A friend has just emailed me to say they have been text' to say their particular ferry has be sent to Kefalonia to act as accommodation for displaced people on the island, and that therefore an alternative will be provided if necessary, don't know which one it was or what line they were using.
Thank goodness for modern building regulations insisting on earthquake protection on new builds and roof replacements. Things would be a whole lot worse otherwise.

I just can't understand why there's hardly any media coverage in the UK. As if Kefalonia doesn't matter.Angry

The aftershocks continue in Kefalonia, some of them are quite strong. Check date and time information on the side of the image. A couple of ferries have be diverted to act as floating hotels for the islanders. It is forecast that the aftershocks will continue for some time.

Here is a link to the latest information for help to Kefalonia.

Just under a week after a 5.9-Richter earthquake hit the Ionian island of Cephalonia authorities are close to completing the first round of inspections to buildings damaged by Sunday’s tremor, which was followed by dozens of strong aftershocks.

“People are starting to return to their homes," Cephalonia Mayor Alexandros Parisis told Kathimerini. Hundreds of residents spent nearly a week sleeping outdoors or on two ferries dispatched to the island for this reason.

“Less than 1,000 people are still on the ships. They will be leaving gradually over the next few days,” Parisis added.

A report published on Friday by the Infrastructure Ministry, which is responsible for the inspections, said that 500 of 1,000 homes that have so far been assessed, most in the town Lixouri, just 2 kilometers from the earthquake’s epicenter, have been deemed uninhabitable.

The report added that six of the island’s 53 schools need to undergo repairs before children can return, while the general hospital at Lixouri will reopen within the next few days despite small cracks in its supporting pillars.

The Environment Ministry, meanwhile, on Friday announced a measure ensuring that owners of illegally built homes on Cephalonia and nearby Ithaca that have suffered damage will be granted an extension to pay a fee securing amnesty from demolition. The measure will be presented to Parliament in the next few days.

Two navy ships, the Prometheus and Chios, sailed for Cephalonia on Saturday to transport medicines and basic goods to the Ionian island, which was rocked by an earthquake last Sunday.

Six doctors were also on board the ships.

The Chios can accommodate 250 people if needed.

Safety checks on homes and other buildings on the island are continuing.

Cephalonia declared a natural disaster zone

The Ionian island of Cephalonia was on Monday night declared a natural disaster zone after it was hit by two large earthquakes on January 26 and on Monday measuring 5.8 and 5.7 on the Richter scale respectively, as well as by dozens of aftershocks in the 4-5 Richter range.

Crews from the Technical Chamber of Greece and the Ministry of Infrastructure were midway through assessing buildings on the island that suffered damage in the first quake - among them schools, hospitals and a nursing home - before Monday's tremor.

The general secretary of public works, Stratos Simopoulos told Kathimerini that by Sunday some 1,800 buildings had been inspected on the island and that 750 of them were deemed dangerous.

"We will now have to inspect every building all over again, even those given the green light," Simopoulos said. "As far as Lixouri port is concerned, where the problems became worse [with Monday's earthquake], two experts with experience in port construction will be arriving on Tuesday to assess the damage."

The military will also be sending frogmen to inspect the underwater damage suffered at the port.

The Infrastructure Ministry, meanwhile, said that it will be providing residents who are currently sleeping in their cars, at public buildings deemed safe and on two specially dispatched ferry boats with temporary housing in the form of prefabricated and mobile homes, as the weather seems to be conspiring against the quake-hit islanders with low temperatures and rain.

Government authorities as well as church and citizens' groups have also started providing food and other aid to those whose homes are uninhabitable.

Associated Press have reported that tents have been erected to house homeless, and portable classrooms are on the way, as the school buildings have to be checked again for safety.
There's a long report on yahoo news.

Aftershocks continue to shake quake-struck Cephalonia

Aftershocks continued to shake Cephalonia on Friday with a 4.1-Richter tremor hitting the Ionian island in the early hours of the morning.

The island's buildings and infrastructure have suffered serious damage due to strong earthquakes over the past two weeks.

Apart from providing shelter for islanders who have been left homeless due to the quakes, authorities have been scrambling to repair widespread damage in a bid to ensure that the island is operational ahead of the tourist season. The island is one of the most popular in the Ionian for foreign visitors.

Kefalonia is still getting many aftershocks, some of them are quiet strong. This morning there were 2 off the west coast of the island. The first at at 04:34 local time registering 3.6 and another at 08:23 local time registering 4.3. In between there were several smaller events. Due to the number of events in a short period of time some experts still forecast that there could be a "Big One". Let us all hope that this is not the case. I am sure that many forum members, regardless of their island allegiances, send their best wishes out to the people of Kefalonia.

Yes, without a doubt we do send our most sincere best wishes to the people of Kefalonia. We had a lovely holiday on the island when the children were younger and didn't mind coming away with us and before we found our lovely Kassiopi on Corfu. While we were there it was very exciting because the filming of Captain Corelli's Mandolin was taking place. Lovely happy memories for us and our friends who we go on  holiday with every year. We certainly hope that on this occasion the experts fears are not going to come true.
