Hi everyone
We have been holidaying in Corfu for almost 15 years but decided we needed a change and have chosen Zante, staying in Kalamaki. Any tips, hints and ideas of trips, places to/not to eat, things to do etc. etc. gratefully received. I'm interested in as much info as I can get although this doesn't seem to be a very popular forum like the Corfu one. Do they have mosquitos in Zante, like in Corfu please. Many, many thanks in advance. Forgot to say, we have a 7 year old and a 2 year old. Thanks. x |

Hi,
Here is a report from the old forum, little dated, but may be of help.

How come no-one is replying to my message? I am used to one of the Corfu resort forums which is very busy - are there fewer people out there on this one? Maybe it's too early for people to be logging onto holiday forums yet. If anyone can help with the questions in my original post - or suggest a different forum perhaps - I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks. x |

Hi Charlie7,
As this forum is mostly Corfu based that could be why you aren't getting too many replies. However if, as you say, you know of a busier "Corfu"? forum that can answer your question perhaps it would be best if you posted there. You may find if you do a Google search that there is a dedicated Zante forum which may be of much better help.

If it helps, I have been to Zante and I cannot remember an absence of mosquitoes, when there are none it stands out!!! Only places I have ever been to where there were none was Elounda in Crete and Sigri on Lesbos!!
Sadly I have not been to Kalamaki so can't help you on specifics. |

We went a couple of years ago. The beach is very small because of the protection of turtles so you need to get there early to get a sunbed - but its worth it, because its lovely. You can actually walk all along the beach to Laganas - a lovely walk.
Can't remember the names of the restaurants we went to. There's a quirky one beginning with Z on the main road which was nice.
The main strip is pretty lively - if its not what you want walk to the end and turn right into the old town where Oceanic Bar is - fun bar. There is a lovely little walk through the fields from near the Iguana bar to the old part of town.
Hope that's of some use.

Our first holiday to Greece was on Zante but we stayed around the next bay to Laganas... real sin bin! We hated that place and then we did a Beach BBQ trip and at the end of the evening we were deposited in Kalamaki in a bar where the girls were dancing on the bar... not a good place for kids! All in all we were disappointed as it was too lively, we just wandered around the gift shops until we got collected by the coach... bit of an eye opener for our first Greek holiday. Now we prefer somewhere much quieter like Arillas or Agios Gordios or St. George North in Corfu.

It wouldnt put me off going to Zante... if someone offered me a free holiday I would go and explore a bit more, I hear the other side of the island is lovely.. Tsilivi is apparently.

p.s. we had a boat trip around the island and it was lovely, visiting the caves and swimming off the boat, then visiting the famous wreck on the beach. We stayed near the next bay which was very quiet, (cant remember the name of it) but it was within a short walk through the olive groves to Laganas. We got on a small motor boat and was "dumped" on Turtle Island for the afternoon and had a hair raising trip back.. all good fun. Thinking on it now it would be nice to revisit it. I expect it has changed a lot now.
