Just a reminder for those coming to the resort:
  • There remains only one ATM in the resort (the ATE Bank by Ana's Supermarket) - it was frequently out of order last summer (lack of cash and/or Comms problems!).  From personal use, the Sundays / Mondays seemed to be the worst days;
  • The nearest Pharmacy (on the main road, opposite where you turn down for St George's) has closed since last summer. The closest now is in the centre of Argirades (on the main road through the village, so you can't miss it!)

If you have transport, Lefkimmi has about 7 ATMs that I can remember it is approximately 15/20 minutes drive away. The first one is at Dimitra supermarket on the right as you reach the bad bend at the traffic lights then the rest are in the town itself.

Base on experience, it would really be great if you could already have your money ready with you wherever you go. In as much as ATMs are readily available in the area, and actually lots of them, there are still some risks that are posted when you do just that.

I remember having my ATM card trapped inside the machine for some weird reason which rendered me walking on thin ice just to make things a lot easier to bear.

Thanks for the advice.
Are credit cards readily accepted in the tavernas?
And will any hotels/bars let you use a credit card to get cash?

(Looking forward to a week in St George South next month)

I would strongly suggest you take cash albeit sterling or euros.  Most hotels/apartments have safety deposit boxes and it was something of a relief this year not to have to keep changing travellers cheques every few days.

Although the ATM at Annas Supermarket, opposite Tzevenos, appeared to be working OK whilst we were there I would not like to have to rely on this, especially  if you do not have your own transport to get to Lefkimmi.

Hi Sue
Thanks for the advise.
But for a family of 4, eating and drinking, even for a week, thats a lot of cash.
Im happy enough to do a travellers cheque every other day.
But would prefer just to use a credit card. Presumably they are accepted in the tavernas?

Just got back from SGS....what a wonderful place. There are restaurants with Visa etc signs outside but we always used cash. I had trouble one evening with the ATM not working but it was OK by next day. A local guy told me to always come in the morning as it often stops working late in the day. I was also told that there are ATMs in Moraitika but I didn't check that.

Yes, I was concerned about taking all our money in cash, but as long as you know you have access to a safety deposit box then it should be no problem.  We knew that Tzevenos had this facility so were not concerned about the money once we had got it safely locked up.  We did have a minor hiccup when we first arrived and Richard mislaid his spare cash but once we located it inside the book he was reading everything was OK and it was then safely locked up!

An update for 2013!.
The ATM in the resort stopped dispensing cash about four weeks ago. I raised this with ATE Bank and was subsequently told that my message has been passed to the Pireaus Bank branch that handles the ATM's.  Apparently the maintenance/filling of ATM's was out-sourced to a security firm about four weeks ago.
The Pharmacy on the main road opposite where you turn down for the resort has re-opened (under different management)

Is the delicious bakery opposite side of the road to the chemist still going strong? They make the most delicious baclava & kataifi I have ever tasted, long may it continue to trade.

The bakery is very definitely still there - I share your hopes for its longevity!
