Hiya, I have been looking at Benitses for next year as a change from Messonghi, Yeah I don't travel far from "home"!). Thing is, I holiday alone now , and would like to find a cosy bar, where I could sit outside listening to good music, and be able to "people watch" if there is no one around to chat to. I am thinking of staying at Argo Studios, and would probably eat there most evenings, but I do like to have a meal beside the sea at sunset, any ideas on traditional tavernas by the beach or seafront would be much appreciated. Thanks, Jackie

A long time since last post on this I know but would just like to say the boards had been repaired when we were there in May and hoping they still ok when we go back in September. Its a great shame that the beach in Messonghi is not looked after properly because so many people love Messonghi and go back year after year like myself. Whose responsibility is the up keep of the beach??? View Topic:

I was in Messonghi for 2 weeks at the end of May this year and the rubbish situation was terrible. The rubbish was piled high on the road near to Zacs Taverna the smell was terrible then the rubbish was collected and because it had been there so long and all the liquids HAD seeped out the area was stinking but they did come and swill the area. We left just after this so don't know what has happened since. We go back to Messonghi on September and hoping its been resolved. My guess is new visitors to Corfu this year wont be going back after seeing all the piles of rubbish. View Topic:

I am getting worried about what the situation will be like by September. I keep seeing posts about the north of the island but haven't seen anything about the Messonghi to Psarras area. I would love to know how bad it is around here. I am concerned about the smell and the health implications of piles of rubbish sitting about in the heat for so long.

Hiya Alleykat, Firstly, I have never had a bad meal in Messonghi, most taverna s are of a similar standard and prices. My favourites though are Minore, excellent menu, and Haris & Family will make you really welcome. Korali, on the way down to the beach heading from Minore is excellent value for money, looks more like a cafe but is good for any meals all day. Next to Korali, the Seaside Snack bar is a lovely place to relax, and the kids can still be on the beach in front. Bacchus Taverna, also on the beach is a cut above the rest but more expensive. For trips out there is Messonghi Travel Centre, where you can book various excursions or walk by the river and you can book boat trips directly with the Captains. There is a bus service into Corfu Town also from Messonghi. Some nice walks in the area if the kids are up for it! You will find that all the locals in the village are so friendly and helpful. Any specific questions, just ask away! Where are you staying? Jackie

I have been looking a lot at spreading my wings lately, and Kassiopi is really one of only a couple of places I think that I would like the feel of. May get there someday!! Have a great time, Jackie

Been trying lately to think of a topic to post about & hopefully get people chatting. I have just answered a question on another forum regarding the little rowing boat that ferries people from Messonghi Beach Hotel side of the river over to the village. It's going on for 30 years since I was first in Messonghi, think it was one drachma per person then to go across! Anyone remember so far back, and the elderly chap who used to row across? He had the most deep, gravelly voice I have ever heard. Used to keep all his coins under a piece of carpet in the bottom of the boat as I remember! Jackie

Agree with you there Lily's Gran, either no response or answering a question from a first time poster who doesn't even bother to say thank you. Not just on this forum, as you say. I had a long break from Messonghi due to circumstances, so could no longer offer up to date advice, although I did browse on here regularly. That is why I started to join in with the games. Nice to see a few posts now! Jackie

Hi Corfusun58, The site does seem exceptionally quiet, hopefully it will get busier. Like you, I also love to read whats happening on the island when we are not there. We don't really know Messonghi very well. We usually stay somewhere on the north-east coast, but we did travel all round the island when we stayed on Corfu for three months each year, way back in 2006, 2007 and 2008 .... our retirement gift to ourselves!!! I remember liking Messonghi very much, even though it was a cloudy day in November! Lets hope someone will post news of what has been happening.

Just back from Messonghi yesterday, originally booked for June but had to cancel unfortunately, but managed to grab a week. One of the lovely things about Messonghi is that nothing ever changes too much. Same lovely people with a few new additions. Amazingly, after 6 years they all remembered me. In fact, I was well and truly told off by Victor's daughter Angela, demanding to know where I had been all this time! They have made a good job of the new Barino Bar, was pleasantly surprised. George looks well, and I do like the new look Timeout. Seaside Bar still popular, new faces running it for me but still so friendly, and I never get tired of that view! Stayed at the Aquarius which has a lovely pool area, so handy for everything and the staff are lovely. They seem to have sorted out the sunbed issues on the beach, and there were plenty available down by Seaside and To Meraki without feeling too overcrowded. The only thing about the beach though is the very poor state of the boardwalk after Seaside up to Christina, it was a bit hazardous in places and would be better taken away altogether rather than left as it is. I have read a lot about the rubbish issues on Corfu lately, was pleasantly surprised to find the village itself was spotless. Weather was very " hit & miss ", but mostly good. Clouds and cooler in the morning, but that gave me the chance to have a few pleasant walks without the heat of the afternoon, perfect! All in all, a nice relaxing week and so glad I went. Jackie

