After watching the opening of the Olympic games last night, it as again made me very proud to be British. My niece was one of the dancers and she said the experience and atmostphere was amazing. Danny Boyle is a genius, and it was good to see the forces and nurses reconised for their dedication and our music industry for the pleasure it as given us all over the years. Also to see all the people who have acheived great things in their life time, they are truly inspirational. Hope our Greek friends enjoyed it and think we have helped to keep the spirit of the games alive lol Ann xxx

OK. So, I am British, and most likely slightly biased, but I thought last night the opening ceremony was wonderful.
Just wondered what people from other parts of the world thought of it, and especially Greece, the home of the Olympics. Go on, I am brave, so am prepared to read all comments.

Saw bits on Greek television today and wondered what relevance it all had to the Olympics- a brilliant show but in the wrong setting- but maybe I am just a misery! The overpowering sponsorship deals etc has turned me totally off the whole thing, and today's moaning athlete saying he was cheated of a medal- presumably because he wasn't good enough to win one...no, roll on the Paralympics, with real sportsmen and women.
Move the whole thing to a permanent site at Olympia, ban ALL sponsors, and the spirit would return.

I totally agree Jan. Bring it back to where it all started and stop this squabbling and paying all these IOC people vast amounts of money to organise where it is going to be held every four years in venues that cannot afford it and will be in debt for years. Alec. |

Of course not, let every country put into it, the amount depending on size. The big countries could pay more to subsidise the smaller and poorer countries. |

Absolutely agree Alecco- an internationally funded area true to the values of the original Olympic spirit.
And if the kudos was great enough the financial incentive would not be so important |

Its because some people cant help putting oars in!!! I thought it was great and a real feast of British history through the ages, the torch lighting was amazing and the honour for those young athletes was brilliant. Im so glad some gold medalist from the past didnt get to light it after all the silly squabling that went on.

I still feel it was a wonderful tribute and thoroughly well thought out, but am also interested in hearing about other peoples thoughts about it, especially, those who are not British.
I feel that one advantage of having it in different countries is that it encourages the youth of the country to get involved in sports. Also it gives the competitors the chance to experience different and diverce cultures of the various countries which put on the games. I am sure the athletes who visited Bejing, experienced completely differing cultures, foods, people, buildings than in the previous 2 games in Athens and Sydney. |

I agree Lymbo, if you dont provide the facilities for the young athletes then they wont progress in sport. Holding the oylmpics in different countries each time provides the stadiums/venues for THAT country. Holding the games back in Greece would deprive the world of these great sporting venues being built at all. Yes it all boils down to money but then the games has progressed over the years and if it wasnt for huge sponsorship deals the games probably couldnt be afforded by many countries. As lymmbo says as the oylmpics move from country you experience diffrent cultures, it would get a bit boring if the same country held it time and time again and would only be so much sameness people would tolerate and then I expect visitor numbers would dwindle.

Our pupils have benefitted enormously from having the Olympics in this country. There have been many Olympic themed sports events held for schoolchildren across the city. We held our own 'Mini-Olympics' A torch -bearer has been to school, with his torch, to share his experiences and his enthusiasm and they all got to have a 'hold'. Many, if not most of them, got to see the torch relay somewhere in our city . The significance of the Oympics has been brought home to them, almost literally, and they wouldn't have had half a share of the excitement and enthusiasm for the event if it had been held in another country.

Thoroughly enjoyed it and refuse to listen to those who didn't and who would put it down. I am PROUD to be British and revelled in the Britishness of it. It stirred me, inspired me and brought back feelings I have not been "allowed" to feel for a long time. I also felt quite emotional (and being British it's hard for me to admit that).
Now back to the BBC to watch more of (and I am sure it will be) the best Olympics ever (yes, those of you doubters, EVER!!) ... Jane |

I didn't mean that the Olympic athletes have not trained exhaustively for years and deserve their chance to shine, but that all the commercialism, sponsorship and general hype has spoilt it, I know a brilliant sportsman from Corfu unable to progress to where he should have got because he did not have the necessary contacts in his sport. I helped to sponsor a Kenyan runner's training for years, otherwise he couldn't have afforded even trainers. There are so many potentially great sportsmen and women out there without the opportunities to progress,
There are two past Olympians of my acquaintance, neither got any money from being in the games, they did it for love of their respective countries, and the glory of being in the team was enough. Sport, particularly football, has become big business, and I sad to see the Olympic Games relying on Lloyds, Macdonalds etc. I want to be able to concentrate on the events themselves without these distractions...suppose I am also anti because I always found Sebastian Coe obnoxious- albeit brilliant!
