Hi,
Just a heads up to all that drive to Corfu, or anywhere for that matter if you will be driving through France.

The French government announced officially on Thursday that all cars must carry a single-use breathalyzer kit from July 1st 2012.

Thanks, Elliemay - just to reiterate, although this is now law, it will not be fully enforced until November, when police will start levying fines for now carrying the necessary kits.

Note, also, that if you carry the single use type of kit, you need to have at least two kits in the car. in order that their will always be one available after one has been used.

Hi,
Just found this official site in French.

Seems that it is to encourage self testing before driving. Read on another site that if stopped by the Gendarme for suspected drink driving, you will need to be carrying at least one unused breathalyzer kit that is in date, but they will not use your kit to test you.

Seems that you can also use digital breathalyzer kits that can be reused.

Over to you folks, any further information gratefully received. Thumbs Up

These kits are available online, however before ordering, ensure that they conform to the French requirements. Some on sale do not.

Thanks for the info...we are going to France in September. Apparently you can buy the kits from the caravan and camping club...2 kits for £4.99.

Basically you should only ever need the one kit and that should never have to be used.

Remember one drink while driving is one drink to many...Wink

Hopefully that's so Bruce, but if you are in an accident that's not your fault and you are breathalised as a matter of course, even though you haven't been drinking, then you will need the second one to comply with the law for the rest of your journey.

Hi,
You won't as I have read that the police do not use the breathalyzer that you are carrying, but use their own.

Thanks for that Elliemay...so why do you have to carry one in the first place? Am I being stupid?

Hi,
No you're not being stupid. Methinks the law is stupid!!! The law was bought in as there were many incidents of DUI amongst the French, so they decided that they should self test before driving. That's why they always have to have at least one unused breathalyzer kit in the car at any time.

Oh I see!!! So if you don't drink and drive you only need one. I thought you had to have one as the French police didn't!!! DUH!!
