I returned home last Tuesday evening from a week at Maleme on Crete with my Mother & Sister. The weather was overcast on our arrival and for the next two days with rain and thunderstorms over night. It was also very windy which made the sea rough & noisy, very noisy. Maleme seemed to be a haphazard collection of buildings, quite spread out and without a centre. We stayed at Mike's in an apartment but on a bed & breakfast basis, it was five minute walk to the hotel building for the good buffet breakfast. Mikes's is family run, the buildings & grounds were well maintained and the staff were excellent.
Crete is covered in orange trees and fresh orange juice, often squeezed to order, is readily available and delicious. I ate more meat on Crete than I tend to eat on Corfu. I found meal prices (comparing like for like) averaging about a third less than I am used to in North East Corfu and Corfu Town. Meals tended to be simpler and automatically come with chips unless we stated otherwise when ordering. Sample size desserts (sample size varied from a couple of mouth fulls to almost regular serving size) and glasses or mini bottle of raki are brought with your bill after lunch or dinner, even if you have already ordered and eaten a dessert. The Cretan goat cheese was delicious. I wouldn't have thought cheese pie with honey would work but it does. We took a couple of excursions with Thomson, there was no local tourist office in Maleme to offer alternatives. They were both long days and involved quite a lot of travelling time but the coaches were comfortable and we got to see more of the island than we expected. Knossos was impressive and interesting. We also used the local bus service which was extensive, frequent, reliable, inexpensive and ran well into the evening, even on Sunday. We visited Kolimbari, Platanias and Chania via bus. Deedee

Glad you had a nice time at Mikes Deedee. Only ever want to go to Greece and although I enjoyed Corfu Mikes is the only place I've ever been to twice, and after reading your report I'm hankering to go back now!! Went both times in September. Is difficult to get in though as they have an awful lot of returnees. They are a lovely family nothing is to much trouble. We ate in the restaurant most nights Helena's cooking agrees with me and she's a Lovely lady to boot. Does Mike still sit in reception of an evening? Struck up a real bond with him, often gave me things to taste out of his garden. Like you say is spread out a bit, but everything is only a bus trip away with the bus stop right outside!! Oh and one of the most endearing thing's about Malame, "No Mossies." |

Thank you Frilly2.
Hi Hereford Mick - yes Mike still sits in reception of an evening. We really enjoyed staying at Mike's. I could probably talk myself into another visit. You are right about the absence of mosquitos too. The Crete Veterans Friends & Family Association were there at the same time as us. They have been going there for a long time and it was lovely to see the mutual respect & appreciation between them and the MIke's family. Deedee ![]() |

Thank's Deedee sound's like they are still in good form then, They all work so hard to make sure everything is fine when you stay. The last time we were there they had a large group of hang glider's staying lovely to watch from the restaurant balcony as they came down and even Manos had a go. ![]() If you do ever venture back can recommend a lovely restaurant we found if you walk along the coast path down to Gerani it's called the" small paradise" really nice and on a Friday I think one of the best Greek night's iv'e been to. Have to have a taxi back after
