Back to Top of Agni Bay PageAgni Bay

Agni Bay is home to Taverna Agni - this website's creator. Agni means un-spoilt in Greek and this describes our bay perfectly. Situated on the North East Coast set amongst the olive groves growing either side of the bay. It is not a 'resort' as there are just three Tavernas (each with their own jetty for mooring up to) and a couple of local buildings. The bay is reached mainly by little rented motor boats. Yachts and large motor cruisers also frequent this little bay. The road down to the bay is very narrow and winding for those brave enough to drive down! This year the road has been resurfaced, making it easier. The drive is worth the effort though as the bay is beautiful, and crystal clear waters await. Across the water are beautiful views of the Albanian mountains with the town of Zara below and often in the evening stunning sunset refections can be seen.

The above video gives a flavour of Taverna Agni, Agni bay.

Back to Top of Agni Bay PageWho is the Resort for

People who are looking for peace and tranquillity. Agni bay is a traditional Greek Bay and remains as it was years ago. Children and teenagers may find this bay a little quiet. Adults looking to get away from it all in a true traditional Greek bay would love it at Agni.

Back to Top of Agni Bay PageThe Beach

Type

Small Pebbles with sand patches.

Sunbeds:

All the Tavernas provide sunbeds free to their customers. If these are all taken there are plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas for hire from Spiros.

Child Suitability

The bay is very friendly and safe as it is away from roads. The water does tend to shelve quite deeply in parts. The far end of the beach would be a safer option for children swimming as there is a lot of water traffic moving around the jetties.

Accessability

If you are walking through the olive groves from the nearby resorts make sure you wear covered shoes as there are some rocks to climb across and undergrowth. The drive down to the bay is extremely steep but once there it is totally flat.

Cleanliness and Urchings

Although Agni bay is not a blue flag beach it is cleaned every day and there is no litter. On the main beach area there are no urchins but there are some on the rock at the edges. Be careful if swimming and walking on the rocky areas. Sea shoes (jellies) are available from the nearby supermarkets in Kalami.

Back to Top of Agni Bay PagePlaces of Interest

Agni itself is worth a visit being that it has virtually unchanged in the last 100 or so years unlike many of the other resorts on the island. Apart from the obvious increase in visitors. Nearby is the chapel of 'Prospero Cell' as mentioned by Laurence Durrell. Below the chapel is a small underwater cave - the kids love it. The next small bay to Agni is Yaliskari - which is completely undeveloped and has excellent swimming and rock jumping areas!

Back to Top of Agni Bay PagePlaces Nearby

Nearby Yaliscary 'deserted' bay is excellent for snorkeling:
Kalami is a 20 min walk and the Nissaki Beach Hotel a 25 min walk via coastal paths.

Back to Top of Agni Bay PageHow to get there by Car

Follow the main coastal road from Corfu town up to the North East of the island, As you near the North East watch out for the winding narrow roads, mirrors are conveniently placed on the worst bends. Pass through Ipsos, Barbati and Nissaki, as you pass the hotel Nissaki Beach on your right, there is a sharp bend bearing to your left, it is on this bend that you need to turn right to Agni, look out for the sign and the three Tavernas boards. Be careful as you drive down the steep and winding road as it is also very narrow in parts. Go slowly! There is a carpark at the bottom of the road.

Back to Top of Agni Bay PageTavernas at Agni Bay

There are three Tavernas spaced out along Agni bay. Ours of course is the Taverna Agni.

Taverna Agni

Taverna Agni is family run and serves an excellent choice of traditional Greek cuisine. Taverna Agni is located at the quiet and un-spoilt Agni Bay. Just come on in and check it out yourself: Taverna Agni

Back to Top of Agni Bay PageWhat's There

Agni is a bay rather than a resort. You can find all the amenities of a resort such as supermarkets, exchange, boat rental, water sports, telephone and swimming pools at the nearby Kalami. This is just a short walk away through Yaliscari bay and across the headland.

Last year we flew from EM with Jet2, absolutely fantastic, no problems whatsoever. This year went through the booking proceedure on Jet2, absolutely great UNTIL..for 4 adults and one toddler Β£100 in booking and debit card charges, so chaged to BMI Baby. Angry
I know, LOL no don't laugh, but at the time, great times, out at 06.50 back with return aircraft at 13.00, booking fees yes but not a rip-off like Jet2. Now out at 13.15 back at 19.25.

As all airlines seem to be affected I thought that the problem maybe at the Greek end, maybe excessive landing charges between certain hours, I don't know.

Just looked at Jet2 for 2013 and there is quite a price hike. Hopefully Easyjet will expand their services to  Corfu, as got good flights in August and at a sensible price. Pity they pulled out of EM.

I've already posted this on the main Corfu message board, but as our main interest is Paleo, here goes just for us!!
For those that are regulars to Corfu, [and those of you that will be new to the island], I'm sure you will agree, the road maps of the island leave a bit to be desired, however, help is at hand from Stephan Jaskulowski whose hand finished map is great to have with you. At Β£4.99 + Β£2.00 p&p they are very good value and all profits go to the Agni Animal Welfare Fund.
Stephan can be contacted by e-mail; - thecorfumap(at)ntlworld.com
I've just received mine after a recommendation by another regular and am happy to pass that recommendation on.

