Well having read various news print today I got to thinking
How many people still have Drachmas in jars, drawers, under the bed, hidden.
The euro hasnt been the greatest thing to enhance the Greek economy I remeber the my local kafeneon in the village still had his prices in drachmas with the euro converted to equivalant price.
Everyone complained back then that the conversion rate looked bad, they had to accept it.
It was only when George, whose bar it was, did a refit on the bar that he took it down.(that was 3 years ago) that I think the locals accepted the euro was here to stay.
Well maybe the drachma may be back .... so go look where you put them.
In my heart I hope they dont lose the euro as the country isnt the only one thats got problems (wonder where my pesetas have gone) Wonder what others think?

My understanding is that, if they default, they must leave the Eurozone, so would return to the drachma.
I know last year many Greeks thought that may not be such a bad thing; starting afresh with no great debt hanging over them. If they stay with the Euro, there are many years of austerity ahead and the ordinary Greeks are struggling already  |

The Drachma will (in my opinion) be the new Drachma and the old one wont be valid.
As a lot of these dodgy politicians etc will no doubt have mountains of the old ones squirrelled away this is the only way to do it really. To leave the euro does NOT necessarily mean leaving the eurozone, the Uk is in the eurozone but we dont (thank god) have the euro.

I once put a £20 note in a change machine (17 years ago) and got 43,000 lira out  And of course those old machines gave terrible exchange rates..

Interesting point about whether or not Greece would have to leave the EC, apparently whilst it is OK for the to be in the EC, when the Euro legislation was set up, there was no exit mechanism included which allowed for exit from the Euro without exit from the EC as well. So unless new legislation is introduced Greece could not leave the Euro without leaving the EC. There was an interesting article on this subject on the BBC web site recently. |

I really don't think that Greece will be leaving the Euro-zone or going back to the Drachma..It has been estimated that it would cost the Euro-zone €1,000,000,000,000..thats 1 trillion euros..far far more than they have aready decided to loan her.
And Greece failing wouldn't just affect Europe it would be world wide
Also remember If the unthinkable ever did happen Greece would be catapulted back into the1930's without her ever being able to borrow a cent...people say Argentina came out of it OK, but she still can't borrow money on the international markets.
At the moment it looks like there could be some agreement on a coalition between the parties..instead of a re-election..
So my betting is that Greece will get her loans and stay with the Euro..Because she is far to important a member to let fail.

Well no deal on the coalition, last attempt will be made at the weekend or another election.
Greece has its own printing facility called IETA. Built in 1941,
the Attica plant today is outfitted with "state-of-the-art machinery," according
to the Bank of Greece's website. But IETA's printing in recent years has been
limited. It has been one of five or six countries responsible for printing
batches of €10 notes, according to the ECB. Wonder if they have been tempted to run a few billion Dracs off as well??

Wow G8 want Greece to stay in eurozone
 maybe they know something we dont maybe us going to lend them a few dollers maybe the president fancies a holiday on Corfu and wants a good exchange rate

Just a thought (Im no money expert) but does Germany want a strong euro?
The reason I ask is someone pointed out to me that Germany is Europe's biggest exporting country so a weak euro helps them. I may be well off the mark with this, but it seems a fair point.