Hi Sue I only reserved a seat out 2A left side and not one back just priority boarding. I always try to get a left hand/side seat out as I know the flight path (nearly always) so I can look out the window and see Petriti (sometimes) but always Messonghi/Moraitika/Benitses going into the airport . On the way back any seat will do (sad)

Well, we had a great time in Corfu in 2016, visiting for a few days in May, 3 weeks in August/September, and a few days in October. We stayed in Messonghi this year for 3 nights, and visited lots of areas in the South. It’s quite astonishing how different the South of the island is to the North (at least to us). We enjoyed our stay in the South (especially Lefkimmi), but we now know that the North is our home, so to speak. Highlights this year were finally finding the waterfall near Nymfes and having a dip, my wife and 2 girls going on a jet ski in Agios Stephanos, having a couple of lazy and long lunches at the fabulous Binilikia in Petalia with good friends and a great host in Katerina, and my personal favourite, the Corfu beer festival. So, we have already booked our flights for 2017, with a week in May, 2 weeks in July/August and 5 nights in October (that one without the kids). Can’t wait to be back on the island, especially to see our friends Claire and Andy who have now made the move out there and have a wonderful house, in a great location. Here’s to 2017 being a really prosperous year for Corfu, it’s inhabitants and all who visit her. Merry Christmas one and all View Topic:

We are thinking of trying somewhere different in Corfu for 2017 for a family holiday. Looking for a resort with a nice sandy beach we usually go to Messonghi and love it but that is just the 2 of us and can cope with the beach there, it isn't very nice and just doesn't seem to be getting looked after anymore but ok for us but next year taking family and grandchild so want a nice beach. Can anyone advise me on the resort we will be going 1st week September will it be busy quiet or just nice and looking for accommodation which is near to the beach and any with pools so we have best of both worlds. We are going to Messonghi in June as I've said earlier love the place and the people are just so friendly it's like going to second home. Looking forward to some information on St George South no matter how small anything that will help me choose well. Thank you. View Topic:

Hi Shakespearstar, no not disappointed we loved Paxos and will return in a couple of years but I did think the people definitely were not as friendly as lots of other Greek islands I have visited. We stayed in Gaios and had a fantastic 10 days, we visited anti Paxos where we had a lovely lunch we also went by bus to Loggos and Lakka and had a lovely lunch we also went to Mogonissi twice had lovely lunches but the service or the friendliness was not what we have experienced in other Greek islands. We ate out for 10 nights in Gaios and to be honest I really missed fresh vegetables like we normally get in Corfu but it was chips 90% of the time a couple of nights we had rice with whatever we ordered. Gaios itself was fantastic to wander round watch all the different yachts come in had some lovely shops and is a place we will visit again but food wise Messonghi in Corfu to name but one beats it hands down and I don't mean the all inclusive Messonghi Beach hotel I mean the little local tavernas in Messonghi village. I think maybe Loggos and Lakka will be friendlier and offer a better service and food after reading other reviews online.

Hi Janpan Yes she is very helpful. There is also Captain Homer tours who has an office round the corner from Messonghi Travel and others on the river so you will be spoilt for choice. You can do a trip to Paxos but it is by ferry, you are picked up around 8am in Messonghi and took to the Ferry. Paxos is lovely we are staying there for 10 days this year really looking forward to it. There is a night trip also to Corfu Town which is also very nice. As I say you are spoilt for choice, let me know how you get on.

We are staying in Coyevinas, in the north of the island, in June but quite fancy a trip over to Sivoto, somewhere we haven't been in all the years we have been in Corfu! Does anyone know how we can find out the days and times of the trips from Messonghi as we would rather not turn up and find we are on the wrong day, or worst still, just missed the boat!? Thanks. Last year the beach at Messonghi had over flowing bins and was not kept clean does anyone know if this will be the case this year? I understand it is the responsibility of the persons who has sunbeds on the beach to keep there area clean well, that wasn't the case for the stretch from seaside bar to Christina's. Plus all the boards on the beach were broken and very dangerous to walk along, also the boards along by Dionysos were broken. The changing room was all smashed up in May but was rectified when we went back towards the end of the season. It is a great shame the beach is not kept nice when Messonghi is such a wonderful resort and attracts visitors back year after year, you would think some pride would be taken of the beach.

I've stayed at the Christina a number of times twice with my father (90) and the beds did not bother us! Look at the Rossis in Messonghi? In Messonghi there are a number of good apartments Memories, Seaside Snack bar (upstairs). As I said look at Trip Advisor. Gerry

I second everything Gerry said. There is another lovely place called Notos Beach further on from Petriti, the beach on the right has lovely gardens with hammocks spread around, a taverna and the sea is shallow and calm with canoes, body boards etc use for free. The kids would love it, you can get Christos boat there from the Messonghi river for a lovely boat trip day out that isnt too long.

