We always spend a night or two in Corfu Town on our way to Paxos each year, but it doesn't really give us time to do much apart from mooch around the Old Town and enjoy the bars and cafes on the Liston and in the squares, so this year we decided to stay there for five nights and finally get around to a couple of things that had been on our must-do list for years!

First on the list was a trip to Vidos island. It's only a short boat ride away from Town, but it's a real escape! We were somewhat disturbed to find that on the far side of the island there are sea lions, which are kept in what looks like a very small netted enclosure and come out onto a platform to be fed when a trip boat approaches it. However, apart from that we spent a lovely few hours exploring the island, sitting on one of the beaches and enjoying the views of the Town from the taverna.   At the time we were there, the taverna was only open during the daytime, but it must be lovely to see all the lights of Town when it's open in the evenings later in the season. A couple of daytime views -

Our second must-do was a visit to Mon Repos. The grounds of the palace are much bigger than we expected and there are lots of lovely woodland walks through them. We were quite surprised to suddenly come across a little riding school for the disabled, which had several ponies and what looked like an unofficial cat sanctuary!

It started to rain whilst we were there, but it was only a light shower, so it didn't spoil our enjoyment and it made for a lovely romantic photo of this couple walking along the jetty

Another of our visits was to the Achilleon palace. We'd been there during an Easter trip a few years ago, but the weather hadn't been kind to us, so it was good to see it in the sunshine and be able to look around the gardens and grounds this time.

We also spotted these cute little chaps in the rafters of the shop just outside the entrance!

The new "In Place" in Corfu Town seems to be the brand new Azur bar at the NAOK marina, just to the south of the Old Fortress. It was absolutely packed out in the evenings and in the daytime the new sunbeds, brollies and showers made the beach and jetty a popular swimming spot and playground for the local kids

A few more general photos of our visit -

We had a lovely 5 days and I can certainly recommend a few nights in Town as a complete contrast to the rest of our holiday, vegging out on the beach!
I wasn't lost - I was just taking an interesting detour!

We really enjoyed our day trip to Corfu Town a few years ago c/o COSMIC cruises in Kassiopi, we also did an organised round the Island day trip with Thomsons on our very first visit to Corfu 10 years ago. Lovely photos Elaine x

I love the town as well. The organised trips are a rip-off - what they call 'night-time shopping' usually means packing up and leaving well before sunset. But catching the bus late in the morning and sharing a taxi back to a resort nearer midnight is a great way to see the town, particularly on a Friday or Saturday.

Some other odd things to look out for are the charming giant Playmobil figure outside the toy shop on the main road across town; the spiral stairs at the rear of the garden to the right of the British palace; the ancient temple-styled church and the cannons in the free bit round to the right of the old fortress (those you can see from the marina) and the En Plo restaurant at the end of the dock down the ramps behind the palace is a fine place to have apple pie and ice cream and watch the boats go in and out.

Also beware when looking for the entrance to the 'new' (by which they mean 'Venetian') fortress, as parts of it are still used as a Naval barracks and the lower road entrance is secured by armed guards!
