Someone educate me please.
I'm beginning to like the idea of having a Kindle, to read Sidney Larkin's book re Kalami for one. I was having a look on Amazon the other day and have been left somewhat confused about which of the 4 versions currently available would be right for me.
We don't have a wifi internet connection at home so would the basic model work or not?
Do I need to upgrade to a wifi connection or just buy one of the Kindles with inbuilt wifi?
There is a Kindle with a keyboard - what is that for?
There is the basic model then the Kindle touch then the keyboard model so if the basic model is not touch, does not have a keyboard and doesn't need to be connected to a PC how do you download to it/access books to download to it?
Can anyone help?
Deedee (aka confused by Kindle)

Hi, I have a kindle and love it. We also have a few at the school I work at so have seen them all!
In a nutshell - Kindle Keyboard - bulkier with keyboard if you want to use it send emails etc. I never use the keyboard except for typing book reviews. It does have audio which is great if you want to listen to audio books by the pool, which I love! Kindle (cheapest) absolutely tiny but with the same size screen. Less storage but still stores more books than you could read! NO audio. Kindle Touch - cant see the point of this one over the one above - although it does have audio and at a weight somewhere between the cheap kindle and the Keyboard. As far as 3g goes - really, I can't see it is useful. All the above can connect to WIFI and unless you are desparate for a book at the top of a mountain it has limited use (obviously my opnion!) So... if you want Audio I would go for the touch with wifi, if you dont, go for the basic one with wifi (as it is smaller than the keyboard) I have a keyboard as that is all the choice there was when I bought it! It is so amazing for reading on holiday - I regularly used to take ten books with me and leave them all behind at the end of the holiday. Whichever you buy, enjoy! Jacquie

Sorry, re above, I forgot to say - you can download your books easily onto it with a cable to your computer so you don't need wifi at all. However, if you are away and want to buy something you can log onto a wifi point somewhere (accommodation/bar) and buy a book with a card registered to your amazon account .

I wonder about messy screens with the touch. I have the basic kindle with wifi and find it great - although I must admit I do sometimes forget it isnt touch screen like my iphone - and feel a bit stupid when I stroke the screen

My other half`s just got a touch screen one and has bought a screen protector as it ends up covered with paw prints like a phone - I prefer mine which has the keyboard and side page turning - just cos I'm used to it I suppose.

Wendy has the basic model, which as stated only downloads anywhere where a free wifi is offered, without connecting to anything else. She was able to download all over the island without trouble.
I have the keyboard model with 3G, given the knowledge I have now, I would choose the basic model given the choise again. The keyboard is easyer to use when selecting books to buy, but not worth the extra weight in handling the book when reading. The amount of books it holds is way beyond what I would want to keep, and you can just as easyly delete items when you no longer need them. Just think of the weight saveing in your luggage when you just stick your Kindle in your pocket. Bob

I am thinking about exactly that Bob, especially after seeing one at the weekend and realising just how small & lightweight they actually are. For the last couple of years, mainly due to all the charter airlines getting stingy with the included luggage allowance, I've only taken one book out with me and made use of the 'libraries' most accommodations & tourist offices offer. This has encouraged me to read types of book I might not have chosen otherwise.
I was thinking that with a Kindle I can still do that and also have more books I've actively chosen to hand.
Thank you to everyone for your replies.

I have the basic kindle and love it. Recently a friend gave me a copy of a DVD she had bought on a well know auction site which cost £2.99 for 7000 books and they are very easy to load onto the kindle. You still have to buy recent releases but these DVDs are great.

I love my Kindle, and it is absolutely brilliant to take on holiday, as you say it goes in your pocket, no need to take the weight of books~~~and also, you can get loads and loads of books on it x

The keyboard one is hardly heavy, much lighter than one book - however, if you don't want to have music on it (you can have a few CD's) or audiobooks which I wouldn't be without on holiday (so so relaxing!) - then the basic one without 3g is the way to go for sure!
Also... £5 off at Tesco at the moment x |
