Back to Top of Nissaki PageNissaki Village

Nissaki means Little Island and hundreds of years ago that is what it was. On top of the island, now stands a Taverna. In years past, the local people worked on this island, shaping stones and local rocks bought to them by boat. The stones were used for building. After many years, the chippings falling into sea formed a ramp and eventually joined the land. Now there is a narrow road that now runs between the old island where the Taverna stands and the mainland. Nissaki has a small beach and is extremely pretty. The beach is a small horseshoe shape with fine pebbles, offering excellent swimming, although it can become a little crowded when daytrip boats arrive for lunch.

Nissaki straggles along the coastline and the various bays should not be confused. The beach and tavernas at Nissaki are next along the coast from Barbati and Glyfa and are just below the village centre with its church. The Nissaki Beach Hotel is actually at Krouzeri Beach.

Back to Top of Nissaki PageWho is Nissaki for

This is the ideal resort for people of any age who enjoy quiet surroundings, heavenly views and the feeling of being part of a small and friendly community, and of course there is wonderful sea-bathing and snorkeling. Teenagers may find things a little too quiet in the evenings, but parents can easily rent a car to make livelier Kassiopi and Ipsos accessible, with a choice of evening entertainment.

Back to Top of Nissaki PageThe Nissaki Beach

Type

Sand, fine shingle and rocky around the edges.

Facilities

No public toilets, but the owners of the neighbouring tavernas will allow you to use their facilities if you buy lunch or a drink some time during the day. Sunbeds and umbrellas can be rented.

Child Suitability

The beach is well away from the main road and the access road is a cul-de-sac, so no speeding cars can use it. Nissaki beach is small, but rarely crowded. The water shelves gradually and becomes quite deep, but the little bay is very sheltered. Rocks on either side make great play areas for older children and hide small fish and sea creatures in their pools and crevices, keeping kids busy and amused for hours.

Accessibility

There is a ramp on to the beach and a few steps from the beachside taverna.

Cleanliness and Urchins

The Nissaki beach area is kept very clean, apart from the occasional day when a strong wind has left seaweed on it, but this is soon cleared away. The water is clear and clean too. There are no sea urchins in the waters of the bay - it is only near the rocks that you might encounter one occasionally. Wear plastic beach shoes for extra comfort and safety.

Back to Top of Nissaki PagePlaces of Interest

Nissaki is quite spread out, on either side of the winding main road, and has only the church, school and local cafeneion as its centre. Footpaths and one lane lead down to the beaches, and two steeply winding roads lead up and away from the main road, into the hills that form the lower slopes of Mount Pantocrator. This is Corfu￿s highest mountain and is very impressive when seen from Nissaki. Cars can only go so far along these roads ￿ once they peter out, though, there are marvelous walks in the Nissaki uplands, with abandoned villages, ample wildlife(especially the flowers in spring), and incredible views that extend right into the mountains of Albania.

Back to Top of Nissaki PageHow to get to Nissaki

Follow the main coastal road from Corfu town towards the North East of the island. Pass through Ipsos and Barbati, Watch out for the narrow roads and bad bends as you wind around the hills of the North East of Corfu. Nissaki beach is signposted on your right, take this turning, go slowly as like most of the smaller bays in this part of the island the road down to it is steep and narrow. Go all the way to the bottom and there is limited parking on the roadside.

Some evenings, a boat taxi service is available to Taverna Agni - 7 Euro per person return.

Hi Kaytee,
I settled on Nissaki in the end so we won't see each other this time after all.
I thought with my daughter who will be 23 by then, it might be better to be on a good bus route to visit other places.
Enjoy your holiday, not long now, I can't wait especially with all this bad weather here.

I heard that Taverna Glyfa (an old favourite between Nissaki and Barbati) had reopened after being closed last year. The beach below the taverna now has sun beds and there is even a small pontoon to park up boats. The food apparently is excellent and good value
In Lakones there is Boulis restaurnt with stunning views over Paleokastritsa.  It's traditional food similar to my first two choices but with the view!

David
Hi Wereangels

I have to second David's recommendation above.  Last year we were looking for somewhere in Lakones other than where the coach trips go (nothing against those establishments, just that we've been there, done that) and another site member recommended Boulis.  We enjoyed our first lunch there so much we drove over from Kalami twice more during our fortnight.

