A friend of mine is going to have the 2nd week of her honeymoon in Paleo (1st in Paxos) and asked me for info but it's over 10 years since I was there (I know...sorry!) Wonder if you can help?
Are Neried, Nausica and Spiros restaurants still around and good choices? Any others that are a 'must do'?
I see the Moody Blue has closed, is Mistral still open? What other bars are there?
Does anyone know what Christos and Stathis from Moody Blue are doing this summer?
They're staying at the Tango studios/apartments - the only map I've found seems to show it as just before the Hotel Paleo...is that right?

Many thanks, hopefully it won't be too long before I get back for a visit too.

Annie

If Spiros' and his Nagasaki Saganaki aren't there I'm going to be very disappointed.  Have to bring my own hot sauce then.  I heard the Oasis, next to it, closed.

Nereids and Nausicaa aren't going anywhere.  Moody Blue is now a grill-house, run by the guy who used to have the one down near the Oceanic hotel.  His old place has been taken over by The Greek Way.  And the supermarket there has moved down to the harbour corner and grown a lot bigger.
I think Mistral was sold on last year - don't know if the name has changed.

I like the sound of the hot saganaki! Will pass that on, do they still have the '20,000 leagues under the sea' ceiling decor??
Many thanks for your replies.

The Oasis is closed but Spiros and Georgia have opened a new restaurant on the spot of the old Paleo Disco (where the road splits and goes up to Lakones). They weren't sure what they were going to call it, but it should be open now. Probably well worth a visit. About a further 5/10 minutes walk past the Oasis.

The Tango bar and apartments are on the bend almost opposite the Akrotiri beach Hotel if I remember correctly.
I'm a peripheral visionary.

Can't believe Paleo Disco has closed (I am definitely living in the past!), can remember many a happy night dancing to outdated rock music c/o Spiros the DJ.
Thanks again for all the info.

Seems strange to me that they'd close one place and open another even further out.
The "Spiros Special Saganaki" makes me laugh ordering it, as if you ask for the hot or the house special saganaki or something not quite right, the waitress repeats it back exactly as it says on the menu to check.  It made me think of that bit in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, where Ragetti (Mackenzie Crook) says "You didn't say it right!  You 'ave to say it right..."

Spiros and Georgia are pretty astute business people. I was a bit surprised too, but I think they hope to rely on a loyal returning customer base as well as some passing traffic. They built up a great reputation at the Oasis, and the Acapulco consistently has people going back because of the atmosphere and hospitality they generate.
I shall look forward to a night in their new restaurant at some time. Had some brilliant nights in the Oasis and many an unforgettable time at the Acapulco!
Big smile

Hi Annie

Tell your friends about Faros Pool Bar, especially on Saturday evening when they do the BBQ.

It’s opposite the old Oceanis hotel, (now closed down).

Mike

I’m not completely useless, I can be used as a bad example.

More moveable feasts...

The Greek Way has gone back where it was, up the steps.  I think Nikos got bored doing nothing but gyros all day.  There's a new grill place next to the supermarket called 'i Stamna'.  Looks like they've built a nice veranda on the front there, though that may have been last year.  See if they have 'the stamina'... LOL

I'd also not heard of the aquarium before; it's a wooden building down near the watersports pontoon.  Bigger than it looks, there's a nice collection of local fish and huge spider crabs, slipper lobsters etc, and a terrarium on the back with lizards and huge snakes from around the world.  The friendlier ones even get let out occasionally to climb over the visitors...

At the moment the watersports aren't open, the right-half beach canoe guy isn't there and the buses are still on the short timetable (last one back at 4).  I'm told this changes next week to the full timetable.

Had a lovely time in Paleo-24th May for 2 weeks. During the first week the weather was a bit mixed and it took a while in the morning for it to be lie out weather- although me and my friend didn't care and were there at the back of nine!!! The sea was initially cold to the point of thinking someone was stabbing you with needles but by the 2nd week it was glorious Thumbs Up I stayed at the Odysseus as usual- check out their new website www.odysseushotel.gr which gives lovely pictures and info on the usual rooms and the superior ones. Spent alot of time at the Belvedere pool and bar where we all met up and giggled throughout the fortnight.
I found that during the day the resort continued to be fairly busy and there were people about at night too although it was quiet. The Paleocastritsa Hotel appears to be doing all inclusive now and with British people staying there-don't get me started on all inclusive!!! but what I did notice was that there were more British people going about during the day (spotted by the wrist band) which can only be a good thing.
This break I did very little- I lazed about but did have a trip into town to see friends. The Liston was so quiet but maybe it was just our timing. This holiday was on a severe budget and I made it work as I did not find that prices had increased very much. The key is to watch where you eat, drink etc. Some places had a euro or so on the dishes in the taverna but the cost of drinks appears to have stayed much the same. I also made sure I took all toiletries with me as they continue to be so expensive in Corfu. I did have a crisis when my well planned suntan oil burst and I had to purchase more (refused to pay 25 euros for certain well known brands) and managed to get a cheaper version which did the trick. Make sure you budget in for taxi fares- the airport to Paleo is around 45 euros. If you are taking excursions by taxi it could get pricey. The bus was running as usual and provides a good service- 2.40 euros into town.
No mossie bites thanks to Avon So Soft and May is a delight with all the flowers and no wasps!!! Planning my September trip and counting down already.
I can close my eyes and see Paleo but it's not the same.........Roll on my next trip.

I cannot share your enthusiasm for those things (Im okay with lizards, it's the other things I can't look at) and I was hoping the terrarium was a one season wonder.  Visited Paleocastritsa last year and had to leave.  Obviously I didn't go in the place but there were posters all round resort with photos of those things.
I Know I'm a minority and I expect it attracts more people than it puts off.

Didn't see any posters this year - came as a bit of a surprise when I did find it.
I have a friend who can't stand dogs either which I will never understand.  Yappy snappy ones, maybe, but big soft dopey ones?  A shame.  Their Asiatic Rock Python is lovely and friendly.  Well, really he just treats people like trees - something to hang off.  Having said that, I have a friend who has a dried rattlesnake tail; all he has to do is shake that and I mess myself.

Taking the boat trip from Sidari to Paleo tomorrow-can't wait!
We stayed ovenight last weekend, but looking forward to arrive by boat instead of car.

We plan on eating lunch at the Greek Way, since Nicos has returned and has opened up the top level too.
So we can eat lunch outside what used to be our room when the building was Paleo Studios many years ago, and enjoy the simply wonderful view from the terrace, the very one we sunbathed on all those years ago!Smile
