Organising your own transfers does save you quite a bit and many people do it year after year without ever having a problem. However, it's not something I'm comfortable doing. Last year the weather forecast for our day of departure was so bad that neither Illida nor Despina were due to run and we were going to have to catch the car ferry that goes to Igoumenitsa and then get another one to Corfu. Later in the evening prior to departure, we were told that if the weather was really bad, the harbourmaster would stop even the car ferry sailing, so we didn't get a lot of sleep that night! Early next morning, we got a phone call asking us to be ready to be picked up within half an hour, as Illida had been cleared to make one early morning run and our rep had managed to get us tickets for it. So the problem was solved for us, but it's definitely not a situation I'd like to have had to deal with ourselves!

Another time there was a taxi strike in Corfu on our departure day and our transfer company organised a minibus to get us from the port to the airport, without which we'd have been forced to haul our luggage to the bus station in Town.

Like I said, plenty of people manage year after year without any problems, but it's up to you to decide and I think it's only fair to point out the possible risks!

Friends of ours were also caught up in the ferry cancellations due to bad weather - and as with Elaine, having booked transfers with the local villa agents, all was sorted with tickets on the 'emergency' early large ferry. Without this support, they would have been very unlikely to get off the island/catch their flight home.  My sister looked at independent booking of the elements of the transfer and to be honest, you are not really paying much of a premium for the added security. The instances of cancellations or changes due to freak high winds even in June/July seem to have increased over the years I seem to think.
We also use the local agencies to book ourl Igoumenitsa to Paxi car ferry and having missed the pre-booked Monday one due to late arrival by Superfast in 2016, without the knowledge and contacts of Irene & George at Routsis, we would have been marooned on the mainland for a week (the ferry for Wed, Thu, Fri Sat were fully booked (mid June!!)
As it was, they got us on the one 2 days later.
Each to their own of course

Jeff  - only 245 days, 18 hours until departure LOL

Jeff and Elaine - Yes, what would we save  £50?

So having brought Roxi 5 back to Loggos in a  storm this year and been congratulated by Capt. Nikos jnr and others we have always known what the sea can do and change.
We came out of Gaios after a nice lunch and as we cruised out of the New Port could see a problem. One big black storm coming over from Corfu.
No problem. Made our way up to Loggos and dropped anchor behind the breakwater to catch the sun.
BLOODY HELL - 20 minutes later someone opened the door.
The way the sea changed in such a short time. We only just had time to lift the anchor before it would have been a problem. But we managed and it was fun Thumbs Up

Malcy contact Irene at Routsis, Cousin of Lefcothea, she'll sort out your transfers as they are one of the island agents for the boats. We ended up on the later boat as flight times made getting the earlier one a bit dicey. In the end even in late July as it was mid week we were down st the port before it left. We had a drink & meal & people watched whilst waiting for the later one.

For flights have a look on skyscanner for a comparison. Sometimes getting a different airline for both legs is cheaper. Plus the generous cabin baggage of some means you may only need one hold bag?? Pre order Sun creams Tec with Boots & pick up at the airport duty free. I have bought my sunscreen at the pharmacy in Lakka for the last few years, suits our sensitive skin, not too badly priced & a Greek co too. Use plain olive oil soap bought on the island, all saves weight & a suitcase!!

Never mind.

Still would love to do a trip with a boat of our own over the chanel and then down via the Seine and Paris down to The Canel de Midi. We met a couple doing this when we  moored up next to them in mid France who had come over the chanel and were going to make a new life with there cat in The South of France. The lady was a hairdresser. But they did have a problem with twin screws in the shallow waters.

We've booked the flights in June
05.55 and 11.35 return £355 inc. seats and hold baggage for 2.
On EJ

Got back from a few days away with the Caravan to find we had been broken into. Back door top glass smashed. Nothing touched downstairs. Curtains drawn and upstairs ransacked! Good watches, rings and other items. Gone to a Low Life.

Oh Malcy! So sorry to hear about your break-in - what a dreadful sight to come home to    I hope they didn't take anything irreplaceable.
I wasn't lost - I was just taking an interesting detour!

Thank you Elaine
Yes.  They took some of Val's irreplaceable items.
My watches ?  They are now registered as stolen.

But, the door has new glass now. The Police have been very good
and thanks to them we now have shock alarm devices on windows
and doors. Life goes on.

Our little Villa is waiting for us in June. Babbis will arrange our car
and Meandre our transfers.
And Lefcothea will be  LOL  Lefcothea Big smile !!!
