I carry these wipes all the time and use them as a top up if I have been in the sea, or it is a long time since using my mossie precautions.
Superdrug do a deet one and a non-deet one suitable for children.
Also very useful for the airport on the last day. People often forget that Corfu airport is built on a lagoon and you often have to queue outside. And the little blighters take full advantage!

I must be one of the very lucky ones as I've been to Corfu twice and never been bitten. I have only ever put on protection in the evening when they're at their hungriest. In fact, I've only had 2 bites in my life and that was when I was in Mexico a couple of years ago.

Having said that my son had never been bitten until a holiday in Corfu a few years ago and he had a horrendous reaction. Almost his whole leg swelled up and was very painful. Luckily it was 2 days before he came home so could get antibiotics for the infection from his GP.

I'm going to be extra careful this time and apply some protection during the day. How does that work though. Do you put it on over sun cream or does the protection go on first?

Hi Shirley,
If, god forbid, it happens again you can buy antibiotics at the pharmacy without a prescription, reasonably priced too!

Shirley, this happens to my daughter, and she has to get a steroid injection and a course of antibiotics.
I wouldn't wait until you get home to seek treatment, since this can be potentially very serious.

Was watching Embarrassing Bodies (I know, I know!) last night and they were talking about mosquito bites, and why some people don't seem to get bitten.
Scientists have identified what it is on their skin that repels mossies from these individuals, and are planning on creating an insect repellent incorporating these ingredients.
Hopefully, a surefire way of keeping the blighters at bay!!

Thanks for the advice. My son was 20 at the time and on holiday with his mates so typically he waited until he got home. Thankfully the antibiotics from his GP did the trick.

Saw a programme on telly a few years back when I guy was bitten on holiday but left it thinking it would heal.
Several weeks later he finally sought treatment, only to be told that the infection was too far gone, and he had to get his lower leg amputated!!Unhappy

Been here since Monday. Mozzies haven't been a problem, only a few bites between the 3 of us. Main problem has been the wasps and have realised that you need to eat out after 8.00pm or they are a real nuisance.

Hi,
Just set light to ground coffee, it produces smoke that he wasps don't like. Seems early for the wasps to be a nuisance, they are normally more prolific in September when the grape harvest is and they get drunk on the ripening grapes.

Just back from Sidari and the Mossies were a total pain! Tried all the usual tricks like after anti-histamines for weeks before and during the holiday, sun with repellant, plug-ins, lemon shower gel etc etc but I still got 19 bites! Nothing seemed to make a difference. Cry  Shame as had a great holiday but admittedly this would put me off going back. Never been bitten so much in Greece and wasn't bitten like that when went to Ipsos in 2003. Strange. I tend to react quite badly to them as well. Think the best advice is use everything and be prepared for the worse. Hopefully something works and they leave you alone.

Yes it does work!
Don't use run of the mill Nescafe as that only melts!---it's got to be Greek Coffee granules, as Greek coffee is made from the husk of the bean not the bean itself, you'll find it in any supermarket/mini market!
Sprinkle a heap of the coffee into a tin/foil dish ashtray---light it---it will smoulder--try rearranging it into a line, that ways it smoulders more evenly!
I would suggest the dish is placed under a table when eating,  out doors of course---or if on a patio at feet level.
I also light the Mosquito repellent spirals ,they come with their own stand---last for up to 8/12 hours, that's your feet, ankles and legs taken care ofClap
Don't forget to apply a Deet product or Avon SSS to those parts as well as the rest of uncovered skinWacko

I hate to sound like ''A Jobs Comforter'' in my experience NoThumbs Down

Try and wear long trousers and shirts while out and about during the evening--nothing tight as they will get through them!
Cover yourself from head to toe with repelant--even ones ears!

When leaving your room, close the bathroom window and spray with a mosquito killer from any supermarket, also spray your room when leaving and entering it--leave the lights off as they are also attracted to that as well as body heat and body smells, avoid wearing perfume & after shave!

Hi,
Why not just spray the room before you go out and then save on electricity?
There are also many apartments that have a special "key" that switches the electricity off as you leave the room so as to stop people leaving the air conditioning on all the time.

I bought a roll on from SuperdrUg to pop in my handbag for top ups (after spraying before going out). Only had about 5 bites in 2 weeks. My advice - if you get bitten leave it well alone, don't touch, don't apply creams etc. This was the advice hubby used to give me but I couldn't follow, I had to apply cream or something but now I know he is actually right (first time lol). But we are all different and react differently. Anyway, recommend the roll on for top ups. I think its Jungle Formula.

Finally going to get round to sharing my ‘not so well’ kept secret!! Over the years I have tried all the branded products to relieve the sheer pain of a mozzie bite! However, some years ago someone suggested Elizabeth Arden 8hr hand cream!! Don’t laugh - even my Greek ‘family’ have been using this for many years having left them some cream many times, better still it’s great for children too!! You really only need just the smallest amount and 1 tube which lasts me around a month (Mozzies see me as a meat-fest). It relieves the initial pain quite quickly, hence no need to scratch, I also like to keep it in the fridge so it has extra ‘there there’ qualities. Now I’m living here, my friend in the UK has already asked if I need some without any prompting on my behalf - yes, you guessed it, she has also been using it for the last few years!! Guess whats on my Christmas list???
