Thinking of a two week holiday - Corfu and Cephalonia - but having trouble finding transport between the islands. Would fly from Scotland to Corfu and return. Any direct ferries or flights Help appreciated.

Hi Sara

There are no direct ferries, but you might find a direct flight with Olympic - I think they fly three times per week.

If you could take a hire car off the island of Corfu (some hirers will allow this for an extra charge) you could take the ferry to Igoumenitsa, drive down to Lefkas and then get another ferry from Vassiliki (south coast of Lefkas) to Fiscado

There used to be a fast cat a couple of times a week and the same for the hydrofoil. You could always get a flight with Olympic which used to go to Athens via Kefalonia twice a week and Agoudimos ferries used to go from Igoumenitsa to Kefalonia but all these services seem to have stopped so it looks like a flight to Athens and then another one back to Kefalonia.

I thought there might be problems when I started looking for ferries/flights. And it seemed such a good idea. I was initially worried about Greece this year, for the obvious reasons, but if we all did this they will never get out of the financial difficlties, and I reckon we will be very welcome visitors.

So next plan is where. Will definitely be Nissaki, but a weeks is enough. Will give Paxos a miss, to try somwhere else, and Lefkada or Kepahlonia seemed obvious choices, but too hard work and expensive to go from Ionian islands to Athens and back. Same with driving -
drive all the time at home so don't usually do hire care on holiday. Went to Parga one year and liked it (via Paxos and back by Bus and Igoumenitsa ferry.) Anywhere else down that coast worth visiting? Anyone with bright ideas for stage two would be very welcome. Just somewhere quiet but walking to tavernas, beach etc and pretty - not too busy or touristy. Thanks!

PS whatever has happened to the forum since I last visited?

Hi Sarah

You might consider Mourtos/Sivota on the mainland - just a short bus ride from Igoumenitsa.  Sadly, I don't have access to my photos at the moment, but there is a large bay, protected to the south by two small islands and to the north by the mainland hills - the bay opens up to the west, giving you some fantastic sunsets over Corfu!

Both the town quay and the small harbour are very popular with the yaching community (including me) so it is fairly busy.  There is an excellent choice of bars and restaurants along the harbour front and there are some goods shops.  I suppose it is a bit like Kassiopi, but bigger, more scenic and in many ways a bit more restrained.

Try an  internet search for Mourtos Sivota and you should find more detail.  I have to say, it is one of my favourite spots when we are sailing

Thanks for the info. There does not seem to be any ferry link Corfu to Kephalonia. Skyexpress planes are running at present 3 days a week at 50 euoros one way. Summer timetable should be out soon.

I have booked our flights Glasgow/Corfu, as they are already getting expensive. Accomodation should not be a problem, so we have a while to decide what to do. Like the look of Sivota, so that is a possibility.

I love planning holidays!!

Thanks for help, but think will save Kephalonia for a proper 2 week holiday.

Still looking into Sivota, or maybe just Paxos again. Decisions, decisions...

My daughter and her friend travelled from Kephalonia to Corfu last summer; ferry from Fiskardo to southern tip of Lefkas (runs 3-4 times/day, about 1 h), from there the local bus to Lefkas town, about 1 h (stay over night). Local bus from  Lefkas town to Preveza airport (about 1 h, frequent timetable), then local bus from Preveza airport to Parga (frequent timetable), about 1 h (stay over night in Parga). Next day boat to Paxos, then from Paxos to Corfu with the hydrofoil. Information and timetables can be found in "The Rough Guide to the Ionian Islands". The journey takes a couple of days but you will have the pleasure of seeing the Ionian islands on the way! The girls had no problem in finding hotel rooms on the day.

I have been investigating getting from Kefalonia to Corfu and back in April. I have been in touch with Sky Express and although they do not say as much, it is looking as if they will not fly this route in 2012.
It would be possible to go by ferry via Patras, but both directions involves overnight stops due to timings.
The other option is to go by ferry from Fiskardo (Kefalonia) to Vasiliki (Lefkada), drive to Igoumenitsa and ferry to Corfu.
I have been unable to find ferry times from Igoumenitsa to Corfu and return except Minoan Lines, but again, the times do not work.

Can anyone give me details of the times of any other ferry company that does this route in April?

Just to correct my earlier post.
It seems that Sky Express are flying Corfu to Kefalonia on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 10.00.
From Kefalonia to Corfu on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 22.00.
