's in the doorway. In reality he'd be somewhere off to her right. So not only are they not having the conversation face-to-face, they may well not even have been both present at the same time...

And all the activity takes place at the back door; the front of the house is never shown. Though you won't see this either. It's obviously not visible from the shore, and it's on such a large piece of land you can barely make out the house from the road on the other side.

They were actually filming in our village Kavadades. Were supposed to set up on the defunct football pitch below our house, however due to a two day deluge that was not possible, so they set up in the grounds of the olive oil press instead. Know where they filmed as can see the really old house from ours. Can't wait to see what they actually filmed though.
Won't say anything about them trying to block off the road by the PO and being told rather bluntly by the Greeks to move it. Lol

Like you Elliemay, can't wait to watch the new series, if only to see the locations. Thanks Joefish for the details, it goes without saying the privacy issue is important. We had fun, a few years ago now, tracking the location of the houses Gerald Durrell wrote about.

The location where you get a view down the coast from Cape Drastis to the steps at Peroulades is pretty dodgy actually - by which I mean fairly dangerous to get near, never mind for a film crew to be lumping kit around. It's where Mrs Durrell wanders off to read a book and throw nuts at some field mice - for some reason.

The track that leads down to Cape Drastis has the very best views from the top. As you descend, your view is mostly blocked by trees and reeds. You can either step out onto the cape (but you're limited in how far you can go now) or follow the track all the way down to a very narrow inlet where you can get a boat tour. (The rock shelves out just under the water in this inlet too, so it's fine for getting in and out for a swim).

But as you make your way back onto the tarmac road from the track and away from the cape, on the shore side of the road is a high bank, fenced off, with some olive trees. The scene was shot up there, looking along the coast away from the cape. But be warned, that bank doesn't slope off on the far side - at the top of the bank you can see from the road, there's a sheer drop of hundreds of meters, and the face of it is being eroded all the time. From the sea you can see fresh falls from the cliff tops that occur several times a year!

There are a few other tracks around Corfu which are scarily close to massive drops. If you take the service path from opposite The Orchard in Sidari, up the slope and along the coast to Cape Drastis, you go past the radio towers and you'll see 4WD tracks along the trail. There's a line of shrubs right beside the road, and they're hiding another shear drop.

Just found this. It's a BBC documentary from 1976 called 'Spirit of Place'. Here they've taken Lawrence Durrell back to the island. Charming to watch, and he visits the shrine of St Arsenius where he swam with Nancy, and Margo goes to sunbathe in the new series (although since she is subsequently spied on from the house, I presume it's supposed to be just further along the peninsula).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIOjaroRfEI" rel="nofollow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIOjaroRfEI

Having watched some of the series again (recorded on my digibox), they do show more views of the house - you occasionally get to see the front and sides. Maybe they were standing in the right place above the steps after all. They clearly had a bit of fun with a drone camera too as there are more than a few sweeping ærial shots, carefully framed to avoid the road!

Actually, as to the location of the house, there is a massive clue in the ad break animations. In the one of Leslie riding past on the pink bike, if you assume that's the main road out of Corfu town and you're looking out to the island of Lazareto, then that would be Kontokali on the left and you can see the house drawn right there (although in reality it's mostly obscured from the road).

As for the scenes that use the Danilia Village museum, am I right in thinking that the Police Station is the same building by the square that was St. Cyrils church in For Your Eyes Only? From what I've seen on-line it appears to now be owned by Grecotel, who run the Corfu Imperial, Eva Palace and Daphnila Bay hotels. I guess it's been tidied up for the filming and so they can now arrange tours or events or hold wedding receptions there.

Just remember to keep an eye on the background extras in the next series, to see if you recognise anyone, as they apparently hired a load of locals...

I knew of the 80s series but don't remember seeing any of it. But I did just find a DVD of it. Somehow I'd got the impression that it wasn't shot on Corfu, but it was.

And Wow! That has to be the most horrendous child acting I've ever seen in my life! Confused
It looks like the director has tried hard to only give him lines when he's got a petulant reply or annoyed about something, but sooner or later you can't escape noticing that he barks out every line like a 6-year-old in his first nativity play!

