Moraitika and Messonghi
Messonghi is a small peaceful resort situated about 1Km. south of the resort of Moraitika. It is quiet and peaceful with the majority of facilities all within 100mtrs. of the beach. The terrain is relatively flat with no steep hills to climb on those hot summer days. Olive groves populate almost every scrap of unused land. The roads in and around the village are not major through roads and therefore traffic is relatively infrequent.
There are plenty of restaurants, tavernas, bars and shops to suit every taste.

Who is the Resort for
The Moraitika & Messonghi Beach Resort is ideal for families and couples seeking a laid back relaxing holiday in a quiet Greek village atmosphere with all amenities locally available. However if it's fast nightlife you are after the busier resort of Moraitika is only a 15-minute walk or short taxi ride away.
|
The Beach
Type
Sandy, with unobstructed views of mainland Greece to the east and south and Albania to the north. Magical in the evenings especially during the full moon.
Sunbeds
Plenty of sun beds and umbrellas for hire along the length of the beach.
Facilities
Changing rooms and showers available and plenty of tavernas along the beach where toilets can be used, it is always nice to buy a drink when you use the facilities.
Child Suitability
The water is normally calm and deepens gradually.
Accessibility
Access to the beach from the main crossroads in the village is flat, but from other locations a couple of steps might have to be negotiated.
Cleanliness and Urchins
The beach is clean and the water is crystal clear - ideal for snorkeling. There are no urchins on the main beach but if snorkeling further along coast you can come across them from time to time, harmless unless you stand on them.
|
Places of Interest
Chlomos or Hlomos
An old traditional Greek village up on the side of a steep hill about 4km. from Messonghi. The views are spectacular of Southern Corfu and the islands of Paxos and Antipaxos can be seen on a clear day.
The church provides the best vantage point. The ascent and descent are very steep, so unless you are a regular 'hill walker' be careful.
|
Places Nearby
Lake korision
A saltwater lagoon on the west coast opposite Messonghi. A haven for wildlife. Egrets, Terrapins, Kingfishers etc. can be seen there
On the way to lake Korission you pass the well preserved ruins of a Large Byzantian fortress. Well worth a visit.
Lefkimmi salt pans
Disused Venetian saltpans, some restoration is taking place at present. Boat trips visit here regularly. ( From the Messonghi river.)

Hotel Christina
Has a nice restaurant on the seafront, the staff are very friendly and children can play on the beach or use the pool table while you have a leisurely after dinner drink or two.
Vine Garden
Friendly, family run restaurant and bar. Aptly named in that almost the whole restaurant is cloaked in thriving grape vines. An ideal place to hide from the midday sun and cool enough in the evening to be comfortable.
Memories Restaurant
Another seafront restaurant down by the jetty. Ideal place for a romantic meal with the water lapping at the shore beside you.
|

|
Things to do
1. Do nothing - believe me its very easy!
2. Visit a local taverna and order a frappe and do nothing. (slightly more strenuous).
3. Take the bus into Corfu Town. A visit to St.Spiridon's Church is a must which is in the heart of the old town with lots of small shops to keep you occupied for hours.
4. Go for a walk along the coast road towards Boukari ( about 4km.) - very quiet and peaceful. There are a number of tavernas and snack bars en route where you could stop off for refreshments or lunch.
5. Take a boat trip to the south or over to mainland Greece and visit the caves, the blue lagoon etc. Trips depart from the Messonghi river or the jetty.
6. Drive or crawl !!! up to Chlomos and spend an hour or two wandering the quaint narrow streets of a traditional Greek village.

James Bond enthusiasts often travel to Jimmy's cafe in Pagi from all over the island to see where the collision with the bus was filmed. Jimmy or Eleni his wife will show anyone a short video of the scenes.
Last week when we visited a Belgian couple who are staying at Messonghi in he south of the island told me they had driven all the way there deliberately to find the '007 cafe'!!!

Hi John,
My girlfriend (now my wife) and I did exactly the same in 1977 but in July/August time, we too travelled the whole of the island on a rented Vespa. We hadn't been back since then, and returned to Corfu in 2010 and stayed in Paleokastritsa. We originally stayed in Messonghi back in 1977 and so when we returned we were both keen to see how things had changed in Messonghi and the rest of the island. In a car this time, we did most of the places we went to before and fell in love with the place all over again, so much so we returned to Messonghi in 2011. We go again in July 2012 and stay in Boukari.
I can honestly say that there have been some obvious changes throughout Corfu, but generally it still maintains it's wonderful Greek charm and friendliness.
I know I will upset a lot of people by saying this, but some of the larger resorts have been spoilt and lost a little bit of that charm. I was disappointed with Benitses, Sidari and Kassiopi (except the harbour) and from how I remember them back in the 70's I thought they had changed for the worse.
As for your picture, I am convinced we also stopped off there for 'refreshments' on our travels. Can you be more specific with the location?
Regards

Hi, yes it is possible to fish in the river. No-one will stop you from doing it. There are some really big fish in there, but the water is not always very clean! To be honest, I think its` best to find a nice quiet spot on the beach & fish in the sea. Try a walk through Messonghi village, down towards Boukari. Lots of quiet little coves down there & plenty fish to catch. Hope this helps.. View Topic:

Have you thought about the south of the island for a good change . ... some really good resorts
Messonghi Moratika Ille think you will find 4 star hotels for a cheaper price than the north of the island for 3 star.

Thanks for the advice everyone, will stick with Sea View in Nissaki but am toying with the idea of Angelicas over in Agios Gordis as well, so now it's between those two.
The trouble is every place is unique in Corfu and I love so many places. In the summer we are going to San Stefanos for 2 weeks as we loved the place we stayed at so much, then we are going down to Messonghi for the last week which will be our 4th visit to Kerkyra Island apartments.
They are in such a beautiful place and easily accessable by bike or car or even walking to so many of the lesser visited southern towns and beaches.
Sorry for rambling on, what I was going to say was May half term week is when I try somewhere new and do a bit of walking , I have never stayed in Nissaki but stayed in Agios Gordis twice at Sebastians, but didn't walk to Pendati or anywhere as it was August and too hot.
So what's it to be?
I love the East coast and I also love the West coast.....as Harry Hill would say!!!
