Roll on the Paralympics, with real sportsmen and women.Well what did you mean by this Jan?? Surely all Athletes are real people?
They need sponsors to do what they do, why can you not concentrate on the games I ask myself? I agree about football, they are paid far to much for what they do, but I really don't get your point at all. Even you say you sponsored someone. K xxx

Hi,
I think that the problem would be that without sponsorship, there wouldn't be enough money to fund the games, or for that train the athletes. There are excellent sports persons in all countries that do not get the support that they need, including GB. Not everyone who excels gains the sponsorship to help them to continue with their dreams. From what I can see, it is all about sponsorship from the very beginning, how can mere mortals on average incomes ever find the necessary funds to aid their children without sponsorship?

I dont get why you cant concentrate on the games Jan? Im currently watching the swimming heats and cant see a McDonalds or Coke logo anywhere. Do you also think the paralympic games arent sponsored by these big companies? Just because they are athletes with a disability why does that make them more real than the able bodied?

All the athletes have worked so hard to get to the Olympics, lets just get behind them, no matter who sponsors them, they are all tremendous. Without sponsors there would be no chance for these truely dedicated athletes

In all walks of life there are people who have talents as good as, if not better than, those in the public eye, be it athletics, music or driving a racing car!! Some people get the lucky break, some don't! That's life! Not always fair I know but it's what happens.
The opening ceremony was a celebration of all things British because the Olympics are being held in Britain! I would have thought that was obvious to anyone and I, for one, thought it was brilliantly done. Everything ran smoothly, there were no hitches and it was a truly great spectacle to watch. So what if big businesses have put money into the Games? It's a huge amount of money for any country to find and if companies like MacDonalds can plough some money back into the event why not? After all, it's not going to make me rush out to eat one of their burgers! ![]() So people, please stop being so negative and get on with enjoying the spectacle. Sue

Welllll I thought the TV commentators could have enlarged on their commentary for my sake
The bloke with the whiskers and the top hat---I actually thought he was supposed to be George Washington---that was until I heard a voice mention the Industrial Revolution---then I knew he was playing the part of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, but, not a lot of details from the commentary box!
I did at one point ask Mr M---how on earth did the audience know who was who and what was what

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. Especially loved the Mr Bean and the James Bond bits!!!
The only thing that got and still gets up my nose (and I'm sure I'm going to cause controversy by saying this but I will anyway) is the non-English GB football players NOT singing the national anthem - apparently because it's not theirs. Well pardon me but I thought Queen Elizabeth II is their queen and they should be ashamed that they showed such disrespect for her especially in this her diamond jubilee year. The players in question should have thought about this long and hard before agreeing to play for Team GB, bearing in mind that many of them are likely never to play in international arenas such as the World Cup and the Euros. Shame on you!!!
If I dare to go on to say that I think all sportsmen and women regardless of their nationality should only be allowed to represent their country if they can prove they know the words of their national anthem and are prepared to sing it to show they are proud of their country!
I can hear the arguments for and against what I've said but you can bet your boots that if sports people are told from the outset that they won't be picked for their national team if they don't sing their national anthem, there will be a mad dash by many of them to google the words!!
Sorry but I feel a lot better for getting that off my chest!
Rita

I can understand different opinions that have been posted with regards to all the previous posts on the Olympics... but this lack of respect really gets up my nose too! |

Kathy 3- a bit different helping someone individually achieve their potential to big business sponsors who I suspect are only in it for the tax breaks and publicity!
Anyway, enough carping, I do understand many of your points of view and like everyone hope the qames are a success, but can I ask a question and please don't bite my head off? We all know that sport is important in life, for health reasons as well as pleasure. This is especially important in these days when the future looks bleak for so many kids (jobwise etc.) But the money required to train a few champions...might it not be better spent spread around and helping a lot- creating new hostels to enable more people to walk the Pennine Way or Hadrian's Wall for example? I hasten to add I do not want the dales littered with Sponsored by Macdonalds etc. signs! What will happen to these Olympians- a very few of them will make enough money, and get enough fame, to last a few years or maybe even a lifetime, but the majority will be yesterday's news in a week or two, have spent years training and neglecting getting an all round education and will now find themselves at the job centre, unless they want to teach PE! Surely the Olympics is now a test of stamina rather than sheer talent. I know the old days have long gone when there were amateurs and professionals and n'er the twain shall meet, but the lengths gone to now in pursuit of the medal (yesterday's Sunday Times talked of top secret special clothes to give an advantage etc.!) seem to have lost the purpose of it all, which should surely be to encourage everyone to do their best in whatever they do, and let everyone compete purely for the love of their sport, and pride for their country. Anyway, may the best men and women win, don't mind where they come from, but for me the smaller and less advantaged country the winner hails from the louder I'll be cheering!

Sorry off topic slightly but Im just watching the cross country equestrian events and the riders now have airbag type jackets that blow up around them if they become detatched from the saddle. Mustnt giggle but the poor chap looked like the Mitchellin man when he got to his feet! I used to ride my horse in these type of events but an airbag? Is this a good thing or health and safety gone mad. AND before anyone says anything about the UK these things are compulsory for all riders in all countrys in cross country events.

Every time some sports person or anyone for that matter does any good for this country, we have to bring them down or find some sort of scandal and that really gets up my nose too.
Citius, Altius, Fortius. Come on GB.

Im really enjoying the games and the AMAZING job that London are doing. Enjoyed the showjumping gold today and was on the edge of my seat. One annoyance though is the female runners seemed to have turned athletics into some sort of fashion show and not a running race. Ive seen glittered faces, multicoloured long nails, full make up, earings, rings, funny arm sleeve thingys...come on really is this sport or have they turned it into a fashion catwalk? Most of the competitors are sensible but one young lady from the USA I have just watched has definatley got all of the above. What do you people think? Am I being a old pooper? When I was at school you had to have your ears taped up if you even had earings on.

Sign of the times Jules. If I could run and perform like they do, I would gladly don my old school gym knickers, with my vest tucked in!!

Yes Ann I supose its a sign of the times but just looks ridiclous to be running in that sort of silly blingy stuff. My son who only usually watches tennis and F1 has been glued to the TV since it started and watching all sorts of diferent sports. He may regret sitting on his butt for two weeks as he is off on his second lot of army training very soon and will be getting woken up at 5am with a banging bin lid!!!
