For the regulars that go to the Nafsika and others
who might be considering going or trying the restaurant and sampling the
wonderful home cooked food, they now have a page on Facebook. Will be back there 1st two weeks in July and cannot wait for some serious chilling out https://www.facebook.com/#!/NafsikaHotel |

Thanks for the link Steven.
On my first holiday to Corfu I stayed in San Stefanos I think the year was 1978. At that time there was the Hotel Nafsika, a handful of country cottages and 4 tavernas. The owners of the tavernas and Hotel Nafsika took it in turns to hold a special Greek night. This helped to share the income from the resident holiday makers equally between the proprietors. It also ensured that on every night of your holiday there was a terrific atmosphere, as everyone holidaying at San Stefanos were gathered in one taverna more or less. The whole village really got to know each other and the ambiance was mellow and chilled.
I'm now wondering, how many tavernas are there now in San Stefanos and does the village still feel as chilled and friendly?

My first Corfu hol was 1984 I think. We stayed up the top of the hill in the single Romanza apartment which later became the Romanza Hotel. The owner Mr Costa used to give us homemade wine from the cellar underneath the apartments where he lived. We made the long treck down the hill and there was only about 6 tavernas and we decided to eat in the Romanza hotel every night it was that good, they reserved our table and I had to repeat what we had for the bill as they had always forgotten. It was run by Spiro and his dad and about three more waiters. Spiros in them days was the spit of Patrick Swayze. The main road in San Steph was empty with only a few buildings and as we trundled back up the hill there was a few nice apartments with pools. In bad weather which was nearly every night Spiros arranged for his dad to take us home in his caravanette which he put 6 white plastic seats in. (no elf and safety) and we all got home safely. Memories.

You would find a different Agios Stefanos if you went back now Kebabx, the village is still chilled and friendly as it’s ever been with a lot of the original owners still there. Speros now runs the Nafsika with his father George taking a back seat now but still helping out with Theodora still running the kitchen. As with all places things change and there are numerous Tavernas and restaurants now. In fact the village is split in two. You have the newer and relatively busy part as you wind down the hill from the Romanza (this was more or less empty when I first went in 1989) But the older part, where the Nafsika is, is still quiet and peaceful and relatively unchanged. A high percentage are repeat visitors, including
myself, which tells you all you need to know |

I must return one day, to relive some very happy memories. I must also return to see how Spiros has aged (spit of Elvis), he was one hell of a flirt in his heyday if I remember correctly ;-)

Very good, and his final summing up is the main reason we keep returning to Corfu. Always get a cheerful welcome.