Hannah Gordon is particularly good, and Brian Blessed just about manages to reign in his usual exuberance to about 'Greek normal'. Although the actors playing Larry and Leslie look like they're in their 40s. The whistled theme gets a bit annoying when it's repeated throughout the programme too; it's not very Greek. There's some humour in some of the absurd situations but it's all very calm and relaxed. I can see why there's been a lot of invention in The Durrells to add a bit of drama, or else it would have vanished without trace in today's TV schedules. I can imagine there was a lot of "Isn't the scenery delightful, Nan, I SAID, ISN'T THE SCENERY DELIGHTFUL?" going on in living rooms at the time. LOL

If you really want an unintentional laugh, watch it with subtitles. Because when someone says 'Kalimera' it just comes up with "[Speaks Greek]"!

The writer of The Durrells, Simon Nye, also did a one-off 90 minute version of My Family and Other Animals for the BBC in 2005. Imelda Staunton does a good turn as Mother, but again, Gerry is oddly cast. Larry refers to him jokingly as Mowgli at one point, but towards the end he genuinely starts to look it! Omid Djalili is Spiro this time and comes across OK, though when amongst the actual Greek extras he's clearly out of place.

Chris Langham is absolutely terrible as Theodore Stephanides; his accent jarringly fading in and out like Whitney Houston trying to hold a note.

You can see the annoying version of Larry coming along, that works so well in The Durrells, and Russell Tovey does a reliable Leslie. Though again, you can see he's been given a bit of vulnerability to make The Durrells more interesting, and share the drama around the family. Margot doesn't say much, but her annoying Turkish boyfriend is quite well done. She's clearly been completely re-invented as a charming but ditzy character for the new adaptation. Overall it's pretty good, but a bit rushed. They do go through the three houses; of particular note is that they use the one used in The Durrells (hurriedly daubed a different colour). The historical village is used for scenes too.

I guess one problem with adapting the trilogy of books too closely is, once you've done the first one, they've been to Corfu, gone through three houses, and left again. You're then a bit stuck as to where to start a second series. At least the way it's been re-invented for The Durrells it can run a bit longer. I think I'd actually be a bit disappointed if they did leave that house now!

Might just be a guess - the first series started on 3rd April 2016. Makes sense though.

Ah, presumably not before 8th April 2017 though because:

http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2017-03-24/join-keeley-hawes-at-the-radio-times-festival-for-a-premiere-screening-of-the-durrells-series-two" rel="nofollow - http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2017-03-24/join-keeley-hawes-at-the-radio-times-festival-for-a-premiere-screening-of-the-durrells-series-two

"The first episode of the upcoming second series will be screened at the Radio Times Festival on Saturday 8th April, giving fans a sneak peek of what's happening on the island."

Since ITV's own press page lists a few programmes already for that weekend and up to the following Friday, perhaps it could start Easter Sunday (16th), or (if there's special programming then) St George's Day, Sunday 23rd April - assuming they go with the Sunday evening slot. It certainly worked well enough last time.

My guess wold be Easter Sunday, 16th April at 8pm.

They're currently showing detective drama Vera in that slot and it's due to finish the weekend before. You can typically view complete TV schedules up to a week ahead, and press information for about two weeks. So far we haven't seen any advertising for what's going to be on over Easter so they may be keeping back any announcements. Given it hit them as a bit of a surprise success last year they're probably going to make a big fuss over it second time around.

Though they did successfully milk the press coverage over the Sven storyline last time; I wonder if anything like that is already built-in to their promotional plans this year?

Just found this too, an even older BBC film called 'The Garden of the Gods' with Gerald Durrell returning to Corfu in 1967. And some conversations with Theodore Stephanides.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1gCBfADKmE" rel="nofollow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1gCBfADKmE

What strikes me particularly is Theodore's voice - no hint of an obvious Greek accent but a peculiar way of saying 'Cor-few' that the actor in the 80s series seems to have been impersonating quite well.

Yep, Simon Nye kind of blurted it out on Saturday after the preview!

Haha, I've seen the new episode! It's great. Can't wait to see it again on my own telly!

Little Spoiler! Little Spoiler! - it has a new animated intro, and if you look really closely you might just spot... Well... Now that would be spoiling it, wouldn't it? Wink

Suffice to say, as well as the trailer that's around at the moment, you might like to record the first episode on your digibox (if you can) so you can watch the intro again...

And if you've really got the time, see if you can record the trailer so you can watch it again after you've seen the first episode; much of it does come from that one, but not necessarily all of it... Geek

Funny in the discussion that followed the showing of the epsiode, it seemed a lot of people in the audience assumed that they used the interior of the house for filming, as well as the exterior, when it's (nearly) all done on replica sets back in the UK. Or maybe I just watch too many of those 'DVD Extras' afte I've seen a film! They explained they certainly wouldn't have space in the kitchen to fit a film crew as well as whatever scene is taking place, as it's just not big enough.

