Although Corfu isnt a big island, & Ive never been south of Corfu town, is the Kavos end that bit warmer than the north end, or does that just happen back here, in blighty.

I'm no expert, but I know the north coast gets the wind called locally Maistro, which would keep temps down a bit.
Thank goodness

We have been staying in Benitses since 1976, and eventually stopped visiting Kassiopi, as every time we went it rained. Admittedly, we do visit in September, which can be more susceptible to rain, but it was off putting. Managed to go occasionally in the last few years and it didn't rain, but many a time we have driven south to Marathia and there has been rain in Corfu town, but none in Marathia, or Benitses
Therefore going off our experiences, I have to agree with Janmanessi. The south has a lot to offer, especially if you keep away from Kavos!! |

There are some lovely places to the south of Corfu town, and I suspect that you are not the only one who has not ventured south of Corfu Town. I must admit that we only go north maybe once or twice on each holiday, but always try to visit at least one new place in Corfu in each visit. After visiting for such a long time, you may think we have seen all the island, but I can assure you we haven't yet.

Having said that, Marathia on the south west coast often has a nice cooling breeze, so no need to keep cooling off in the sea, but having said that, the sea is lovely there, nice easy walk into it. Our favourite beach, so if you do venture south, I highly recommend it.
Also, Benitses, which has got a shingle beach as opposed to the long sandy beach at Marathia, is a lovely fishing village, and it is always interesting to walk around the old village. Less than 13 weeks before we go, and now getting excited about it, providing we can get travel insurance for my husband.!!

Don't worry about possible climate differences! I suggest that Corfu is too small to have noticeable climate factors unless maybe at the top of Mount Pantokrator.
The Maestro is the prevailing north-west wind which blows in the Ionian Sea during the summer period. It is a pleasant and soft breeze accompanied by fine weather and light clouds. So north or south you may have the Maestro on the west and north coasts particularly after noon on a fine day. Just right for keeping comfortable on those broiling hot days! |

South is a bit warmer and if you go to the South East coast there is little or no breeze. We stay in Messonghi (wouldn't go to Kavos unless you are in the 18-25 age group). Messonghi is a lovely small village with really friendly locals and people come back there year after year, so it has built up a little 'holiday community' at this stage and all new people welcome.
We were there in May and had temps of late 20s, early 30s which was fab. Also, the south is not half as commercialised as the north of the island and has a more 'real Greece' feel to it. Depends on what you are looking for though - commercialised or not. The South West Coast is lovely too but remember that it has a strong breeze here - places like St George South, Stanta Barbara etc. They are a little more rural and smaller than Messonghi but they have huge sandy beaches whether as those on the South East Coast are a little more shingly.

In the past 30 years we have travelled by car to most areas, and just love that there are so many sides to this beautiful island.
The only area I tend to avoid now is Kavos, for obvious reasons, but since other more traditional resorts have been developed in the area, I should make the (relatively) long journey to the south-east coast again. I remember before the road was upgraded-what a journey that was! |

Dennis, sorry but the afternoon wind you mention is not the Maestro, this does come from the north or north west, but lasts for 3 days at least and indicates a change in the weather, good or bad.
What you describe, the afternoon wind is a KATABATIC wind, from the Greek katabaticos- meaning, going downhill (wikipedia). It is caused by the difference in temperatures between the hot land and the cooler sea. Sailors watch for it around the island, as the gusts can easily catch out the unwary. It always fades by evening. All the island sailing guides warn of the katabatic winds around Corfu. Back to the topic. A long term visitor to Corfu, had the saying that, during the summer months, that good weather came when a north wind prevailed, but a southerly prevailing wind indicated change. We've not managed to prove him incorrect so far. (This was relevant to Kerasia). Bob

Whilst not wishing to contradict my mate Bob, the normal afternoon winds we get on Corfu during the summer are probably neither the Maisro or katabatic; this on the basis that the wind blows in the same direction whether you are on the east coast or west coast. IT is probably more of an "onshore wind" - onshore to the bulk of the adjacent mainland, that is. Note that this wind can build to F8 well offshore to the north of the island and is blowing north west.
A katabatic wind is exactly as Bob describes, except that it gets stronger the closer to the shore one gets. The worst I have ever experinced was whilst trying to moor to the quayside in Kioni (Ithaca) where it was gusting to 25 knots. Note here that the northeast coast of Corfu is in the lee of the wind - this would not be the case if it was katabatic in nature.
In my experience, the Maistro blows for an odd number of days (1, 3, 5 etc - but never an even number: why, I've no idea!) will blow for the full 24 hours per day and can bring heavy cloud and rain.
I would agree with Bob's comment regarding the general wind direction/quality of the weather. Prolonged southerly winds will always bring a deterioration in the weather as the hot north African wind picks up moisture as it crosses the Med, then cools at it reaches the mountains (including those of Albania) forming haze, could and then rain.

I have been over all of Corfu and find the weathers much the same, though I must admit I did not like Kavos, its very flat and full of 18-30 groups not a quiet holiday place. We took our sons for a day they were 18 &19 yrs they were not too keen either, it will all depend on what you want out of your holiday, I love the north for the mountains and small villages but you can go from top to bottom of the island in a day stopping off at places for a while, hope this helps you

What it all boils down to is, no matter what end of the island you are staying in, hire a car if possible and travel to the opposite end! It's not difficult; we do it several times each year - last 2 year NW to south, and this year South to anywhere that we fancy!
As to where you stay...horses for courses! Whatever takes your fancy. Just enjoy the island; spend your money and encourage other people to visit. Sue
