I always think it's a shame that this part of the forum has so little activity - Corfu Town is a World Heritage site after all! We love the faded grandeur of the architecture and mooching around its many gardens and alleyways and we always spend at least a couple of nights there on our way to Paxos each year. Here are some photos of a few of the Town's many attractions -

The Old Fortress

Boats in the Harbour

Palace of St Michael & St George

Spiral Stairway - this is just behind the Palace and presumably was built to give the British High Commissioner a private swimming area off the rocks below in the days when the Palace was his residence

Alleyways in the Old Town

Clocktower & Belfry of Ag Spiridon Church
I wasn't lost - I was just taking an interesting detour!

I would actually prefer to base myself in Corfu Town and bus out than be in a purpose built resort, it is magical in the evening- except for July and August when it is so hot, so then I would stay somewhere like Petriti...and chill!

Yes, I love being in Town in the evenings - pre-dinner drinks on the Liston or in the Town Hall square, followed by a meal at any one of the huge choice of wonderful restaurants - things that can't really be fully appreciated by just taking the odd daytrip there - but I don't think I'd fancy spending two weeks in Town if my primary aim was going for a relaxing sun-and-sand-type holiday. What puzzles me though are all the people who regularly go to Corfu for that sort of holiday, but who also like to have the occasional city break in between and to whom it would never occur that Corfu Town offers a fantastic location for such a break - either as a separate long weekend or even for a few nights tagged on to the beginning or end of their beach holiday.

Edit to add: Maybe I should offer my services to the Corfu Tourist Board if there is such a thing!

I find it hard to post photos on the forum as my image size normally exceeds that which the forum can handle. The forum size limit is 100kb which is not very big.

Great photos Westekker - we've spent many a happy hour watching the boats pass by and gazing over to Vidos in that bar down on the little peninsula that you can see from the top of the fort!

Incidentally, I always use the picture hosting site Tinypic.com to post photos on here. You can upload photos of any file size on there and copy and paste the hotlink in here. You don't have to be a member, you can just use the site for one-offs, but if you register it automatically saves the photos to your account and then you can access the links again if you need to.

Great photos both. We always moor in that little inlet when we visit for the day, lovely to see, brings back memories!

Maybe you need a little more help to identify the location. I visited here many times, a unique location with a rather eccentric owner Spyros.

We stay in a hotel 5 minutes walk from the town - the hotel is an oasis with a lovely pool area and we have a walk down a tree lined road (dodging the traffic - never can quite get the hang of zebra crossings and traffic lights in Corfu) into the new town and then down through the old town to walk breakfast off. You can easily get a bus to other areas on the island if you wish, but nothing beats Corfu Town in the evening. It is a wonderful place and you are right - its a great city break as well in the cooler weather.

Got back yesterday from Arillas and San Stephanos, spent the last day and night in Corfu Town and what a good idea!
We usually only visit for a day or an evening boat trip, but what a difference to actually stay there.
I booked a lovely "elegant room" (as described by the host Renee, on the Airbb website) in her house overlooking the windmill at Anemomylos bay.
What a lovely place to swim from with the locals, there are steps down to the water, great eating places and 5 minute walk to Mon Repos and other Archeological sites and churches...oh and a monastry. Even had cocktails in the evening on the rooftop terrace of Cavalieri Hotel listening to a Brass Band down below.
I would definitely go on a weekend break there, or as Jan said, stay and bus out to other resorts if you want a beach day out.
