Gouvia Corfu

Gouvia Overview

Gouvia is a family resort with several hotels and apartments. There are 3 beaches (fine shingle) offering excellent, safe, swimming. The lane running through Gouvia offers a wide range of tavernas and bars.

Back to Top of Gouvia PageThe Beach

Type

Fine shingle.

Sun Beds

Available for hire and best for comfort on the pebbles.

Facilities

There are showers on the beach.

Child Suitability

As with many Corfiot beaches it is child friendly but supervision is required. The centre of the beach is safer than the sides - boat hire and motor sports take place to the sides.

Accessibility

Very accessible from either end of the village. A circular walk can be made to and from the beach on a tarmac surface.

Cleanliness and Urchins

The beach is clean and only a mile or so from the Blue Flagged beach at Kontokali. Due to the large bay shape and the shingle beach it is sometimes covered in a little seaweed.

Head south along the shore from Gouvia beach and you will pass a small jetty, before reaching within 100 metres of this, on the right, is what remains of an age-old tradition. Here are sited a number of stone arches that once formed part of a Venetian shipyard. If you wonder why they chose here forget any maritime arguments and just look at the view.

The lively resort of Ipsos is about ten minutes by car. Although Dasia about a 10-15 minute walk away is not without some excellent bars and smaller clubs. The exclusive resort of Kommeno is just round the headland and the famous 'Church Island' is worth a visit.

Opposite Gouvia beach you will see the white painted building that is Ipapanti Church.
Look out for celebrations for its Saints Days on 2nd February and 17th July.
It is possible to walk to the church but you do have to walk for a period on the main road.

If you have made it as far as the shipyard a few hundred meters more and you will be at the more modern marina. This lies on the edge of Kontokali a village that borders Gouvia and has bars, restaurants, some accommodation and a Blue Flag beach, one of only 26 designated as such during 2002 in Corfu.

Look carefully enough and you will find the ruins of a castle that reinforces the Venetian links in this area. He was a knight who fought with the Venetians against the Turks.

Gouvia is only a short drive from Corfu town situated along the main Paleocastritsa road, on the right hand side. Take the right hand turn at the traffic lights, opposite Diellas supermarket. It is clearly signposted.

The hotel is sited just behind Gouvia Beach.

There are 27 rooms pleasantly furnished and decorated and with sea views.

This Hotel has a restaurant and bar sited adjacent to Gouvia beach that is open to non-residents. It is an ideal location to pop into while spending time on the beach, as long as you remember to wait the obligatory period between eating and swimming (at least 90 minutes).

Even though Gouvia is not a major water sports resort there is the possibility of an active day on the water.

Billy offers speedboat and jet ski hire. He also offers a sailing trip to Taverna Agni with an overnight in the bay. More details: Billy's Boat Hire Gouvia

Back to Top of Gouvia PageTavernas in Gouvia

There are around 30 eating places in Gouvia. In addition to Greek there is English, Italian or Chinese cuisine; but if you want to get the full Corfiot flavour you do need to try Greek dishes.
From the main road, entering opposite Diellas, you have a very tiny kind of roundabout with a choice of roads to the left or to the right.

Taverna Aries

This taverna is down to your left off the path and seems to be fashioned from the space between two buildings. Don't be put off by its temporary looking nature. If you want authentic Greek food that makes you want to eat there again, (only after a good days rest to get over the portions), look no further. To make it particularly Greek don't go for a traditionally English three course meal, order lots of starters and everyone dig right in - make your very own meze. Catch them on the right night and the brothers or their sons will dance for you too.
Branching right takes you after 500 metres:
To the right, if its Pizzas you are after, try Bongos immediately on your left and up a couple of steps, mind these on your way out if you have had a 'merry' evening.

Taverna Vegina

Just past the half a tree in some ones yard and still on the road you will find this taverna. There is plenty of room with the benefit of being able to people watch while you eat a leisurely meal. Plenty of options including its own specialties. The "kleftico" came in paper parcels.

Poco Loco

When you tire of gorgeous Greek grub or you feel a cold coming on grab some Mexican marvels in this place.

Back to Top of Gouvia PageShopping in Gouvia

Gouvia is filled with local shops, small supermarkets and tourist shops, in which you can find all the daily needed items.

Supermarkets

The 'Diellas' supermarket across the main road is a large hypermarket. This 'Italian' supermarket, is a discount hypermarket, and is useful if you are planning to stock up and eating in for some of the time.
The super market is on the main Paleokastritsa road, just opposite the Gouvia junction.
The entrance to Diellas is up the slope next to it, around 100 metres and on the right, in front of a car parking area (effectively the opposite side of the building to the main road).
800 metres or so further south from Diellas on the main road, (heading in the Corfu Town direction), is another popular supermarket Alpha Beta or AB. It is on the same side as Diellas and is opposite a lane that will take you into Kontokali, past the Navigators Bar and Cava off-license. AB is slightly smaller than Diellas but has a neat lift for customers to reach its second floor. I found it concentrated on more purely Greek products, if there is such a thing.

Back to Top of Gouvia PageUseful Gouvia Information

Exchange/Money

Gouvia has several cash machines located in the centre of the village. There is also an ATM located in Marina as well as in front of the AB-Supermarket.
There are also many places to change travellers cheques and foreign currency throughout the resort.

Public Swimming Pools in Gouvia

Yes - the Lagoon is a stunning pool complex near the Louis Kerkyra Hotel.
This is a pay as you enter leisure and water park. If you tire of entertaining the children around the hotel pool, you might like to consider taking a stroll through town and spend some time in the Lagoon.

Telephone and Post Box

All hotels have telephones with direct dialing to the UK, as do the majority of the Tavernas/Restaurants/Bars, at a small charge. There are also a couple of internet cafes in Gouvia.
There are several post boxes along the main strip as well as in the Marina Gouvia.

Children's Facilities

With the exception of the beaches there is not much activity for children. However there is a public playground located in the Marina. Also the Aqualand Park can be arranged through your travel rep, or the local Tourist Shop.

Disabled Facilities

Most Tavernas and Restaurants have disabled access, if not we notice that the majority of staff will help with the access to their premises.

Clinic

There is a 24 hour clinic at the end of the main strip of Gouvia.
