Finally took the plunge and decided to give Halki a try.

Can anyone give some tips about tavernas etc, I'm guessing days out will be limited to some nice walks lazing on a beach. Are there regular ferries to Rhodes town or other islands?
Any info most welcome.

All the tavernas are good but my favourite was the one at the far left of the front, (with back facing the sea if that makes sense)

There is little to do on Halki except walk LOL The monastery is a long hot hike but worth it

Boatmen will take you to more secluded coves and pick you up later (promise)

There is a a daily local ferry to Rhodes but watch the return times, you may only be there long enough to explore the nearby castle and have lunch...  and there are also excursion ferries to Alimina, a fascinating island inhabited only by sheep but containing the ruins of the German U boat docks. Great for snorkeling

If you are a good swimmer it is possible to swim into the bay just before the fishermen return, with the dolphins following them, or you can just watch from the beach

The beach and rocks at the top of the hill through the village = along Tarpon Springs Boulevard is brilliant if you want to snorkel too. The place is full of octopus, eels and colourful fish

Although the island has no cars the village has everything you will need as long as your needs are fairly basic. There is a baker (there may even be two rival ones still) and a couple of good mini markets

Halki is not a place for loud music, more the sort of place to relax and watch the wonderful sunsets, everything turns pink, I kid you not!!

Enjoy

We loved it

Sounds just what we are looking for. Cant believe I'm asking this but for once it is probably relevent!! I'll take it as a given that the tavernas want cash not cards, I understand there is not bank on the island, is there an ATM or is it best to just take enough cash to last!!

Last I heard there was an ATM but not very reliable, you can change travellers cheques on the island though
No cards accepted anywhere that I know of LOL, though things may have changed, you never know!!

So I would recommend a mixture of cash and travellers cheques to be on the safe side

You will love it, peace and tranquility, unless there are elections when they go mad with fireworks LOL

Thanks, will probably do that just in case. They seem to have an election every time we go anywhere in Greece so I reckon the chances are high, and hrh loves fireworks.
We are only there for a week sadly, which tavernas should not be missed?

Definitely the one I mentioned, once we found it we ate there several times!!!

The taverna  behind the beach I mentioned on the road out of the village by the beach is great for lunch and coffee

The rest of the tavernas are good if not spectacular

Just a word to the wise, just in case anyone else is going to Halki this year, I understand that the ATM is out of action and unlikely to be sorted by the bank. So its important to take enough cash or travellers cheques which can be exchanged at the travel office Cool

Are you independant and transferring to KS by taxi? If so you might still make it. I have seen ferry not leaving till after 6pm on a Wednesday. The taverna mentioned is The  Black Sea, it changed hands a couple of years ago. My favs last year were Minori, at other end of harbour and Babis in centre but they all good, lunch time snack souvlaki and pita bread and real chips at Valentis under tree at harbour, they also do great pork chops, but really you will get great food in all of them. I was going to mention another two but I would keep going and prob recommend them all. I would not recommend trying to go to Rhodes for the day, remember the local ferries only go to KS on Rhodes. Last year the cat. did a day trip to Tilos if you were wanting a day trip and to see another island, I am sure it also went to Kalymnos, enjoy Halki, you will go back home and book for 2014.

No we are with Olympic, I guess we will have to wait and see. Olympic are unable to confirm if we will make it in time. Tilos sounds good, went to the lovely Kalymnos for the second time last year, they will never take me off if I go back again, it's my hearts home.

OK with Olympic there is still chance you will make it if flight is on time if not you will overnight in the Kassandra in Ixia, we have a few times it can be hit or miss depending on guests sometimes quiet but last time we had drunken women (noisier than drunken men  lol) but rooms etc were OK  and you will get collected after noon next day and taken to KS. Kalymnos will drop down a place after you stay on Halki. Geez do not think it was Kalymnos the cat went to think it was Nissoris.

So??? Was  Halki all you hoped for? Did you get the ferry on time? Are the two brothers each with their own ferries still at loggerheads and competing for business?

Waiting with bated breath.
