Hello everyone!
We fly to Corfu with 10-hours stopover in Athens. Putting aside all border control formalities and trip to/from airport approx. 5 hours left for sightseeing. What are must-see places in the city center within walking distance from Syntagma and Acropolis?

We had a 9 hour layover 3 years ago and just managed a few sites, long lunch, stroll to Syntagma and over the road to watch the guards at Parliment. Check the link below, you can do it in 5 hours.

Thank you, NIGEL! Really great route! I hope there will be enough time to stroll without rush. And by the way when guards changing takes place - only at 11 AM or every hour?

Sunday is the big parade at 11.00am, all other times it's every hour.

Thank you, NIGEL!
Some more question as it's my first flight to Athens.
Have we to pick-up our luggage between flights (both flights are operated by Aegean)?
What's the cost of luggage lockers in the airport? How are they paid: by cash or by card?
Is airport bus route X95 a convenient way to get to the city and not to stuck in traffic jams?
And, finally, are there are crowds of people on the entrance to Acropolis in the midday in September?

Your luggage should be checked through to your final destination so you should not have to use the left luggage facility. IF not its on the far left of the arrivals hall, see link for prices.

We took the metro into the city, very clean with air con and took 45 minutes, more than the bus but we liked it. You take the blue line from the airport and change at Syntagma, swap to the red line and go 1 stop South, that will bring you out at the start of your walk, see map below.

Thanks a lot Nigel! Please advise whether it's better to start from Acropoli station and go direct to Acropolis hill or to start from Syntagma and to stroll through Plaka towards Acropoli first as I planned earlier?  Your route misses Syntagma but we'd love to see guards changing. Or we won't have much time to visit Plaka and Syntagma?Ermm

Start from Acropli and you will end up at Monastiraki, either walk or hop on the metro to Syntagma to see the Guards, then back on the metro to the Airport, have fun!

 Hi, Nigel!
We both are truly thankful to you for the route advices! It was really perfect.Big smile We caught metro train from the airport to Syntagma, then changed to the red line to Acropoli. Had a pretty tasty and norishing breakfast in the cafe nearby metro station and started ascension to Arcopolis then. Though the Parfenon was under reconstruction and partly covered by scaffolding, the site is really breathtaking! Climbed the Areopagus rock and followed decent to Acient Agora. The last point was the Temple of Hephaestus. A short stop for frappe refresment and then strolled through Plaka towards Syntagma. Dropped in the National Gardens and then watched the ritual of The Evzones Guards change in front of the Parliament. And finally made our way back to airport. That all took about 6 hours in total.
Here we are Sleepy