What was amusing was Keeley Hawes' description of filming, because as well as all the cameras, lighting and directors looking their way, the actor is faced with trying to entirely ignore multiple animal handlers waving and dangling various chew-toys on bits of string to try and get the (trained) animals to look in the right direction!

We actually saw them filming in our village in Kavadades as there is a really old villa there where they filmed. They were originally going to set up camp on the village football pitch last year but as the weather was so bad and it was waterlogged they decided to set up camp in the olive press grounds nearby. Can't wait to see the second series as we will recognise so many places.

Is that one of the ones used as one of the family's villas in the 2005 version?
There was a scene around the terrace of another villa that looked familiar, with several brick arches around the gardens.

I should skip through the earlier adaptations again to see if they used the same places. The villa they use now was (I think) supposed to be the second one, the Daffodil-Yellow Villa (which is in reality close by) in the 2005 version, where it was either badly painted or badly recoloured on computer. In The Durrells I think it's sort-of supposed to be the first one, the Strawberry-Pink villa (Villa Agazini), as that's what it says on Margo's postcard from Max. Though that's not allowing for all the changes from the books - for example Lugaretzia was the wife of the groundskeeper at the yellow villa, who they only met after they'd moved once. This is all getting a bit nerdy... LOL

Don't know, doubt it very much as to my knowledge they have never filmed in The NW before. We will find out when it is aired later this month. We can actually see this villa from our house and the gates to it are just adjacent to the Post Office in Kavadades.

It seems they've copied the press release from ITV word-for-word but without including the preview clip!

http://www.itv.com/news/channel/update/2017-04-11/the-durrells-confirmed-to-return-at-the-end-of-the-month/" rel="nofollow - http://www.itv.com/news/channel/update/2017-04-11/the-durrells-confirmed-to-return-at-the-end-of-the-month/

Interesting that it says:

"Tune into ITV Channel next week to see an exclusive look behind-the-scenes in Corfu, where the series is filmed".

But particularly annoying that it doesn't give a date or time for that. But if it's 'next week', is that showing up in any TV guide or on-line schedule?

[Ah - it's a bit odd, but 'ITV Channel' may be a reference to the former 'Channel TV', a TV station specifically for the Channel Islands.]

[Sorry - Dumbo here has just realised why all this news seems to come from the Channel Islands - it's because the Jersey Zoo are always first to re-post anything to do with the Durrells.]

Now the last episode of The Durrells has finished, I wondered what everyone thought? Some of the locations were really special, especially those in last nights episode! Looking forward to visiting some of them this year.

They do seem to like going back to that precarious cliff edge in Cape Drastis; that closing drone shot showed just how close they all were to one hell of a drop!

I did notice the 'Snow White-Villa' (from one of Lesley's photographs) makes an appearance in the new animated intro, just before it cuts away from the cricket pitch, but it didn't feature in the series. I wondered if it was a clue that they'd be moving house, but they're still in the same place.

I'm not sure if the house they're in is meant to be the first villa Gerald wrote about or even if the writers will have them move at all. It's similar - and close - to the second one (the 'Daffodil-Yellow Villa), although not as big.

It does bug me all the people photographing it and claiming it to be one of the real villas rented by the family. Although not as much as the owners of 'The White House' claiming the family lived there when they didn't. It was Lawrence & Nancy's marital hideaway, not Gerald's 'Snow-White Villa'.

Though no doubt anyone in the middle of nowhere who thinks they can take some money off you now has a story of how 'The Durrells stayed here'...

I agree with all you have said Joefish. Although the house the Durrells are shown as living in is "to die for", and the front-line location is perfect, none of the villas the Durrells actually lived in were that close to the sea. Yes, I agree it is similar (but smaller) than the "Daffodil-Yellow" villa. Makes for good filming though!
Must have missed seeing the photo of the "Snow-White" villa in the intro. Do you know if the lady who was caring for stray and injured animals still lives there? She told us Gerald had visited her once on one of his return trips to Corfu!
Now I am getting 'nerdy'!

Thanks for your help Joefish .... we found the old mansion used in the filming of The Durrells. Beautiful old building with some magnificent trees. Saw the cages used to house Gerald's animals and could hear the goat bleating from somewhere in the grounds.

Sorry, I wasn't buying it. It just didn't seem to suit their characters. I thought it was a step too far of 'modernising' the drama.
