Can anybody tell me if the cigarette prices are the same this year or have they gone up? I was paying €26 for JPS red last year.

The prices went up towards the end of last season but then the government agreed to reduce them again to help the islands (although shopkeepers now get less than 2% profit whereas last year they were getting over 5%)
We buy Assos which are 3 euros for 20 or 3.50 for 24. Thats well under half the equivelant price in the UK

Does anyone know have duty free allowances changed. Someone told me you can only bring back 400 cigs.
Family are going out to Greece soon and were told by a friend of theres that had just come back from Benidorm and were stopped for having 800cigs. They said to the customs person knowhere has this been mentioned.
Any ideas anyone thats been or knows the answere for them.

This is from HMRC's website today http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/customs/arriving/arrivingeu.htm

Arrivals from EU countries

When arriving into the UK from an EU country you can bring in an unlimited amount of most goods.

For excise goods such as alcohol and tobacco, there are no restrictions. However you must meet the conditions below:

  • You transport the goods yourself.
  • The goods are for your own use or as a gift. If the person you give the goods to pays you in any way - including reimbursing you for any expenses or payment in kind - then it's not a gift and the goods may be seized.
  • The goods are duty and tax paid in the EU country where they were acquired.

If you don't meet these conditions, the goods and any vehicle that transported them, may be seized.

Hi,
As has been previously stated, there is no limit to the amount of cigarettes that can be taken from Greece to the UK. As long as they are for personal use or solely as gifts.

These are the new Government guideline for duty free goods. Went to Portugal and Ibiza recently and the airport duty free shop only allowed me 4 cartons

The current (2012) duty and tax free allowances when travelling from another EU country to the UK are:
  • 800 cigarettes
  • 400 cigarillos
  • 200 cigars
  • 1 kg of smoking tobacco
  • 110 litres of beer
  • 10 litres of spirits
  • 90 litres of wine
  • 20 litres of fortified wine e.g. port or sherry.

Hi,
This seems to be a total contradiction to the post above by Sunny Jim. No wonder that we are all confused. Confused

OK, now even more confused.

Hi Elliemay, on your link it actually says 800 cigarettes from this year. I think you can take 3200 but would have to prove it is for sole use only if stopped

Hi,
I am still convinced that if they are for personal use there is no limit, as it says. It seems that they are trying to stop people smuggling for gain. They may question you, but as far as I know, the onus is for them to prove that they are NOT for personal consumption.

I dont smoke nor does the wife so weve never bothered bringing cigs back, even spirits are now just as cheap alongside wines in the supermarkets, so dont even bother looking at duty frees now.

The difference is with duty free and duty paid.  When you keep the two distinct there is no confusion.

Hi Dave,
Absolutely correct. Anything bought within the EU is duty paid within that country as there is no longer duty free within the EU.

If you buy goods in the EU they are not duty free. You have paid the duty in the country of origin. However, the British Government (as a result of having much higher duty on cigarettes and alcohol than most other European countries) found that there was an increase in the number of people bringing back large numbers of cigarettes etc and then selling them illegally. To combat this they introduced a "reasonable limit" which you can bring in without question, originally this was 3200 but it has now been decreased to 800. By law you can bring as many as you can carry for your own consumption, but if you exceed 800 you will probably be asked to account for it. If they are genuinely for your own consumption then you will have no problems explaining. Amusingly, one of the people caught importing for sale was trapped as they had rolling tobacco and were unable to roll cigarettes! Basically, if you bring more than 800, be prepared to explain that they are for your own consumption and you have bought them with your own money. Additionally, you would be wise to know how long they will last, based on how many you smoke a day! Hope this helps.
