Reading through one of the travel companies' latest Paxos blogs, I came across their tips for the things they consider to be must-dos when visiting Paxos.  I'm not doing very well, because after 20 years of holidaying on Paxos, there are still at least two that I've not done Shocked  Their list is something like this:-

1  Stroll through the olive groves (yes, done may times!)
2  Watch the sunset from one of the east coast sunset bars (no, never done that)
3  Walk to Tripitos Arch (yes, did this in our early Paxos days, but didn't have the nerve to actually walk across it Dead )
4  Lunch at Monodendri beach (no, but I've had many a lunch at the beachside tavernas on Levrechio and Mongonissi, so does that count instead?)
5  Coffee and people-watching in Gaios Square (yes, many times)
6  Hire a boat and go over to Anti Paxos for lunch (kind of - done both separately, but never gone to Anti Paxos in a hire boat)

So, what does everyone else think of this list and what would you add to it?  Some things I'd add would be:-

1  Ride the bus along Loggos harbour
2  Walk up to Loggos Mill and Lakka Point for the best views of the two villages
3  Most important of all - do nothing!  Just relax and let Paxositis take over Wink
I wasn't lost - I was just taking an interesting detour!

OK
Yes to 1,2,4,5
I always mean to do 3 but chicken out as can't do heights and I am getting worse with age!
I would never take my own boat across to Anti Paxos, too many years spent in the 70s with the old wooden boats and tiny engines. In those days you just were not allowed across there or round the West side in them. Even now some are not insured for it, and depends on the weather anyway. I would rather go on the taxi boats from Gaios, or round island trips, they are used to the seas around Paxos.

New ones, which seem to include the Paxositis bit.
4  work out who is on the big expensive boats in the harbour, or even further out! As the wine goes down the theories get worse.
5  People watch at the harbourside when the occupants of boats disembark from their little dinghys, or better still when they try to get back in after a good meal and a few drinks! Wicked really as it must be awful with an audience.

Elaine, every time we go to Paxos I want to go to the sunset bar at Emritos, and every year we somehow never do! Call it inertia by evening time, or the lure of the Roxy Bar, but it has become a bit of a joke now and I somehow think we'll never make it now. I did like Monondendri in the early days of Ben's Bar, but sounds bit busy now with the new taverna and pool.

One for us to try this year is The Bella Vista taverna on Anti P. Have not tried the 214 steps before as were unsure about mooring up and if it was going to be open in early June as some locals were uncertain, but they could call their cousain!
We moor up at Vrika beach on the left side to go to the Tavernas but looks like you go in as far as you can, lift outboard then wade ashore on Voutoumi which looks the best way to Bella Vista?

Have not visited the Olive Press Museum near Magazia yet.

Bella Vista is well worth the climb Malcy - it definitely does what it says on the tin Big smile  I think you're right about the wading in, all the boats seem to moor offshore at Voutoumi - in fact I seem to recall that there's a line of buoys strung across the bay to indicate no boats beyond a certain point.
I wasn't lost - I was just taking an interesting detour!

That is a lovely photo Elaine. So clear to the Mongonisi Island and even beyond in the distance to a hint of the mainland?
Sea conditiones permitting will try to get to the Taverna this year. Might take me a while to climb up those steps though!

 : Paxos June 2010 090
I hope I've added this photo right. I think you might need a magnifing glass to see it!! Confused
This is a must for a cold glass of beer. You have to call in to this little kafenion in Magazia. Walk through the door and you truly have stepped back in time! I won't show you the photos of the inside and spoil the suprise but if you want to see them they are in my gallery.

It was on your recommendation Elaine and seeing this lovely photo that we went to Bella Vista. Well worth all those steps to see that view! Voutoumi is the beach I like the best on Anti Paxos less people and so so beautiful from Bella Vista!

Malcy on reaching the top  wipe your brow with your 'hat' and then take the stroll across the top passing through a little hamlet and grape vines. Its mainly all down hill and takes you back down to the beach with more stunning views.  Smile

Its a good idea to be sure that the Bella Vista is open before you climb all those steps.  We have gone up with a struggle to find the gate locked.  We stopped on Anti Paxos for many years at the end of May and it was never open, which was a shame.  When the owner met us at the port to take us to Violetta house I would say "are you open yet?" he always said "June".  So although we were there for a whole week before going over to Loggos for the second week, we never experienced the view! So those of you that do find it open- enjoy!   Jenny

l'll ask in Loggos before climbing to the Bella Vista. Hopefully someone will know someone who knows if it's open.
Helen - Is that little Taverna the one on the right as you come into Magazia after you have passed the Fire Station and Lorry Park? It always looks too much of a locals Taverna. I haven't stopped there as I feel that I would be intruding! BUT - If I had the right hat! Any sugestions for this year?

We are staying at The Old Vinyard again this year. The owners opened their own Taverna last year and were very proud of it. it's well worth a visit just for the view over the Island to the Mainland. They were not fully open when we visited last year and it was a bit Fawlty Towers but I'm sure they have got it running now. It is on the 'main' road coming down from Fontana to Loggos near Zernatika.

One thing I'm still hoping to see again is Dolphins. We saw two on our first visit about 10 years ago as we were coming in towards Lakka on the Christina. Would love to see some again as we did off Skopelos. Cruised along for about 15 minutes close to a pod of about 6. Then noticed how far we were out to sea!!

A visit to that taverna is on my to do list this year, I've heard good reports and passed it last year. Can't remember the name, begins with P? The views are great.

Haven't seen dolphins recently, but they always seemed to follow the old ferry in the 70s, or is that just the romantic in me??

I will report on Helen's hat choice in September!!!Smile

Have been in this lovely little taverna and we were made very welcome by the owner and the locals. Felt quite at home there as we remember what some pubs were like in the 60's. Make it a place to have a drink and I am sure you will remember it.

Thats the one Malcy. The lorry park and the bus park is on the right and its there on the same side. Hat? Oh something dapper me thinks. Something like a Panama!!
Tina I'm thinking I should have a hat for every day of the week. All styles and colours...except the dreaded  Bill and Ben hat! Wink

You are absolutely right Elaine (as usual Tongue), the climb is well worth it for the view, the Taverna and all that goes with it!
Cant believe it took us 20 years to finally go there - and all because we took a couple of friends with us and they persuaded us. It was their first visit to Paxos and they did more in 2 weeks than we have probably done over all our visits.

I am definitely into Paxos chill; eating, drinking and people watching

Malcy
You do need to moor offshore and swim/wade in. There were no buoys there in June but it is expected (and frowned upon if you dont) - its common sense and much fairer to other beach and water users not to have to negotiate boats and running outboards. You can, if its clear, drop off and pick up your passengers on the small 'jetty' at the northerly side of the beach. At least that way, only you get a soaking  LOL

Only 33 days 22 hrs 58 mins until we arrive (unless the Igoumenitsa ferry changes times)
