This forum seems to have died a death since we moved over here, so I thought I'd try giving it the kiss of life with a few photos taken on our recent holiday to Elounda.

The first 3 are views of the bay and harbour at Elounda

These are views of the former leper island, Spinalonga

We really enjoyed our holiday and so if anyone is thinking of going to Elounda next year and has any questions, I'd be only too happy to try and supply answers
I wasn't lost - I was just taking an interesting detour!

Lovely photos ElaineK. Been to Crete a few times & Brother-in-law has just returned from Elounda. Very pretty place!
I quite fancy a trip to Chania, at some point.. we will see..
Keep calm and think of Corfu!

Did you get anything to eat at the Canal Bar at the far end?  It looks a right tip, but they serve up some great food.

Probably a bit cold to go swimming, but there are some interesting sunken ruins around there.  I think it was a September when I last went to Crete; they'd just started to turn the water heaters on in the hotel, which was causing things to explode in the night!

Elounda was much nicer than Ag. Nik., but any sort of bus or coach trip on Crete took all day to travel.

Do you mean the one near the windmills Joe? We went for a walk along there one morning and stopped for a drink, but it was too early to eat. I would describe it more as quirky than a tip and took lots of photos of their unusual "decorations", but this one's my favourite of an old gramophone and speaker on a windowsill.

The hotel pool was absolutely freezing and we didn't manage more than a quick dip in it, but the sea was still quite warm and we had quite a few swims off the beach in front of the hotel.

We found the sea warm too, did not use the pool at all

The area round the windmills is facinating

There is an almost complete mosaic which has been uncovered and if you sit on the scrappy bit of beach you do not even have to stand up to discover things

Within hand reach we picked up about 6 frgaments of ancient clay oil lamps, with their handles.

The beach seemed to me made up mostly of bits bits of shattered ancient pots

First holiday we ever had was to Elounda, you can tell how long ago as there was no beach, it was man made years after. Not been in October but have been end of March as it was Easter that year, must say I would imagine it to be still warm as its so far south, in March we never needed coats etc at all.

If that's on the causeway leading out to the peninsula then yes - though they may have done some work on it since I was there.  If you go round behind it there's a huge exposed mosaic.  But it's round the back that you might still see lean-to bits of corrugated iron making up the back of the bar!

I had my dinner there and a few drinks, while the owner was tying fishhooks onto a lay line to leave across the canal overnight.

If you look down into the sea from by the chapel there, you can see the tops of the Roman harbour walls just below the surface.  You can get in to the sea from the rocks further round and come back.  In the shallow water you can see more walls, foundations and parts of a road - the whole area subsided, taking the edge of the original Roman town down into the sea with it.

Just booked a cheeky week in Elounda in October after 2 Weeks in Lesvos, nice island by the way. Did Spinalonga when we stayed in Sissi but not been to Elounda before. Will definatley try the quirky canal bar, we like quirky. Looking forward to visiting Agios Nikolaos again. October won't keep me out of the pool or the sea .

Im sure it will be lovely Susie. Warms nice, cool wakes up the senses .
Unusual for us to have two trips away so close together and was a bit sceptical, but a bit of a Birthday treat and must say I'm looking forward to it now! Four week's today we will be there .

Elounda was nice, weather was in the 30s few days. Started to change as we came back, enjoyed the bay but must admit I prefer the open sea. Enjoyed what Elounda had to offer but think I still prefer the other side of the island. Hired a car for a few days and drove over to see George at the Pink Flamingo in Sissi, he was really pleased to see us even though it was 6 years since we'd seen him. Never had a bad meal but hey this is Greece after all, nice traditional restaurant left of Manos apartments. Would go back sometime if only for the Barman Hercules, he was first class, actually gave us an answer in the pub quiz to help us win!. Found the undersea walls and the mosaic couldn't find the canal bar though. Brilliant fish restaurant there though, Khanali, I think highly recommend!!! Hoping to go back to Mike's Malame next year, the only place been to twice, have a feeling might be out voted!!

Glad you enjoyed your holiday Mick. We also stayed at Manos when we were there 3 years ago and it's good to hear that Hercules is still there - he was an absolute star! We had many a late night drink and chat with him when returning from our evenings out

Thank you Elaine. Must admit feel a little silly can see from your photo's the tables and chairs from the Khanali fish restaurant through the window of the Canal bar, can't believe we couldn't find it!! Never mind will have to go back to see another time and see Hercule's again, he is a really nice and genuine guy one of the best two I've met the other being Manos at Mikes in Malame.
