Hello Everyone,

I'm new to this Forum and would really appreciate some Help with Holiday Choice..

My girlfriend keeps on at me about researching a holiday for June 2012.

She says she wishes for a Holiday in Greece.

What we are looking for are

-Greece
- 7 or 10 days
- bout £400 each if possible
- somewhere with a nice beaches, sandy only.
- nice restaurants, traditional food, various restaurant as long as there traditional Greek and nothing English food wise.
- it does matter about what the hotel is like, as long as it is comfortable and clean, but we will be out and about most of the time
- and also a holiday where we can explore, stuff to do in the day.

Can anybody tell me somewhere this might be in Greece?

Thanks

Jimmy

Not particularly Corfu then?
There are many smaller resorts on the island which haven't been taken over by the British.
San Stephanos, Arillas come to mind.
The cost will depend on where your flying from, but most apartments should be within your price range.
We paid around £800 for two, for two weeks from Newcastle in mid June, however we're going to Sidari, which is definitely too British for you by the sound of it.

Where are you hoping to fly from?

I think Stoupa in the Pelopponese would tick all your boxes but these days you can only get there direct from Gatwick and possibly Manchester.

I have heard good reports about Parga on the Epirus coast, you get there from Preveza airport, again Gatwick I think.

Good luck with your search - I am sure you will get more suggestions on here too.

We have been several times to Haraki on Rhodes

Great small coastal village, traditional food, cosmopolitan visitors, certainly Brits are usually in the minority

Good bus service to Rhodes town  several good excusions and car hire would give you the whole island to explore including some wonderful mountain villages.

Haraki has a mostly sandy beach, just a few patches which are a tad courser and just round the headland from the castle there is a white fine sand beach

Most of the accommodation is self Catering, Olympic go there.  A couple of good supermarkets selling fresh bread etc daily

Most of the accommodation faces the beach

Apart from the beaches (which are near by) dont think you can go far wrong with Kassiopi on Corfu, nice accomidation lovely food  in whatever style you require) brillient weather and a lovely setting a nice small harbour, there is a lot of English but the Greeks have maintianed there independance and its a multi cultural enviroment. What more could you ask for and it ticks MOST of your boxes

Hi Jimmy
Welcome to the forum.Thumbs Up. I agree with Janet123, have been going to San Stefanos for what will be our 8th year this year. Would recommend the Romanza in San Stef, although up a steep hill, if you are going to hire a car this would not be a problem. There are plenty of villages and resorts in the area for you to discover all with their own charms.
I hope you find what you are looking for, and if you do choose Corfu there are plenty of other people who have their own favourites.
Good look with your search and have a good holiday.

Hi you will always get English food no matter were you go, we have been going to Corfu now for 10 years and we can always find tradition Greek Traveners in the small villages, we go to one that serve food on brown paper, and I can say the food is fantastic, he does not have menus and just tells you what he has in that day,  and speaks little English, so no matter which village traditional or tourist you will always find good Greek food as wel., Corfu is a beautiful Island so green and mountainous there is so much to see and do, you are best hireing a car to get the most out of your holiday, hope this helps you have a great holiday were ever you go.Thumbs Up

Thank you all for your replies. Again I'm not too bothered about what food there is..Just my girlfriend being a bit picky.

Anyway, my girlfriend has now changed her mind and wants to go to Spain.
I'm sorry about this and I guess this is not really the right forum to ask where in Spain would be best to go???

Thanks anyways,

Jimmy

No don't do it, there is absolutely no comparison. You must give Corfu a try and I don't think you will ever want to go to Spain again. Have a quick look at the Marina hotel in Arrilas, read some reviews, check out the forums and I think you will get the picture, the Greeks are extremely friendly and welcoming people who make you feel like part of the family, we have never experienced even a fraction of that sort of hospitality in Spain and whenever we have been there we have both spent our holiday wishing we had gone to Greece, consequently the last time we were in Spain we decided never to return.

Firstly your girlfriend is making a good call. We fell in love with Greece first time on a visit to Rhodes in 1999 and got totally hooked on the food climate history and most of all the local people. We have returned almost every year usually twice a year and have now visited 22 islands.
A holiday in Greece can be anything you want it to be, do lots during the day or do nothing, go clubbing at night or enjoy a bit of peace in a taverna by the seashore with a jug of wine and a drop of ouzo.
If you want the sort of holiday where you dont have to laze about on the beach all day and want lots of exploring I would recommend Crete. Its unrivalled for archeology and museums (other than Athens) and the landscape is varied and breathtaking. Loads of traditional tavernas, and trips to Santorini which is spectacular, but if you want beaches they have that too. A car is a must and plan to return one day because it is impossible to cover in one holiday. The Malia area is popular with 18-30s but is not our bag, we went to a resort called Bali which suited us and is fairly central on the northern coast so made a good base but there are dozens to choose from.
Corfu also has loads to offer, the main town is brilliant the countyside lush and green, everyone will have there own suggestions of resort my preference is Paleokastritsa which is jaw droppingly beautiful, but there will be plenty of advice from all of the forum members I am certain and Im sure you would find the perfect one for you and your girlfriend.
Happy hunting.

Just read your last post! Ray and Sally are spot on, while I have nothing against Spain and have had a couple of good holidays there particularly in Seville. There is good food and sun in most parts of the med but the Greeks are by far the nicest most welcoming people you will meet. Your call good luck with whatever you decide.

Janet123 believe me business in Sidari would love it to be predominantly British, but its not any more, we are Si,darites, (oops soz Mrs Mushypea your name) but we love Agios N Kassioppi Kalami in fact loads of places top notch, but Sidari we put are roots down ..

Spain?! I've only been to Menorca so cannot advise too much, however my experience was that it was much more expensive than Greece (is now). The beaches were amazing, but don't even start me on the attitude of the locals! No idea how that compares to the Spanish Mainland coast resorts.

Ahhhhh Spain, must admit apart from the odd visit here and there since our first visit to Corfu in 2000... then we have never really had the desire to return. Although mainland Spain does have some really beautiful places to visit, ie Barcelona, Madrid, with wonderful buildings and fantastic places of interest...doesn't really compare with Corfu at all. Must agree with the other poster though, there are also some stunning beaches in Spain and we have always been fortunate to meet some lovely Spanish people on our visits (yes and some down right rude ones too!!!)

Have had some very good holidays in mainland Spain and the islands over the years, and found on the whole, the people were very friendly and courteous to us. But saying that since we have been coming to Corfu like most people on the site, have never had any wish to return to Spain. It feels so good when you get off the plane and realise that your back to your second home.Big smile
