Hello all,

Sorry for the general nature of this question, but I shall be returning to Kassiopi on 12th June for a week with my family - our first return there since 2008! Yes, having very young children certainly curtailed our Kassiopi holidays.

However, I know a good deal will have changed in that time, so I would really appreciate it if anyone could update me on any major changes.

I know that Taverna Strofilia changed hands, but have not yet heard back from Gaynor on Facebook as to how that came about. Could the new Strofilia be as good?!?

Also, I saw on the Internet that Spiros up at the Taverna Imerolia has transformed part of it into a villa. Could anyone tell me if the taverna is still going? I really hope so as that was always one of my favourite spots in Kassiopi.

In addition, is the Charcoal Grill still going? They used to do one of the best steaks in Kassiopi!

Any updates you could all provide me will be gratefully received.

Thanks in advance,

Gonzo

Hello
I can answer a couple of the questions for you.
Yes the charcoal grill is still going I will be there for my lamb chops in June.
I have not been to the new Stroffilia but from what I know it was not that busy last year but I could be wrong on that.
The taverna at Imerolia is also still there so at least you know of a couple of places that you can still go to.
I don't know if you ever went to Petrinos but that has now moved to the harbour and there is also a new restaurant down the harbour but I have not been but has good reviews.
Nothing has really changed and Kassiopi is still the beautiful village everyone loves.

The Mexican and Chinese restaurants have both gone.
Imerolia taverna has not changed but the apartments that were next door were changed into a villa.
Kassiopi Star has been closed since 2010.
Sconto has closed and been reopened as a Diellas supermarket and there is another supermarket in what used to be the community centre opposite Little Italy.
Kiros supermarket in the harbour has been split off into 2 supermarkets and one also has a bar now.
3 Brothers has a new name. Its now the Old Schoolhouse but still run by the same wonderful family.
The supermarket near to Dons Bar has closed.
The tourist train is no more.
Quite a few new places have also opened recently as well and the place still has exactly the same feel as when we first went in 2007.

The person who has taken over at Strofillia is the owner of the place, who  is the uncle of Tassos & Harris. We had a meal in there last summer & it was very good. Totally different menu though & not as much variety. We will go back this summer. One other thing is that Pertino's moved into the harbour four years ago. And my God, don't you get a view.

The Eucalyptus bar as changed its name to Virginias Place and has had a refurb over the winter. The Albatross bar closed and has now reopened with Valvara at the helm. The Dive place has relocated near to the square. We have another Gyros place and a ice cream parlour opposite and to the right of Illusions.

Welcome back Andy (Gonzo) long time no see. I think the last time was about 2004 when you were footlose and fancy free Wink. I have got some good photos of you in Kostas bar with Gwen & Dave and Dave & Mary Faulkner. As others have said there have been quite a few changes in Kassiopi but most of the old places are still there. You will find Christos, the boatman, in the Kafenion most evenings. The old Kassimis aptartments on the Harbour has gone upmarket and is now called the Melina Bay Hotel, very plush. Petrinos, who used to be opposite the Charcoal Grill has relocated to the Harbour as Big Al says.

Spiro at Imerolia is still going strong and specialises in fish nowadays and it has been renamed Imerolia Fish Taverna. He still has the apartments upstairs but no villa. There is a villa  across the little lane leading to the beach which belongs to his cousin.

Illusions, Jasmine, Mak Mak, Bolero, Istoni, Dons are still there along with Lime Lounge the old Classico. Barons, the bar on the corner facing Jasmine is now a shop and next door which used to be the Eclipse is now One for the Road owned by Geordie Micky.

We shall be there at end of August so will miss you, this will be our 36th. year on the trot. We stayed in Imerolia for 30 years but stay in the village nowadays as the walk is too much for us now. The last time I saw you we took a walk from Imerolia around the headland having a drink in every bar up to the square, wish I could do it now but the old arthritis has caught up with me.LOLCry.

Have a great holiday Andy, hope the family enjoy it...All the best...Alec.

Hi Alec,

It is great to hear from you! I certainly do remember our walk around the headland, what a smashing day that was! As a result, I had to go and have a bit of a lie down when I got back to my apartment. You well & truly broke me!

I really feel like I have missed out on a considerable amount of Kassiopi history these last five years, but I have had much to occupy me. I was married in 2009, and our eldest daughter appeared the following year. Her baby sister appeared two years later. The girls are now old enough for us to consider a foreign holiday. In addition, I now live 16 miles from Aberdeen Airport who now do Friday morning flights to Corfu - it couldn't be better!

I promised we would come back to Kassiopi as soon as I retired from the military, which I did in January. So much has happened this past five years. I had an email off Kay a few weeks ago saying that Kosta's hip operation went well. There was me thinking the guy was invincible!

Thank you very much for your updates. I'm so glad that Spiro's is still going at Imerolia. To me, that is possibly the finest restaurant in Kassiopi, with the most hospitable host. I can't wait to see him and his family, Kostas, Kay, Akis and everyone in resort. We're going to have a lot of catching up to do!