We also like Elizabeth's at Doukades, could sit outside there all day watching life come through the square whilst we eat.  One of the things we intended to do last year was go up there in the evening.  We didn't manage to fit it in so it's still on the to do list.  Two other places we tried for the first time last year and intend returning to were Mon Amour at Kavadades (inland from Sidari) where we had some really good rollo and the taverna at Imerolia which was on par with Taverna Agni price wise and was a lovely experience with the sea food, the setting & the view.

A few years ago we had a delicious, indulgent, sea food lunch at Akrogiali at St Georges North.  It was a bit hair raising to get there but the lunch was worth it.

Almost forgot George's on Almyros beach.  Another place we say we'll get to in the evening but haven't done yet.  We didn't eat there last year but have had some delicious lunches there in previous years.  Also on our do list are Zephyros at Almyros and Roummeli at Nissaki, both of which we've seen well recommended in the last couple of years but we haven't managed to get to either yet.  So many possibilities but unfortunately there are only so many meals one can eat in two weeks.

Deedee Big smile

I think it is called Elani's the one in Nissaki. We once had a Greek Hors Deuve for 6 there, it was close to end of season and he didnt really have a menu he just told us what was available, it was just fantastic. (There were 6 of us we weren't just greedy!)

We enjoy Pizza Pete's the best we've ever had. The Rex, next road behind the Liston and the Italian in a little square just off the main shopping street, not the one with the blue tree! And the best value for a quick lunch, the Ouzo Mezze at Olympia on the Liston. Another favourite is the taverna tucked into the bank by the beach at Nissaki run by a lovely young chap whose wife is a musician, his fish and lemon rice is to die for. Sorry this is all a bit vague but I never was good at names. Must try Rouvas this time. Not long now.

Depends where you are staying as there is Nissaki village and harbour, the main road area and Nissaki Beach Hotel. We always stay at the village and all the tavernas are good - favourite for us is Mitsos as they are so friendly and remember and welcome you year after year. Food is good, fairly standard taverna stuff. Setting stunning at the beach, jutting out to the sea.
Best for food and classy atmosphere is getting the boat transfer to Agni, a really memorable meal but more pricey than local. Other local tavernas are the Olive Press, Nissaki Sea View (better just for drinks I think), and the one overlooking the beach (?Eleni) can't remember the name - nice view. But really you can't go wrong in any of them, very personal choice. Other people will have different opinion to me.

I discovered another way to get to Arillas last year, when you get to the Gravia bar on the top instead of walking down the cliff path, take the left turn road and you go through a little farming community with lots of animals and lovely gardens.
The good thing is it seems fairly flat when walking but you are going downhill to the back of Arillas, near the petrol station and Christos Apartments. There is a shop at this turning to get supplies.
Follow the road down and you will end up at the beach, then you could walk back up the cliff path, a nice round route.
I'm back in August (going to Nissaki in June though, hope to find some nice walks there)

My husband and I stayed last year in Villa Thalassa which was right on the beach.  We booked through Agni and there is a grocery in Nissaki called Aphrodites that will deliver.  I worked with Agni to give them a list, unfortunately my email never got through to them, which we didn't realize until we actually got to our Villa.  Aphrodites will also pick you up to get groceries, it isn't huge but it was big enough.

For the most part we used the little corner store ran by George, now this is close to the beach, so depending how high up on the hill you are this may be a hike to take your groceries back.  He had the basics, fresh fruit and fresh baked bread every morning.  Beer, water, eggs, soda, bacon and other essentials. George even had beach shoes and snorkels, both of which we were very grateful for! We arrived late in the day, and the little corner store was closed, but George was sitting in the Taverna by the Beach and he opened up the store and let us get some essentials until we made it to the grocery.

Really the most cooking we did was breakfast, we ate out for Dinner.  Highly recommend Spiros Taverna on the Beach great food and service and really good prices.

Last year was our first trip to Corfu too, and we had a wonderful time.  Hope you enjoy!

I have always fancied staying there, I remember asking about it on here last May. We actually come to Corfu for 3 or 4 weeks in the summer holidays, but for May half term I like to go with my elder daughter (22) when the weather is cooler for walking. Although 2 years ago went to Arillas and could only walk a few days as their was a heatwave, as you know the walks in that area are very hilly.
I have booked somewhere in Nissaki from 4th June, I thought that might be good walking area, but now you have reminded me of Liapades I might re-think my plans. I will take a look now.
Thanks Kaytee, will you be there on my dates? It would be nice to meet a regular forum member.

