We too are planning on coming over again at Easter, bringing friends to show them the places that we love - although realising that they are very different out of season. We shall bring a camera and post some photos.
You make an interesting point - I wonder how things would have developed had this happened a few years ago, when the only access to Agni was by boat?

Most of the taverna owners remove their jetty for the wintertime as they tend to suffer in the storms. Lets hope people are just being cautious.

Let's just hope that the idiots in power see sense and that it would ruin the tavernas in Ag. Steph if all these demands come to fruition. Never mind the rest of the resorts if they come under the same jurisdiction. What are they playing at? Do they totally want to ruin the tourist trade as this seems to be the ultimate result. Cry

Is this rule because  beaches are supposed to be public?
If so they could target places where access has been made difficult because of villas being built so that the beach effectively becomes private.

Sue Avrio. Unfortunately they are not just removing the top of the jetty but also pulling out the posts, not sure what can be done about the concrete bits.
Martyn, you are correct, the Wave Bar jetty is no more.
Anyone visiting San Stephanos now (apparently CV have guests coming out next week) will only be able to eat out in Galini, Nicko is the last man standing so to speak, Costa closed last night.

That is not good Bob. We left Kalami on Wednesday this week and they were still intact. It would be devastating to trade if this happened - lets hope common sense prevails.

Why does it seem that only San Stephanos is affected or has been targeted? I can not find any threads on the web relating to the fines or removal of structures for any other village/resort in Corfu or for that matter anywhere else in the EC.

I don't know, however 3 of the S/S proproprietors assure me the rest of the area has had the same notice.
Its early days yet, not much normally happens until the spring.

We leave for home tomorrow, the latest update that I have is that Wave Bar has indeed removed their jetty, and has now sold off all their outside furniture, a well as selling their outside cover awning and frame.

There are some photographs of Agios Stephanos taken in 1980 here:

I’m not completely useless, I can be used as a bad example.

Thanks for that link to your old photos Michael and to Elliemay for making it clickable.I remember well those days at San Stephanos and Agni as my first holiday there was in 1979 staying at Imerolia, Kassiopi. Have been back every year since, if we make it next year it will be our 35th. anniversary. I have got some good photos of eating on the beach at San Stefano on a day trip with Captain Spiros on his caique Margareta. Did you know Capt. Spiros Michael?, he was the father of Dimitri and Thomas from Kalami. He died too young.

I hope this rule applies to the concrete jetties with steps and handrails that these private villa owners have erected for their own personal use and then ask anybody who ties up there to move on because it's private..My greek friend did just that to show me what would happen and when ask to move on he replied "Will you phone the police or shall I" not a word was said by the villa owner..we fished for half an hour then moved on.

Now here's a coincidence, on our drive home from Corfu, as many know we stop off in Switzerland and then France where we stop for a couple of days with friends.
This year while in France, we were invited to share an evening with some local people who enjoy Greek traditional dancing,(my passion as some may know). One of the ladies there had just returned from her house somewhere in the south of the Peleponese, she told us about the anger along her nearest coast, where they have been summoned to the local police station to sign for a letter notifying them of their fine for installing illegal jetties and structures on the beaches.
So it would appear not to be exclusive to Corfu.

I've just had Costa from Kapareli Taverna on the phone to me giving me what information he has.
He said that he has paid his fine, and intends to keep his jetty and outside seating until ordered not to. So it would seem that all is much the same for this year at least.
No doubt Wave Bar and Damianos outside space will just be different to previouse years.

Damn - there goes my excuse for a vist in April!  Shhhh - don't tell Lynn about the jetty not goingWink

I have heard a version of why this happened, but it would be impolitic to discuss it on the boards.
