Hi,
Have read on Facebook and another forum that non Greek residents, ie. Greek home owners have to provide a Certificate of Residency to their accountant by 31/12/12. Apparently, foreign nationals need to provide certified information about their income from outside of Greece or face paying income tax in Greece.
Has anyone visited their accountant recently and been advised of this?

Please don't accept this as Gospel truth! Take professional advice!

Speaking on behalf of that other forum, Smile not to mention myself, I was aware that a new law had been passed requiring those obtaining their income from outside Greece would be required to prove that they pay tax in that country or face paying tax in Greece. I have seen the law. The problem was, that at that time, our accountant was not sure what form that proof should take.

It appears that a decision has made and a totally inappropriate HMRC form seems to be the chosen route.

This applies both to those permanantly resident and those living here less than 168 days a year.

Hi Bob,
I think that you will find that non Greek residents who owned a holiday home in Greece were exempted from paying  (notional) income tax if they spent less than 183 days, not 168 days, in the country.

However, it now seems that you will be considered a resident unless you can prove otherwise by completing a Certificate of Residence. Looking at this form, I agree it looks totally inappropriate.

Have been trawling through HMRC website and it's still all as clear as mud!!! Unhappy Still not found anything concrete relating to the change in Greek law though. 

Will wait until we see our accountant in October. Who knows? It will probably have changed again by then. Me, a cynic, never! Ermm

You are of course right! I should have said 183 days. Put it down to the heat!

I think the problem lies not with the HMRC site but with the inappropriate use of the form that is required by the Greek tax authority. (As has been discussed elsewhere).

However, having gone through the form, I think it is relatively straight forward and if that is all the Greek tax authority demands, so be it. It's not rocket science.

What irritates me is that it still doesn't stop the 'duckers and divers' from working in Greece and not paying tax anywhere on their earnings here. As with so many things, that will only come to an end when they strengthen enforcement. Like that's going to happen given the economic climate!

Is the form you are discussing the A1 form which you need to obtain in the UK to show that you pay income tax. If so has anyone actually managed to obtain one of these certificates as the form is totally inappropriate so would appreciate any advice on completion. The paperwork asks you to state how many days you work in each country - how has anyone managed to get around this successfully?

Not sure as the online form does not have a number on. However, I am going to wait until advised by our accountant before filling in any possibly unnecessary forms.

We were told by our friend/lawyer that we needed a certificate of residence to prove that we live and pay tax in the UK. I went on to the HMRC site and filled in the form and should hear back within 14 days so will let you know what happens.