Well, how did it go?

The short answer is "absolutely brilliant" - a whole holiday in a day!  The more detailed version is what follows.....

So, I'm just about the first person off the bus (from the plane) up the ramp and through the terminal to meet Lynn, of whom there is no sign.  Just as I get my phone out, she rolls up in the hire car, so we head off into the airport car park to get me added to the insurance.  "Yannis The Car" (Value Plus) is wearing a frown - he says to Lynn "you are flying out tonight?"  "Yes" we say " but Martyn has just arrived but is going back tonight" - he can't believe it (he's not the only one) but sorts out the paperwork and we head off for Porta, along the east coast - it really is great to be back. It's amazing just how much like "home" it feels.

As we pass through Nissaki, I spot Nathan walking along the road, but can't stop for a chat as we have a boot full of impatient taxi - sorry Nathan - but I did wave furiously.

We take the sharp left turn in Kendroma and take the back road up to Porta - it is a riot of wild flowers; the colours are so vibrant at this time of year, before the hot summer sun has had the chance to dessicate them.  The views to the right, across towards Albania are stunning, particularly as it is so clear - none of the haze that we associate with summer.

Lynn has done a wonderful job of opening up the house for the summer and all is now back in place, with new beds purchased just yesterday - they look very comfortable, but I'm not going to find out this trip!   We have a quick coffee, sit in the garden and relax before heading off to lunch.

However, before that, we drop down into San Stephanos to have a look around to see what's going on - it's very busy as businesses start to get ready for the season.  We bump into Damianos and have a quick chat before heading for lunch with friends at their house in the hills behind Acharavi (this being a change of plan).  On the way, we drive along Avlaki beach, just to have a look.

Lunch is wonderful, a crab pasta made with local spider crabs, but is over all too quickly and we head off for a look around Kassiopi, which is very, very quiet - just like English Sunday afternoons used to be.  That said, the sun is warm, the sea is very clear and blue - and the wave bar is open, so we wander round for a frappe -  I make friends with Max (the cocker spaniel) and we while away an hour or so.

All too soon, it's time to head back to the house, pack what few things we are taking back to the UK and lock up.  We conclude that a quick drink (and perhaps a little something to eat) is called for, so we drop into Roumelli on the way to the airport and receive a very warm welcome and hear all about the new baby.  The tsigari, chips and Mythos are all fantastic.

Back at the airport, we hand the car back to Yannis (who is still shaking his head in disbelief) and check in.  Time for a last Corfu drink in the upstairs cafeteria and as we watch the sun slowly sink below the hills to the west, our plane back to the UK touches down.

I have to say, it was really nice of Easy Jet to lay on a private plane for our trip back to the UK, it made leaving after such a short visit so much easier! (Actually, it wasn't really a private plane, but as this was the first flight out of Luton, there were only 12 of us on board, so it was very relaxed!).

The bus does. It continues on going through Nissaki and finally stopping at Kassiopi - where it then turns around and goes back.

Several ATMs in Dassia.

The track down to Nissaki starts at the foot of the final climb up to the top of Pantocrator and dives off to the right.  The track down to Kassiopi goes through Santa (I think!).

Personally, I favour a 4x4!

As you say Susie H, I would'nt do it, but spending the whole of last summer up in the hills above Acharavi, and seldom going to the beach before about 5 pm, you would be ammazed at the number of walkers we encountered during the height of the day all over the place. We even met a party of German tourists in Petalia who had walked all the way from Acharavi who wanted to know where the track was to Nissaki, or alternatively Kassiopi. They had a guide book telling them they existed.

Thanks for the advice everyone, will stick with Sea View in Nissaki but am toying with the idea of Angelicas over in Agios Gordis as well, so now it's between those two.
The trouble is every place is unique in Corfu and I love so many places. In the summer we are going to San Stefanos for 2 weeks as we loved the place we stayed at so much, then we are going down to Messonghi for the last week which will be our 4th visit to Kerkyra Island apartments.
They are in such a beautiful place and easily accessable by bike or car or even walking to so many of the lesser visited southern towns and beaches.
Sorry for rambling on, what I was going to say was May half term week is when I try somewhere new and do a bit of walking , I have never stayed in Nissaki but stayed in Agios Gordis twice at Sebastians, but didn't walk to Pendati or anywhere as it was August and too hot.
So what's it to be?
I love the East coast and I also love the West coast.....as Harry Hill would say!!!

