Well it's that time of year again when I post what's becoming my annual report and photos of our pre-Paxos visit to Corfu Town! We only had 3 nights and 2 full days there this year, so we didn't get around quite as much as last year, but we didn't do too badly - or so my feet were telling me by the time we got to Paxos

Day 1

As usual, we stayed in the Bella Venezia Hotel and enjoyed a good breakfast in the beautiful garden before venturing out on our expeditions!

In all our years of staying in Corfu Town we'd never visited the New Fortress, so we decided that we were long overdue! On the way there, we passed this statue, which we must have passed many times before, but never stopped to look at

The New Fortress was originally built by the Venetians in the 1500s, but was reconstructed and extended in the 1800s by the British when Corfu was a British Protectorate during the reign of Queen Victoria

The views from the top are well worth the climb

The day after we got home, we heard that there had been a big fire in the Fortress the night before. The fire service managed to get it under control very quickly with minimal damage, but I'm not sure whether the flag and the plants would have survived

I wasn't lost - I was just taking an interesting detour!

Day 2

Our first visit to Mon Repos last year was on a very wet and grey day, so we decided to have another look in the sunshine. It's quite a long walk around Garitsa Bay, so we mostly kept to the relative shade of the cycle path

By the time we got to the windmill at the other end of the bay, we were more than ready for a cool drink in the café and I swear that the gull that was swimming around begging for food from the "gullible" (sorry!) tourists was the same one that was there last year!

We eventually arrived at Mon Repos and spent a couple of hours wandering the woodland paths

The house itself is possibly most famous for being the birthplace of the Duke of Edinburgh (supposedly on the kitchen table!) By the look of it, it hasn't seen too many paint pots or brushes since then, but has a lovely air of faded grandeur

I seem to recall seeing this view a couple of times during the last series of the Durrells

I wasn't lost - I was just taking an interesting detour!

Finally I just want to give a shout out to the restaurant that we ate in twice - Divino. It only opened last year and we didn't find it until our last night, but we were so impressed that we decided it was an absolute must for this year. It's located at the opposite end of Guilford Street from the Town Hall square, so as well as Bella Venezia, it's also really handy if you're staying at the Cavalieri or Corfu Palace. It's run by a lovely young Italian husband and wife team and the food is excellent - delicious and really well presented.
