Hello,

Moved to General holiday questions. Thank you for your replies, I don't know how my post got in here but I must have done it and not realised. It should have been in General Holiday Questions.

Hi

Yes, I do drink the local water (although not that which comes directly from our sterna - but that's another story!).  The water can be high in minerals, but then, it does depend upon the area you are in and the source of the water.

It is said that the high mineral content can result in upset stomachs, although I haven't had a problem (yet).

There is another saying locally - that once you have taken a drink of the local water in Corfu, you will be hooked on the island for life.  So, that explains it, thenWink.

Hi,
We use the tap water for brushing teeth and cooking, however, use a jug filter before using it in the kettle, due to the high mineral content.
Have heard suggestions that the high mineral content can cause kidney stones, but don't know if that is just another urban myth. Confused

Also agree with Martyn that it depends where you are on the island and where you water source comes from as many people tell me that they have very hard water, we don't. It takes me ages to rinse out shampoo if I use as much as I use in the UK.

I remember one year having problems with brown tap water.  Something was mentioned about the owner of the apartments not paying for the good stuff?
Don't know if that was true, but we've never had a problem any other time.  I use it for cleaning my teeth and cooking, etc, but prefer bottled to drink because you can chill it.

Hi,
I think that you will find that the brown water occurs when there has been a break in the water supply. Does here anyway! Smile

We were told the owner hadn' t paid his bill, and had to use the stored water, which I think is called the Sturna or similar.

Hi,
We don't have a sterna, and nearly always get brown water through initially when the we have no water for a while.
In fact, I always run the water for a second before filling the water filter, just in case there was a break in the supply which I wasn't aware of. Wink

We always use the tap water. We have a slim Brita filta which fits in the fridge door for cold drinking water. No problems in ten years +.

As previously stated, water quality depends on where the water is sourced, ours, above Acharavi is supplied from bore holes and pumped up to the villages, much of the pipework is above ground so in the summer arrives as hot water (so no need to turn the water heater on very often, and of course no watering the garden until evening and the water has cooled)
We have always drunk the water from the tap, filling old water bottles from the tap and keeping refridgerated meets our needs. When we arrived with our 6 month old first grandaughter some years ago, our Greek neighbours insisted that the water from the tap could be used directly for her bottles etc; we have used it ever since quite safely.
True, we do sometimes get brown water when the main has been opened for repairs or a new supply has been provided for a customer, in which case we wait a while to let the water clear.
Our only frustration is when the electricity supply fails to the pump at the bottom of the hill in which case we are sometimes without water for a few days.
None of the houses in our hamlet have a sterna for some reason. One new house was built with one, but has since turned it into a store room.
Bob.