But please excuse me for a short while, as I must go and thank these other fine people for their updates.

Speak to you soon,

Andy

Karen, Bob & Rosie, Big Alan, Davvyboy and Bob & Wendy,

Thank you so much for your updates, I really do appreciate all your help. We are so looking forward to going back 'home', even if it is just for a week this time. It does appear that a lot has changed in Kassiopi while I've been away. Still, as we've seen for over 20 years, you can change the buildings, but that can never change the finest village in Greece.

Speak again soon,

Gonzo

There is also another really nice restaurant called To Kyma or Kyma, the jury is out on that one. Lol
It is on the harbour just past the Wave Bar on the left going up the hill. Well it wouldn't be on the right as you would be in the sea. LOL

Wow learning lots of new things about the old Kass. Can't believe that Petrino's hasn't always been on the harbour and that there was a supermarket near Don's, this was where the choir practised last year and I think they used it for yoga. When did the pool opposite this close down? Other half and I joked about opening our own snack bar here.

The yoga/martial arts place is next door to the old supermarket and still open.
I have been going since 2007 and have never seen the pool behind the Italian open.

As far as I can gather, the fire was not in the hotel itself but in the generator behind the hotel. Luckily no one was hurt. How the fire engines got down the street I don't know! A tour bus found it almost impossible because of the parked cars, so I am amazed that the fire engines managed!

Gonzo asked about changes in Kassiopi and even since our last visit 3 years ago there have been some. Out of the blue is now a supermarket, the newspaper shop is a clothing 'boutique' and there are several other new ones around the village.

Everything appears to be moving more upmarket and prices in a lot of places have gone up, which was not unexpected given the additional taxes under the Greek 'austerity' measures.

Driving through Roda/Sidari today though pricing generally appeared lower than in Kassiopi

However Don's new venture 'Taverna Levanda' sells some very good food and is very popular to answer my own question a few posts ago.

As for the old 'Mexican' restaurant which went to English before closing, it's currently being redeveloped as an extension to 'Ena' supermarket next door.

BTW Andy, the evidence of your return on that headland walk with Aleco is still up on the wall in Kosta's Smile

Micky has been seen most nights in One For The Road and was talking about going back to the UK for the winter, personally I won't be going back in that particular bar for reasons I'm not allowed to post on here.

Think I should clarify for newer readers that 'Ena' is now called Kassiopi Central Supermarket.

By the way when did the 'Euro' shop become a Doctors surgery and the building opposite the new hardware store?

Oh and when I said that prices have gone up, they are offset by the Euro/£ exchange rate which is far better than it was 3 years ago (in our favour)

How about an update on how the holiday went and the changes you found Andy?

Posted By: Gonzo1992

Hi Dave,

Wow! There were so many changes I was quite taken aback. One of the biggest shocks was walking into the supermarket next to the Old School and not being able to emerge at the far end overlooking Uncle Simos' restaurant. The owner explained that it was the family developing and the different parts wanting to do different things with the property.

I couldn't also believe that all the old wooden kiosks had gone! The main street up to the baker's was also an eye-opener. The jeweller's, Chinese and Mexican all gone. The former two have been there since 1992! I don't mind saying that looking at some of those empty buildings and remembering the resort in its heyday brought a bit of a lump to my throat. The locals have certainly had it hard and are not holding out much optimism for the future.

Some things never change though (thank goodness), such as Illusions, Kostas and the Solaris. All of those were still jumping and as fun as ever. Taverna Imerolia had to be our favourite, with other diamonds being the Charcoal Grill, No 7 and the Old School. The food was even better than the last time (or was it just me being so happy to be back?)!

I'm afraid we didn't get to the beaches as my girls were more than happy round the pool and only have little legs - just like their dad! The best part is that they absolutely loved it and my eldest wants to return next year for "14 sleeps"!

Everyone was a bit older and a bit greyer, but still as friendly as ever. It's my second home and I can't wait to get back there next year!

Yes even Nicos is looking more like his dad Kosta was when younger every time we go, just a bit taller though Wink

Chinese closed some years back and the guy who ran it (can't remember his name now) was still running a taverna up in Old Perithia

The jeweller is still around, we saw him in June when we were there Andy.

We did miss Christos boat trips on the Dolphin and he hasn't changed at all, still a great bundle of fun when we were chatting to him.

You'll have to make the most of out of school term holidays whilst you can Andy and get Kassiopi well embedded in the families blood stream Thumbs Up

Thank you all for the updates.
I am happy to say I will see them for myself in about 5 weeks and cannot wait, counting down. We have been back from Tunisia a couple of months and already are looking to next year. For decorating home reasons we will probably only get away once next year. Hubby wants to know where I fancy going!!!
After all these years he still want to know...goes without saying  Big smile

Has Don still kept Don's Bar open after his new restaurant has opened? We always go there our first night in Kassiopi.
