Hi,
For any of you that are interested in local festivals in Corfu whilst you are on your holidays.

The next one seems to be the Festival of Elias the Prophet in Magoulades, which although it says 20th July, I believe that this is a two day festival on the 19th and 20th July.


May not cover all festivals so if anyone knows of any others please post the details.

That's a great and very useful Link Elliemay. Thanks. There are three taking place while I'm on Corfu in September. I hope to get to see at least one of them.

There may be a 'typo' on the 24th September where it says "Vato" when I think it should say "Vatos" (Ropa Valley?). That's the one I've pencilled in so I will have to report back.

Hi,
Don't think it's a typo as the Greeks often drop the last "s" in a word. I can't remember the reason that they do this, but it was explained to me in the dim an distant past. The festival I mentioned is shown as Elia the prophet, when it is really Elias. Also, Arillas is referred to as Arilla and so it goes on. No wonder I am having difficulty learning Greek. Wacko

You drop the 's' when you are talking to someone and leave it in when you are talking about someone.

Most festivals run over two days as they start with ther church service the evening before the Saint's Day they are celebrating, and people use this as a chance to start the festivities (make money also!)
 
Benitses just had its annual very successful Agia Marina- running on both 16th and 17 July- lots of excellent Greek dancing in costume, by adults and children, brilliant bouzouki playing and lovely lambs on the spit, souvlaki, Corfu beer, and lououmades and that delicious caramelly halva.  Pity we have to wait another year to enjoy it all again!

Hi,
I believe that there is a festival in Kassiopi on the 15th of August (Asssumption of the Virgin Mary) which is an important day all over Greece and anyone called Maria or Marios celebrates their name day on this day.

Shame I missed the Benitses one, usually there this time of year, always look forward to the festival. But on the upside hopefully will be there in September.

We also will be in Benitses in September so will unfortunately miss the festival, but have been to the one down in Marathia a few times, and that is worth a visit. It isn't a busy festival, but loads of Greek Dancing, Lambs on the spit and live music too. A real Greek experience where you can normally see the locals thoroughly enjoying themselves.

I was at Kalami is September 2004, and I think it was a new festival idea (probably to give us holydaymakers a treat) and was called The Festival of the sea. A small flotilla of boats came round various bays on the North East coastline over two or three evenings and treated us to a show of lights and music. Been ever hopeful since of the same happening again, but never saw it again, even when I have been in September like this year. Ah well, ever hopefull!

Depending when you are there in September you may just be lucky and catch the Sardine Festival in Benitses on 14th September.

Here are some of the Festivals in Corfu.
 
 

21st May

Local holiday commemorating Union with Greece. Processions are held in Corfu Town.
28th May Ascension Day. Festival in Kato Korakiana near Dassia.
7th June Pentecost. Festivals in Lakones and Kastellani Mesis.
8th June Whit Monday. Festivals in Kontokali, Argirades, Kastellani Mesis.
24th June Agios loannis Day (St. John). 2 day festival in village of Agios loannis (Approx. 8 km to the north of Corfu Town heading for Paleocastritsa).
11th/12th June Formula 1 World Champsionship Power Boat races in Corfu Town (Garitsa Bay).
8th July Agios Prokopios Day. Festivals in Agios Prokopios village and at the church of the saint in Lefkimi.
6th August Festivals in Palaiohori. Perivoli, Agios Matheos, Agii Deka and Mount Pantocrator
10th August Varkarola - concert of traditional Corfiot cantades presented from boats moored in Garitsa Bay, Corfu Town.
11th August Dedicated to patron saint of island - Saint Spiridon. Procession in Corfu Town starting at 9 am. Festival also in Kastellani.
15th August Assumption of Virgin. National Holiday. Festivals in Avliotes Spartillas, Vatos, Skripero. Kinopiastes, Viros, Lefkimmi and Kassiopi
14th September Festival in Sidari at the monastery of Agios loannis.
26th October Saint Dimitrios' Day. Festival at Ano PavIiana.
28th October

Ochi Day. National holiday commemorating Greek refusal to allow Italian invasion in 1940. Procession in Corfu Town.

We actually fly home on the 14 September Cry but not till about 23:30 so may be able to see some of the celebrations if they are in the early evening. I always thought the sardine festival in Benitses was during the summer.

Just to say Elliemay that not all Marias celebrate their name days in August- there are other St Mary's Days (presumably the Magdalene) but yes, most do then