I don't know Alikis, but gather it is up on the main road so further to walk to the beach. Probably lovely views, but harder work to get to the seaside.

Have stayed in villas around Nissaki, but always visit SeaView for drinks, coffee or use the lovely pool. Very friendly staff, no problems using pool or joining in music or quiz nights etc. It is a quiet place, beautiful sea view (of course), but enough going on and just a short quiet lane down to Nissaki beach and the local tavernas. If up to me I would vote for SeaView!

I havent stayed at Alikis but have visited often as my daughter and friend stayed there and other friends have stayed there, but I have stayed at Nissaki Sea View about 10 times! Alikis are lovely and the pool and cooking facilities by the pool are great, it is also near Midnight - the local cocktail bar and near a few shops - its only 5 minutes walk up the hill from Nissaki Sea View, which in my opinion is the best place to stay in Nissaki.  Its right down near the beach and tavernas and has magnificent views over Corfu from your sunbed by the pool.  It has a snack bar on site for day time snacks and serves lovely meals in the evening.  It has a lovely bar with pool table and internet access, serves lovely cocktails and is a fab place to chill in the evenings.  It is 2 minutes from local shops so its handy for everything.  My opinion would be to stay with your original booking but maybe walk up one day and sit by the pool at Alikis and ask to see a room and you can decide for yourself if you visit again.  Hope this helps Tongue

I thought there might be problems when I started looking for ferries/flights. And it seemed such a good idea. I was initially worried about Greece this year, for the obvious reasons, but if we all did this they will never get out of the financial difficlties, and I reckon we will be very welcome visitors.

So next plan is where. Will definitely be Nissaki, but a weeks is enough. Will give Paxos a miss, to try somwhere else, and Lefkada or Kepahlonia seemed obvious choices, but too hard work and expensive to go from Ionian islands to Athens and back. Same with driving -
drive all the time at home so don't usually do hire care on holiday. Went to Parga one year and liked it (via Paxos and back by Bus and Igoumenitsa ferry.) Anywhere else down that coast worth visiting? Anyone with bright ideas for stage two would be very welcome. Just somewhere quiet but walking to tavernas, beach etc and pretty - not too busy or touristy. Thanks!

PS whatever has happened to the forum since I last visited?

We did a lovely walk from Kaminaki beach - heading north/east along the coast, through the grounds of the Nissaki Beach Hotel, Agni Bay and finished up in Kalami.

We set off at 7am (didn't want to be doing a lot of hiking in the midday sun!). Arrived at Agni Bay by about 9am and stopped at the Taverna Agni for coffee and breakfast. We were a bit early but Eleni rustled up some bacon rolls and we sat for an hour or so by the beach drinking coffee and watcing the world go by. We arrived at Kalami around 12.30, having stopped in Yialiskari Bay for some swimming. There was a fairly steep climb up to the main road where we caught the bus back to Kalami.

The walk itself wasn't too strenuous but is a bit up and down and is a rough track most of the time through the olive groves. As it follows the coast it meanders a bit but the views are fantastic. Think it was about 3 miles all told.

Can't decide between Nissaki Sea View (booked with booking.com already, but you can cancel with them without any charge as you pay the hotel on arrival) or Alikis Apartments. Does anyone have any views on these 2 places? Hoping to do a bit of walking with my daughter on June 4th for a week. Is this a good area for walking not too strenousely (not to the top of Mt.Pantokrator for instance)
Did a lot of walks 2 years ago around San Stephanas NW using the Lance Chilton guides, they were brilliant, you can order on the internet, published by Merango.

Great that you have brought the forum back. Will be staying at a friends villa in Nissaki in September, so will have to make a very long overdue visit to Agni.

Great to have everything back. First time in a zillion years that I'm not staying in Paleo this year, but will be visiting a few times in September to catch up with our friends. Am on the other side staying at a friends villa in Nissaki, but at least very convenient for the delights of Agni!
