Does anyone know if work has begun on the redevelopment of The Oceanis, or is it still in ruins?

I loved the views from the rooms and the pool area.Smile

I have happy memories of the Oceanis. Had my honeymoon there in 1976. Let’s hope the new owners give it the care and attention it requires.

I’m not completely useless, I can be used as a bad example.

Oceanis closed with no sign of opening anytime soon.

The tale that I heard was that the new, wealthy owner wanted to rebuild luxury holiday apartments on the site, but was blocked from expanding on what's already there, and has ever since been trying to sell the site on.  As bits of concrete cladding drop off the terrace, the gates have been knocked in by a reversing coach, and the 'jungle' reclaims a little bit more of it every year.  I couldn't believe how overgrown it looked in just the first summer after it closed.  I think 2006 was the last year it was open?

There's another abandoned place between the beaches below Belvedere and Horizons.  No idea who's responsible.  Looks like someone tried to build a beach bar and never finished it.  The sea has since stoved in part of the retaining wall and exposed the dodgy hollow foundations inside, and parts of the concrete deck crack and sag.  Presumably only a matter of time before more of it collapses.

Mind you, there's a two-storey shopping arcade I know of in Laganas on Zakynthos that has even more alarming cracks visible from below, and slants to the upper floors, and that's still in use every day!

So long as they were tastefully done, I wouldn't see what the problem would be in redeveloping the Oceanis site. It would surely be better compared to what we have at the moment, and of course bring in some much needed revenue into the area.

That sounds like too much wishful thinking!

The site has quite a large driveway entrance and the Oceanis is only a few (three?) floors high.  To build apartments right up to the road and higher than the original hotel would definitely spoil the area, particularly for the apartments already on the inland side of that headland.

It would be nice if the Oceanis could be a hotel again, I must admit I miss the East European karaoke nights, The green green grass of home will never quite sound the same somehow.
