Hi all, just wondering if there is anywhere around that sells disposable barbecues, last night we were talking about our visit next year and thought it might be nice to spend an evening on the beech with a bottle of wine and a few bits and pieces for the barbecue, but we couldn't remember if we had seen them being sold anywhere before, that might be because we have never actually looked for them before or maybe they are not sold because of the obvious risk of fires.

You can build your own with a few large stones in a scooped out hollow in the sand, shove some charcoal or any dry wood on top and voila!!! Cook everything on tin foil
I always think the tavernas who cook on wood rather than charcoal produce far better tasting food!! As to fire risk, so long as you are out in the open on a beach you are safe andou can easily put out a BBQ with sand. Next day you go back with a carrier bag and clean up any burnt bits. |

I'm pretty sure you are not allowed to light BBQs on beaches.

Many people do- as long as you are careful, there is no wind, and you soak the charcoal afterwards and remove all the litter from it- should not be a problem.

I don't know about the legalities, but be very, very careful as any trees and leaf litter are so dry they can go up like tinder. And never leave anything behind - put it out with sand, douse it with seawater and wait till it's cool enough to pick up and take home when you've finished.

There is a taverna on the beach front in Agios Gordios that has a large board outside saying that their pizzas are cooked in a wooden oven. Why does it not catch fire?

Thanks for all your replies, looks like it can be done so long as you are sensible about it and considerate to others, which we always try to be anyway, so shouldn't be any problems. Just can't wait to get out there now, only 338 days to go.
Thanks again.

The 'English' signs are always a good source of amusement. I assume in that case it's someone trying to describe a wood-fired oven..? The Belvedere in Paleo does have a new brick dome pizza oven in the spare room at the back of the resturant, but more interestingly, they also serve 'FRESHLY SQUIZZ' orange juice at the bar. And various menus around the island seem to stumble over the translation of 'pot', serving up their oven dishes in either a 'jug' or a 'kettle'.
Though heaviest irony must be the café on Zakynthos that has copied the phrase 'fast food' in various sizes of lettering all over the front and inside of the premises. So when one asks for a burger, they spring into action, putting a raw burger on the grill and stepping out for a fag... |
