Friends of mine have holidayed there a few times, they don't come on here, or anywhere else on the internet come to that.
So knowing them, they like traditional Greece, uncommercialised. that's how I imagine Finikounda to be. I don't think I've seen the resort mentioned here before. Be interesting to see any proper comments. Bob. |

I have never stayed there, just spent a day exploring and yes it is very Greek and fairly quiet. Sandy beach and a small harbour. Great place to explore other parts of the area from
However I have a friend who goes every year. She stays at the Finikounda Hotel B & B and loves it. It is in the centre of the village and close to the beaches |

Hi.
Thank you for the information. We have been looking at it for a couple of years now and really fancy it as it sounds traditionally Greek. A friend of mine has been to Stoupa a few times which she said is nice but is more commercialised than Finikounda. Hopefully more posts with information will come up... |

Hi Bob & Wendy
Yes it would be interesting to get some more information off someone who has actually holidayed in Finikounda. It sounds very Greek and uncommercialised which is what we looking for. Cheers |

Yes Fini is very laid back, nice tavernas on the beach, hens walking on road around park near church. We have not been for a few years and then there was no loungers etc, on beach. There is town beach which is very nice also long quieter beach over the hill, you could have the miles to yourself. Nice walk into hills and also flat walking area behind village. We stayed at Finikounda Hotel which is basic but very clean and nice people. I have looked at going back but to stay at Finissia Hotel which is on road across from beach, but really both would be fine. I can see the hog on spit at one end of tavernas and at other end usually lamb on spit lol. Just now Halki has me hooked so will have to wait till Halki bug stops biting. Finikounda is very quiet. Manos (Thomas Cook) do the properties mentioned.

Hi Aegina43
Thanks for that information, I'm liking it even more now. But interestingly I have looked at Halki, we just love Greece. Have you been to Halki what did you think? Cheers |

I have been to Halki for the last seven years and going again in May. Halki is VERY quiet only the one village hardly any cars .. well maybe see about 10 in two weeks as very little roads, no scooter or car hire etc. It is so laid back the most noise on balcony during day is the doves. Only noise in the morning is gentle putt putt of small fishing boats at end of town where we stay just now, left from harbour looking from the sea. Small bakery, fresh bread in morning. About 8-10 tavernas for food and all good. Three small beaches, yes very laid back, no big apartment blocks only one small hotel on outskirts but hardly used by tourists, as far as I can see most stay in studios or apartments converted from villas scattered through the town. Most excitement is watching big ferry come in when sitting with a cold Mythos lol. It's another world, so quiet nothing really to go and see except castle on a cool day and monastery but really its a chill out place.

Halki is very laid back I agree but it has an odd atmosphere out of Greek school holidays because there are no children. The mothers generally go to Rhodes with the children during term time as Halki has no school so there are very few young Greek women too
That said I love Halki. It is beautiful and there are very few new buildings just renovated old ones One big difference to Finikounda is that Halki is very hilly and Finikounda is flat Beaches at Halki are not on your doorstep, you have to walk to get to them although you can swim in the large harbour but mind the sea urchins if you do, I got them on my legs climbing down the metal ladder into the water!! Most visitors to Halki seem to be British. We stayed fairly high up in the village which meant a hike down and up again for the shops, baker and tavernas but was easier for the beach. There is a water shortage in Halki, all of it is shipped in, so sometimes it goes off but there are taps round the village from storage tanks. A lot of accommodation has storage tanks too Halki is quirky, there are long standing feuds between various families although some of them have resolved in recent years The island relies on tourism as there is no farming. The inland areas are populated by goats |

The school on Halki is on the road to Pondomas beach. Last year on our visit they had the children put on a dance show down in harbour for the tourists, on previous years they have also put on a show in the school. It always amazes me hearing the children playing till late into the night down at harbour and no one falls in.
Yes Halki very hilly and a walk to the three main beaches but only takes about 20 minutes to them, well Kania nearer 35 minutes, we always take walking poles but at about 70 its not to hard a walk. At present as far as I know they are building a desalination plant this I hear could be operational this year. Out of our seven previous visits only two of them run out of water, one of those times the water tanker (the Daphne) went on fire in harbour.

Hi Aegina43
It sounds a lovely place. We love Greece & been to a lot of the Islands but the last few years been stuck on a resort in Corfu, very friendly, lovely Tavernas, fell in love with place and have been going twice a year but would be nice to continue once a year and try another place for our second holiday. When do the ferries stop to Halki? |

I would say mid October be the last of holiday time as tavernas will not all stay open but ferry would run all year I would expect. Easiest way to go first time is probably with Olympic or Nissia, we have always used Olympic. We like you love Greece and go there every May and September, last year September was Liapades this year will be Paleocastritsa for three weeks. Its OK Susie I just scratched my head wondering how you missed the school and the young kids. lol They are funny.