Hi Gerry, sorry, yes I mean summer 2016. I have looked online, Delphina Hotel looks lovely, but any booking sites all quote half board/AI and we only want room only or B&B Messonghi Beach hotel is again half board AI - def not doing either - it also looks a bit big, and as we don't have children, it's probably more suited to families. 3 stars Hotel looks nice, but the reviews of the very nearby Golden Beach bar and music blaring until late concerns me Christina Hotel, location wise looks ideal, but reviews say the beds are very uncomfortable (a lot of reviews saying this) So any recommendations for a hotel very near the beach, not affected by late night bars, and that has comfortable beds would be great View Topic:

Annie you said "this year"? do you mean 2016? Why don't you Google both Moraitika/ Messonghi ? or even check Trip adviser! I could recommend hotels etc. in both but we do have favourites? Come back to me and I'll see what I can assist in. Gerry View Topic:

Hi Annie. Moraitika is a good resort as it is on the "road side" for bars/tavernas and the beach is sandy and shallow. There are a number of good tavernas but we all have our favourites. Just over the river is Messonghi which is a little quieter but also very good for bars/tavernas! I've been going for over 25 years and never tire of it. Gerry

Hi. We are booked for our usual 3 week break in Acharavi
next August, but this year, we have decided to have a short
break (3 nights, 4 days)
in Messonghi too. We have booked the Aquarius Apartments and
have
never really explored the South of the Island. So my
questions are:
1.
Which tavernas/bars are a must visit in
Messonghi/the surrounding area?
2.
Which places/beaches are a must see whilst
there?
We are a family of 4 with a 3 and 12 year old, and we will
have a hire car so travelling
around the South of the Island is no problem.
All recommendations are much appreciated.
Thanks for reading. GJJW

Hi Jackie, most of the Greek Orthodox churches have Easter services. Moraitika is nice, up in the old village. They hold a service Easter Saturday evening, then people congregate outside the church. Benitses is nice too. They have singing and fireworks. If you are on the beach at midnight in Messonghi or Moraitika, you can see the fireworks in Corfu town.

Hi Olympus , Would you know if there are any Easter Services (Orthodox ) in Messonghi/Moraitika? Apart from the Catholic church on the main road, the only other one I have noticed is the little church on the way up to Hlomatiana village. Thankyou, Jackie

We got back on the 20th September and we have never known it so hot. I think the weather has changed this week though. We had a couple of walks up to the Fishermans Haunt during the afternoon, it's lovely. Had some lovely meals in Messonghi and it was nice to see Marilena's open because it hadn't opened when we were there in May. We are back in June next year, can't wait.

We are just home from another brillant time in our favourite place Corfu, we found Moraitika and Messonghi to be very busy this year, which is very good the shops were better stocked than ever and the bars and resturants all still serving fab food and busy. Just love sitting on Messonghi beach looking over at Fishermans Haunt and along the coast line, cant wait for next year.

Yes I agree there are "two" parts of Messonghi, one by the river and one a bit further down by the cross roads and the supermarket. It has a more "quaint" feel to it not as "dare I say it" as tourist as Moraitika? but that is my thought! You will have a good time I'm sure. Gerry

Bob D, As Gerry has said have a walk round to Messonghi walk past the Messonghi Beach Hotel and take one of the turnings on the left, probably be better not to take the turning after the Messonghi Beach Hotel but the one after that and you will come to lovely Messonghi, make sure you walk right down onto the beach and along the boards. I'm sure you'll love it.

We went to mainland Greece in Mid July the heat was unbearable so looking forward to a manageable temperature in September. Here in England we have had strange weather, 4 seasons in one day...

Hi, we`ve been back 2 weeks now, but it was getting quite busy by the time we left. Drove through Messonghi one evening and was quite suprised at how many people were about. It looked busier than we have seen it for the last couple of years! Restaurants and bars all looked to have a lot of people in.. Same thing in Moraitika..

Hello Alan We have been going to Messonghi for the past 5 years and stay in Messonghi village which is across the river from the Messonghi Beach hotel. The hotel you mention is no longer there or if it is we have not noticed it. Was the hotel on the beach or the road behind the beach?? Messonghi is a wonderful little place with many lovely tavernas serving good food with very friendly locals. As I have said we have been going for the past 5 years but many people we have met during our stays there have been going for over 20 years so that in itself speaks volumes.

Hello all, We stayed in Corfu back in 1982 in a hotel called the Melissa Beach. It was just across the river from the Messonghi Beach Hotel. I cannot imagine that the Melissa Beach Hotel is still there but anyone familiar with the name might know what it's like there now? I remember we used to pay the local lads 10 drachma to be ferried across the river in a rowing boat. Very dodgy on the way back after a few ouzos! We recently went on a cruise starting out from Corfu town but didn't have the time to explore. We will probably visit next year as I would love to go back there. It's been 33 years and long, long overdue ... Thanks for any info, Alan

Hi I have been going to Messonghi for 15years and love it, the prices in the bars/tavernas are excellent, my husband and I get a two course meal with wine for approx €20/25 euros, the beaches are lovely and the people superb and so welcoming. We stay at the Kerkyra Island apartments, we book through Olympic and the rooms are really clean, spacious and excellent for self catering, they also have a lovely clean swimming pool. Hope you enjoy whatever you decide to book.
