I have never put my name and address on the outside of my case since I was warned many years ago about the risks of doing so. I'm going to Prague this week for a few days so will ensure that the case is easily identifiable. I think a nice big Pink ribbon should suffice!! Wink

Hi David1,

I've seen people in Australia and Asia have their bags wrapped, I am sure there are wrapping services in the airports. The Border Security entering Australia is very strict and we left some items i.e. crisps and toffees in our cases and the whole case had to be opened and they took our word for it but they are very unhappy when you forget to tell them on your Incoming Passenger Card. You would have to take the wrapping off then, mind you, you would have arrived at your destination in theory so it wouldn't matter.

I've also seen a lot of people from India visit the Far East to buy TV's, DVD's, lots of electrical items and they wrap them up in this wrapping stuff when they send them back home. It works for them, we have never had our cases wrapped.

Enjoy Prague and the ribbon and may your case find you at your destination airport!!!

Regards, Pegasus.

I always just put my mobile phone number on the label, plus the destination of where we are going on the outward journey, and phone number,  Post Code and surname for the return journey. I tend to print off labels and then use sellotape to laminate them using the Holiday Truths website tools.

The amazing thing is this person not only to picked up the wrong case but then proceeded to check it in again on another flight!! I wonder if they asked the "did you pack the case yourself" question? Can you imagine if we hadnt used our brains and did some detective work ourselves they probably would have got all the way home realised their mistake and then what would they have done with no D on the case and their own still spinning round on belt number 7!!! dohhhhhh

Thanks Kathy I think that is really useful. I've made a note of it for future reference. Smile

I am really paranoid about losing my luggage especially on the outward journey. Just in case I pack spare pants and a bikini in my hand luggage. Just in case I have 2 sets of tags with destination on each suitcase. Just in case I have a piece of paper inside the case with my travel details on. Just in case I mix our clothes between the cases. Just in case...Ermm

Hi Julesx2,

It doesn't bear thinking about when you really think what happened. You were very quick thinking thankfully. Yes, how can they say they packed it themselves when they clearly didn't. The airport staff I am sure don't like things like this happening. Imagine quite a lot of people checking in with the wrong cases and all those planes they would have to retrieve the cases from!!! All those late flights taking off! Good job it doesn't happen very often if you ask me.

On my case I have a combination dial and two locks built into the case, anyone who tried to get in my case 1. Their keys would not work in my locks and 2. The combination lock wouldn't open with their number. Mind you, would they even open the case transiting or wait until they got home? Me personally I would check in for my second flight and only when I got home would I open it.

This is a bit of good advice for anyone with a combination lock. I have a Delsey cabin case for hand luggage and although a great case, it does have a tendency when you use the combination lock to 'forget' the number. This happened to me in the hotel 45 minutes before we were due to leave in the taxi to go to the airport. There are only 999 combinations that it can possibly be. So I started from 100 and worked my way up, at number 704 I found it! It is tedious but you can do it yourself in 40 or so minutes. When I first got my Samsonite it went in the attic until we were going to use it, when I got it down three months later I forgot the number! Samsonite said take it to a dealer 40 miles away and they will sort it. I was going the next day. That was when I worked it out you can do it yourself.

Glad again you got your case back, there are some horror stories out there.

Regards,
Pegasus.

Having watched the baggage for about 3 hours  from the now closed balcony at Gatwick being transferred by carriages to and fro and seeing the number of bags that just never made it, many thrown off the carriages, some run over, it was shocking, am amazed so many as do make it home in one piece, the worst one was the Samsonite type that pinged open, all the clothes etc fell out, bundled back in by driver, not sealed and shoved back on top...things were trailing from it...did it ever get where it was going I wonder?

Oh and one more memory, the one on the Corfu carousel quite clearly marked...Dalaman Airport...

I put our name and address on the inside of our cases.  I'm going to add our phone number this year.
Never put anything on outside other than holiday destination/Flight details-that's just asking for trouble.

Hi Maryj,

My Samsonite is a solid one and I think even if they ran over it, it wouldn't give. I also pack my case in such a way so that even if it pinged open because all the locks were broken and just hanging on by a thread my clothes etc would stay intact. My husband has a 'semi soft' case and they managed to trash the logo on his so it split it. He has a Carlton case. I think in a couple of flights it will completely give up the ghost, he is more hopeful! My case does not have a zip.

Don't you just hate going to Corfu airport and waiting for hours for the cases on the carousel. It is a small airport and I think they deliberately go for a brew when a flight comes in! I have been on a flight on an A380 and the cases arriving on the carousel was fifteen minutes and three minutes going through Customs. Needless to say, it wasn't the UK! That happens everytime we go, they are very efficient.

Regards,
Pegasus.

Corfu airport has got a LOT quicker than it used to be- in the 80s I remember our clients sometimes waiting up to one and a half hours for cases- not because of tea breaks etc but because of sheer volume of flights

Sounds ok kathy but a ID tag wouldnt have stopped someone picking up our bag at the baggage reclaim, and had it been taken to Aberdeen it could of taken weeks to get it back!!! Im going to find mr jules the yuckiest colour case I can possibly find and then jazz it up with tape and straps...hahah now try and mistake it for yours!!

Hello Everybody,

My husband has just made a comment: Have you ever noticed that when you collect your cases off the carousel, only one person does it. There may be a wife or husband (spotter saying that is my case) but one person generally gets them off.

So he further asks 'why does the whole party crowd around the carousel when there is only one person collecting the cases?' We see it all the time. Me for one I stand back because I give room to people who need to collect their case. I get a bit bored hanging about but we get there in the end!

I must admit that Corfu has got quicker, the longest we have waited was two hours, I was falling asleep waiting! We're going on a Monday this time, I dread to think because all the tour operators come in on a Monday. Happy days.

Regards,
Pegasus.

Hi folks,
Well I must be going to a different Corfu airport to all of you judging by these comments. In the past 8 years we have never had to wait overly long for our cases to come through. Luck maybe? Smile
Must say that we normally wait longer at Gatwick than Corfu, and then the dreaded 100 mile walk to get out. OK, bit of an over statement, but it always seems longer to me in the UK airport.
Flew back to Norwich a couple of times and that is abominable. You have to wait outside in the rain (yes it is always raining) to get through passport control. Then they charge you £10.00 for the privilege of flying from there. Know where I'd rather be!!! Approve

The funniest bag wait at Corfu we have seen was when the baggage belt kept going round and stopping going round and stopping with nothing on it. A very large group of males with pink Kavos t shirts started a Mexican wave, very much in time and then all the other tourists joined in as well in a perfectly formed circle round the carousel. The workers in the airport just stared in amazed confusion. It was hilarious!! julesxx

Jules the tracking System locates it quickly , that is the point of it ~~and the reason we get it ~~ My friend had it, they located her Luggage in a couple of hours and she got it back the same day xxx

We always fly from / to Manchester airport so thanks for this warning. Our cases are bright pink and our friends laugh at us but they are the only bright pink ones on the carousel. We also have woven straps around them which have our names on.

I think at Manchester airport they have offered a tagging service before but have never taken it up. It was just a few pounds.

Kathy Im not disputing the fact they can track it in an airport but if its been taken by someone by mistake and they have left the airport and gone home with it what happens then? Does it depend on the honesty of that person to report it and then they get it back for you? Whilst waiting for the missing case a man told us some people do this on purpose hoping the case has more value inside that their own!!!

I couldn't personally see someone being honest and taking it back to the airport, we live 40 miles away from Manchester and I must admit I would, although probably everybody wouldn't. I would to think that if it was my case that was missing someone would be honest too.
