For those of you who may be in Corfu Town at some stage during your holiday and in need of an escape from the heat coupled with a touch of culture, I can highly recommend the exhibition of Edward Lear paintings/drawings covering much of the Ionion that we know and love.
Although the works of art date from the 1850's, it is amazing how many of the views and locations are still recognisable.
The exhibition runs until 21st August in the Palace of St Michael and St George, next to the archway as you drive from the Liston towards the Old Port (and Pizza Pete's

Please note the museum is closed Monday's.
I took a trip to Corfu Town on Monday 11th of June, my last day of holiday, especially to see the exhibition and it said closed Mondays! I still enjoyed my day in town and did a bit of shopping with my daughter, luckily I am back in Corfu for 3 weeks this time over the summer holidays, I will go back then.
I love the drawing of Paleokatrista in Prosperros Cell, I have a photograph I took in 2008 before I even bought the book, and couldn't believe it was exactly the same. I use it as a bookmark when in Corfu and show everyone I meet (or bore as my other half says) sad person I am!!

Very worthy of a visit. Only 3 euros to get in or 2 euros if you're a pensioner. There is a wonderful catalogue of the paintings available for 15 euros. Worth every penny. Open until 3.30pm

Thanks for the reminder Martyn! I saw this advertised a while ago and as we're in Town this weekend we may well pop in there on Sunday.

Didn't get to see the exhibition, but saw a wedding reception in the grounds of the museum last Saturday evening.
Simply stunning location, with paper lanterns dotted around the gardens and the pathway leading from the Spianada. |

We DID go on Sunday and as Martyn said it was a very interesting way to spend an hour or two out of Corfu Town's blasting heat. Lovely to see how things looked in Lear's day, but what amazed me the most was seeing a picture of a spiral staircase down to the beach behind the museum - the same sprial staircase that I'd just taken photo of before we went inside. They certainly made things to last in those days!
