Returning to Lesvos at the end of May yippie! Staying at the Niki - Michael again. Thinking about walking from Petra to the Vafios taverna for lunch which is said to be about 6km but I've no idea what the terrain is like. We walked from Stipsi to Vafios last year which was not too bad but I have had a bypass op since then. Has anyone done the walk, is it likely to be a bit too much? Would prefer not to drive as I would have to miss out on the 1/2 kilo!

I was registered on the original forum under a different username, and you gave me some wonderful details and information on our first visit to Petra (only 6 weeks to go now). Just come across your posts, and Sharon is correct about Tripadvisor. If you access the Lesvos Travel section on the forums, there are a lot of very helpful advisors who I am sure will have the info that you want.

I'll keep you company Kev! Glad to hear your tickets have arrived - not long now! At least we are into May now, so another month nearer for me! I've been trying to find some Lesbos webcams and can't and have tried to find a good map but can't either. Last year I bought a great map from Terrain.gr for Kos and they have done every island except Lesbos! All of this rain is making me feel I have soooo long to wait!

there is a very good map in the greek series road its no.212 i got it from amazon. or www.road.gr
thats the terrible thing about this time of year i seem to spend it wishing my life away, burning the days til 26th, then it can go slow slow. but once 9th june is here it'll be back to looking forward to kalymnos in september!

will be sure to put some more taverna info on here there is one in particular i want to try at the far end of petra beach towards anaxos that is said to be very good, we did not get there last year.
think i may hold on a few more days before buying my euros rate has improved a couple of cents in the last week. i have a feeling credit cards will be even less welcome this year.
wondering if i'll be buying euros at all for september or next year?
 car is booked up got a decent price from economycarrentals at £110 for 4 days and fully comp inc cdw etc with no excess payments or extras to pay when i get there. 2 weeks meet and greet parking for £65 never been so cheap!
guide books and maps all packed in the carry on, they are a joy to find for lesvos very few available and all pricey and none of them much use. best to buy when you get there. funnily enough our guide for kalymnos is totally out of print now as it was published in 1986 has some pictures of how kalymnos was then! saw it on amazon at £45 may flog it to them!!

Yes, tooo soon to pack! You'll only get in a muddle nearer to departure! We've considered buying euros for August now in light of the increase in rates. Not so sure now, with the European election results - will there still be Euros in Greece by August - with all the anti-austerity talk! I should get in quick now Kev, before the rates plummet after this weekend of European news.
I will wait with bated breath for your taverna reviews! Economy Car Rentals - are they a Lesbos based company? What made you go with them. Everyone on TA talks about one company, not that one though. |

They are linked with Economy care hire in the UK. I believe this wing of the company is based in Cyprus. Have used them 5 of 6 times all but one have been good and the one that was poor I got a refund on. The beauty is that instead of getting ripped by local car hire charges for cdw, tyre damage, excess reduction charges, personal injury cover, 500e excess etc etc you pay a flat rate what it says on the invoice is what you pay. ECT is slightly different to ECHH (Economy car hire) in that you pay them an arrangement fee of 23e (4 days) and the 108e balance to the partner hire company, in this case Avis who are worldwide. But you pay no local charges. Best part is they are not more expensive and use good hire companies usually Avis, Hertz or Autounion so you get a decent car. Failed just once at the end of the season when Autounion claimed not to have a car on Lefkas and subbed it out to a local hire company who gave us a clapped out filthy old banger, but as I said they were great when we complained and sent pictures! Am not sure about the company you are refering to but think they are OK I didnt hear any complaints from folks at the n-m that used them no idea what they charged though.
