Scary stuff - thank goodness the Greek authorities now insist on earthquake standard when building. It is a lot of steel and concrete but when you see what damage it prevents well worth it. Also worth mentioning that many building insurances do not cover for earthquake damage so check your cover now if you have a property overseas.
Beside the sea all worries wash away!!

Numpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Numpty Dumpty had a great fall. All due to several earthquakes???

It seems that the number of aftershocks and severity is reducing, let us all hope this trend continues.

From a friend that lived in Los Angeles, aftershocks are good as they release the pressure build up. Hope that the pressure is not still building and these poor people get a respite from it.

Only small number of Cephalonia buildings set for demolition

Just 2.5 percent of buildings on the Ionian island of Cephalonia have been slated for demolition by state engineers so far following damage suffered during two large earthquakes on January 26 and February 3. The engineers, however, warned that almost every building they inspected that was illegally constructed or had unlicensed additions suffered extensively in the two quakes

Infrastructure Minister Yiannis Chrysochoidis was on the Ionian island on Monday to be briefed on the progress of inspections to buildings and infrastructure, such as roads, ports, marinas and the airport. He headed a meeting of high-ranking government and local authority officials, who said that from January 27 to February 10, a total of 4,026 buildings were inspected in the Cephalonia towns of Argostoli and Lixouri, adding that inspections were also carried on the nearby island of Ithaca, which was also rocked by the quakes. Of these buildings, 42 percent were deemed temporarily uninhabitable and need to undergo extensive repairs. From February 10-16, inspectors carried out the second round of checks on 1,579 badly damaged buildings finding that 30 percent can be inhabited pending repairs, 62 percent will require major reconstruction and 8 percent will have to undergo a third inspection before being possibly demolished. Of the 122 buildings that will have to be inspected for a third time, 40, or 2.5 percent are destined for certain demolition.

Does any member have any up to date information as how the island is recovering from the earthquake damage. I am aware that they are still suffering from many aftershocks on a daily basis. Will the island be in a fit condition to welcome visitors now the tourist season has started?

"Does any member have any up to date information as how the island is recovering from the earthquake damage. I am aware that they are still suffering from many aftershocks on a daily basis. Will the island be in a fit condition to welcome visitors now the tourist season has started?"  In reply to this question: I have lived here for 23 years and stay in Svoronata. We had a couple of stronger than usual earthquakes in Jan and Feb and loads of aftershocks. Since end of April it has died down dramatically where we now get the odd tremble which, to be honest, I do not even notice anymore and only know about it when somebody asks if I felt it!  As for recovery: Most of the damage in the winter was in Lixouri region affecting older houses which will probably take an age to sort out trying to get compensation etc. The other problem is road damage in the area above Myrtos on the coastal road to Assos which means there is a traffic diversion which takes longer to get to Assos as you have to travel East coast to West coast going down to Assos from Vassilikades. I work with Agni Travel with villas all over the island from Fiscardo to Lixouri and they are all fine. For our guests the earthquake has had NO EFFECT whatsovever apart from road diversions. It may be possible that you have read we are suffering many aftershocks but first of all the word suffering  is not correct, maybe experiencing. But this is like experiencing ripples in the sea after a ferry boat has passed by. Business as usual on Kefalonia EVERYBODY WELCOME !!

On the way to Lixouri coming from Argostoli, we noticed that the tower of the church of KOUROUKLATA is broken. It's bending dangerously like the Pisa tower in Italy. We noticed also another house that was completely broken in the same village. Otherwise, we didn't notice (no longer) damage on the island.
