Lots of folk we know have taken tobacco home no problem.

All major brands of ciggys are available here.
One exception is Amber leaf rolling tobacco which is not available here.

Before buying ciggys to take home why not try local Greek brands such as Assos, Rosey now smokes these and they are 10 euros a sleeve less than the Marlboro Lites she used to smoke.

I was over in May this year and took back 2000 although I had got confused about any possible new restrictions. I still read it as up to 3200 if you can show they are for your own use.

The advice given previously is absolutely correct. Within the EU (therefore between Greece and the UK), there are no restrictions at all in terms of how much tobacco you can bring across a border. The sign displayed in the shop at the airport telling you that your limit is 16 cartons of cigarettes has no legal authority whatsoever, and is in fact incorrect.

As has previously been written, the only rule is that what you bring back has to be for your use only. 'Use', in this case, means either that you will smoke them yourself, or give them away as gifts. If you bring them back and they change hands for any consideration at all (money, favours, trading them for goods or services) then you are breaking the law in this country. That is the only rule.

Taking it to an absurd extreme, you could quite legally bring back nothing but cartons of cigarettes in your enormous, 20kg suitcase, and in your hand baggage. The law says that would be alright, but only if they are for you to use, and nobody else.

Have a look at this link. Yes, it is Wikipedia, but I promise you that what is written in this section is true. The principles it describes are exactly the principles at play here. Goods within the EU can pass borders freely. That is the very point of the EU.

All best,

Sam.
Oh, why not. Just a small one.

Sorry, just to add something about the 16 cartons thing. Within the EU, customs officials obviously have quite a difficult time of it trying to determine whether any given passenger is bringing stuff across for themself (which is fine), or whether they are bringing something across to make money out of (which is not fine). This gave rise to the need for some sort of guideline that would enable customs officials to do their jobs consistently.

Out of this need arose a set of guidelines in the UK which teaches customs officials that 3,200 cigarettes is the threshold above which they will always suspect a passenger is likely to be in it for the money. This does not mean that you cannot bring back more than 3,200 cigarettes. You can. The law allows you to do so. What it does mean though, is that HMRC will undoubtedly want to have a word with you if they realise you are bringing more than 16 cartons in, and you will be required to put up a very persuasive argument.
Oh, why not. Just a small one.

Hi,
This is what I have been trying to say all along, before this new recommendation of 800, the old recommendation was 3,200. But it was ONLY a recommendation.
When I only holidayed once a year I used to take back a years supply of cigarettes and was never stopped.
I still believe that the onus is on the Customs officers to prove that they are not for personal consumption/gifts. Hey, are you going to give them away if you smoke?
Saying that in the twenty years or so that we have been coming to Greece, we have never been stopped at customs in the UK. Just walk through the green channel, no problems whatsoever. Smile

I bring back on average 2000 cigs each year and never had a problem.

I'll probably bring back closer to 3000 this time when I visit in August due to the exchange rate and the rediculous amount that we have to pay for cigs in the uk.

I get taxed enough in this country as it is so if I can legally save myself some money by bringing back 3000 cigarettes for my personal use then I'm going to.

The amount of money I save I offset against the overall cost of the holiday which with having to go during the school holidays, makes the cost more bareable.

I'm back in Corfu on the 25th of this month & I'll take home 8 cartons as I'll be back in Corfu in September & get stocked up on my winter supply, which will be around 30 cartons. Never had any problems with customs. I pay enough in taxes in the UK as it is

HOPE THIS HELPS FROM HMRC WEBSITE  THERE IS STILL NO LIMIT ON THE AMOUNT OF CIGARETTES WHICH CAN BE BROUGHT IN FROM EU BUT THE AMOUNT ON WHICH CUSTOMS MIGHT QUESTION THE PURPOSE HAS REDUCED FROM 3200 TO 800

Customs checks when coming from the EU

If a customs official from the UK Border Agency (UKBA) thinks you may be bringing in excise goods such as alcohol and tobacco from the EU for commercial use - perhaps to sell to other people or simply for reimbursement - they may ask you questions and make checks. You may be asked about:

  • the type and quantity of goods you've bought
  • why you bought them
  • how you paid for them
  • how often you travel
  • how much you normally smoke or drink

Although there are no limits on the amount of alcohol and tobacco you can bring in from EU countries, customs officials are more likely to ask you questions if you have more than the following:

Goods brought to the UK from the European Union

Until 30 September 2011

From 1 October 2011

Cigarettes

3,200

800

Cigars

200

200

Cigarillos

400

400

Tobacco

3 kilograms

1 kilogram

Beer

110 litres

110 litres

Wine

90 litres

90 litres

Spirits

10 litres

10 litres

Fortified wine (for example port or sherry)

20 litres

20 litres

If the UKBA is satisfied that the goods are for a commercial purpose it may seize them and any vehicle used to transport them, and may not return them to you. You can find out more in the guide 'What to do if your goods are seized by customs' under 'More useful links'.

Thanks for your help. We bought them at the port last year when we returned from Paxos. This year we are staying in Corfu Town so I am sure there must be shops there that sell cigarettes! I am sure we will find one.

Hi,
It's not worth looking for who sells them the cheapest either as the price is fixed by the government.

Hi
I came back from Kassiopi at the end of May As someone said earlier Amber Leaf is not available I smoke Drum and it is 6.50 euros a pack.Thay have reduced the sizes last year the packs are 40 grams not 50. Still a lot cheaper than over here though equates to £5.18 exchange rate we brought back 8 cartons of 10 +80 packs it cost 528euros so £415.00 approx.
Sorry dont know what other brands but it is always as we have found to order while your away as some places have to order as do not carry that much stock.

We have in the past brought more than that back an never been stopped I hopefully wouldnt envisage a problem because its all the same brand and we haven't bought tobacco in England now for the last 7 years. If I never went to Greece/Amsterdam again then I would have to stop smoking   lol

Have a great holiday

Would be interested to know how much Golden Virgina is if anybody knows please.

I wonder why Amber Leaf is no longer available? We were in Portugal earlier in the year and it has been removed from all shops there too!

Golden Virginia is 6.90 for a 40g pack.
Amber Leaf has never been sold on Corfu to my knowledge (not in the last 5 years anyway).
