Hi Elliemay,
Lafki village 25th and 26th of July.
Unless someone dies unexpectedly, of it rains cats and dogs and is cancelled as has happened in the past.
The 26th being the main one, in the past the 25th was introduced as a Cantenades night (singers with trditional songs with verses about local people added) a right laugh if you knew the person refered to at the time, but now a traditional panigery. However, you never know who will turn up and do a set later in the evening.

I thought the sardine festival in Benitses took place in July. We have been there on 8th September for 36 of our 37 years visiting and never seen it.  Perhaps there is a change for next year, I hope so.

Hi Alison,
This link says that it takes place on the closest Saturday to August 11th if that is of any help.

http://www.greeka.com/ionian/corfu/corfu-festivals/corfu-varkarola.htm

Totally confused now as it was August 5th 2012, which was a Sunday methinks.

Lymmbo  the July festival in Benitses is Agia Marina- 17th July, but also celebrated on the 16th.

The sardine festival did not happen last year due to a shortage of sardines, not sure if it will go ahead this year!

Hi Alison,
It's really confusing isn't it. Only in Greece. Lol.
If you're going for 2 weeks all I can suggest is spanning either side of the 11th unless you can get local information from someone in Corfu, but then it can change due to the weather or some other unforeseen happening.

Slightly off topic.
I've just picked up this info, there is a planned Seminar of Greek folk dances, to be  located in Lefkimi, from 28th July to 4 August, three professional teachers, one Cretan one Pontic, the third would probably mixed maybe Ionian, with another suprise teacher rumoured. If my rusty French has got it right, demi pension means half board, there will be 4 hours of instruction each day, 580e per participant.

I think the Vakarola in Kalami is on the same date as Paleo. It's on the second Saturday in August (I think). It was on this day two years and also three years ago.  The big problem is that these celebrations can all be cancelled if anyone dies and as many accidents in cars or scooters seem to happen in the summer months they seem to get cancelled often.

2nd of July is the Panigiri of Vlacherena. It's the famous small church in Kanoni area.
In the initial post it says Garitsa, the correct location is Kanoni, just where you take the boat to Mouse Island.
You can have coffee in Kanoni, enjoy the landing and take offs and then have some fan by the beach.

Funny that.
Perhaps they mean the first folk festival organised by Kassiopi.
I remember there used to be an annual International Folk Dance festival at Kassiopi harbour every year until they altered the road layout.
The last time I saw it was when there was the famouse Dance troup from Nausa, who performed the dance where the men drop straight down onto their knees and straight back up onto their heels with a stamp, wearing white masks molded to their faces with little painted mousetaches on them, and their costume included chain mail made up of ancient coins linked together across their chests, I've still got some that dropped off somewhere.
The Sinies International Folk Dance Festival now concentrates on Sinies and Corfu Town. This year was the 16th.
Regardless, it will be a great spectacle, with loads of enthusiasm. I wish we were there to see it.
Bob.

From the Green Corfu Blog

We are near the first weekend of August and like every year, in Arillas we have the yearly Antamoma festival. Antamoma in Greek means "get together" or "reunion", and it is the chance for Arilliots from around the world to meet, talk, eat and dance together.

This festival is also a meeting on another level, as every year dancing groups from other parts of Greece and even abroad come to Arillas to dance.  This year we even have two dancing groups, one from Kavala and one from Portaria on Mount Pilion. Of course, the local dancing club of Arillas will also perform.

Souvlakia, dumplings, Corfu Beer and lots of dancing this Saturday AND Sunday in Arillas, at the olive grove 300 meters from the beach. Come and get together with us!!!

Hi,
The 28th of October is Ochi Day so there will be processions throughout the island.

"On the 28th of October, 1940, Italy, backed by Hitler, wanted to occupy Greece; General Ioannis Metaxas simply responded "Ochi!" - "No!" It was an answer that brought Greece into the war and at that time, Greece was Britain's only ally against Hitler!"

Bruce, we may be forced to turn up, just to make sure it comes up to expected standards.
We missed out on the Kavadades festival as we had just returned from the mainland and were too knackered to go.
Unfortunately, the downside for us is that the parking in Kass. is such a nightmare it puts us off going.

There is a big car park in Kassiopi and its never more than half full.
Shame as it only costs about 3 euros for 24 hours.
The entrance gate shuts about 9.30pm but the exit is automatic so you can leave at any time.

Sorry its too far for us oldys to then walk all the way down to the harbour, no wonder its always more or less empty, its too far from everything, as it happens our accountant's office is directly opposite the car park you mention, but we just park in the street.
Bob.

I know a few people in the same boat!
Perhaps someone should open a mobility scooter hire shop here.

My son, his wife and I are arriving in Kassiopi on Monday, too late for the wine festival
I have managed to hire a mobility scooter, from Mels mobility hire in Sidari, so hopefully I will be mobile. If you see a little old lady whizzing around next week, say Hi.

I have heard that there is a dancing display of some sort on next Sunday, at Sinies.
I imagine it will be in the community hall opposite Giani's Supermarket, or out on the green.
7pm start.
I don't know any other details unfortunately.

Not an oracle, but if you look at the first post on this topic many of the festivals are held on the same day each year. That is unless the weather turns or there is a death in the village and then it will be postponed. Best to ask locally when you are there. I will try to keep this topic updated of festivals that I read/hear about, but as I said, it could be a moveable feast. x

Ah, so that's what it was, with the mechanised barbecue trailer. That was an insane bit of engineering.