Update from yesterday (Tuesday) Day 8 and I have completed 109,518 and I am 60th out of 584 competitors :)  I have now reached the Indian state of Bihar. I do wish I really was in India as the weather here in Bournemouth - cold and wet - can make it an effort to get out there and boost the steps.  I went for a really long walk on Sunday and the weather up on the headland was warm but windy ..... when I got back I realised my nose was sunburnt and I look like Rudolph at the moment Clown

Hi Sarah,
Check out the post from Kastrofal at 1.08pm in the following topic.

"National Express do a direct route through to Manchester Airport for Β£25 return when bought online. As it's a direct route (after Newcastle, Park Lane and Middlesborough), it only take 3.5 hours so that is something else I will look into."

Thought that it may be of help to you, perhaps negate an overnight stay.

The Euro notes and coins from one euro-zone county are legal tender in all the euro-zone countries that uses them.

If they are not then there's going to be a lot of unhappy Greeks who have shifted their Euros out of Greece into Germany and other euro-zone countries over the last three years.Wink

We are already having a wonderful time just thinking of coming 'home' to Greece. Been a couple of years since and have missed it a lot.   Been a long time since at Corfu too so will be lovely to go back and see another part of the Island. Very looking forward to it and sure we will love it no matter where we are.   You can change the accommodation but the amazing people and scenery and food etc never changes. Love it.   Tongue

I've got 75 euros left over from our trip at Easter which we bought here in the UK and they all start with X.  Made me start to wonder where the Euros we buy in the UK come from and is there a chance when we buy them here for our trip in June, could we end up with Greek Euros? Ermm

The AI option suits us best this year due to daughter. Have done both AI and SC in last couple of years. I do like SC best as feel it is better for choice and the local area but simply put the AI saves us quite a bit of money and also means that the wee one still gets her kids pool, kids clubs, friends to play with (easier to make friends when everyone is in hotel more), ice cream, juice, food (if she doesn't like it we simply get more so better for getting her to try new things) etc etc. Lets face it our holidays are all more about her needs now than our own.

Still do like to get out and about every day for a walk though and always try and have a few lunches and a few evenings where we leave the hotel and go out and try restaurants/bars in the local area.  Add to that a couple of days at the beach too. Oh and don't forget we have a toddler walking with us so need be close to things for her wee legs. So the resort is important to us for that reason.  I liked this hotel due to their facilities (and views for a wee wine on the balcony at night) and the proximity to the town/beach area so would be a shame to not go there.

Still, if need be then will have to and am open minded to where we go as long as the kids club is good.  After all, Happy Child = Happy everyone!!! Tongue Was just worried that the hotel had shut due to the economy and not being able to make enough money.
Bella Vista is well worth the climb Malcy - it definitely does what it says on the tin Big smile  I think you're right about the wading in, all the boats seem to moor offshore at Voutoumi - in fact I seem to recall that there's a line of buoys strung across the bay to indicate no boats beyond a certain point.
You are absolutely right Elaine (as usual Tongue), the climb is well worth it for the view, the Taverna and all that goes with it!
Cant believe it took us 20 years to finally go there - and all because we took a couple of friends with us and they persuaded us. It was their first visit to Paxos and they did more in 2 weeks than we have probably done over all our visits.

I am definitely into Paxos chill; eating, drinking and people watching

Malcy
You do need to moor offshore and swim/wade in. There were no buoys there in June but it is expected (and frowned upon if you dont) - its common sense and much fairer to other beach and water users not to have to negotiate boats and running outboards. You can, if its clear, drop off and pick up your passengers on the small 'jetty' at the northerly side of the beach. At least that way, only you get a soaking  LOL

Only 33 days 22 hrs 58 mins until we arrive (unless the Igoumenitsa ferry changes times)

Hopefully it will be sorted out before we get there and if not then guess it will be an adventure being moved to a different hotel.  Just got to make sure they pick a good one! Wink

Similar thing happened before to us in Egypt.  They had overbooked the hotel we were due to stay in so moved us to the sister hotel right next door which was a star rating higher and we still got to use all the facilities at the original hotel we booked! Smile Happy Days.

Just think of the weight saveing in your luggage when you just stick your Kindle in your pocket.
Bob
I am thinking about exactly that Bob, especially after seeing one at the weekend and realising just how small & lightweight they actually are.  For the last couple of years, mainly due to all the charter airlines getting stingy with the included luggage allowance, I've only taken one book out with me and made use of the 'libraries' most accommodations & tourist offices offer.  This has encouraged me to read types of book I might not have chosen otherwise.
I was thinking that with a Kindle I can still do that and also have more books I've actively chosen to hand.

Thank you to everyone for your replies.Big smile

Correct, no bank, not even an ATM.  There are three tourist offices in Kalami that offer currency exchange and you can also do exchange at reception at the A & A.  The exchange rate on offer in Kalami is not always the same as in the larger resorts.  We wouldn't drive or get the bus to another resort just to change money but if we are visiting one of the larger resorts we'd probably exchange whilst we were there.

Someone educate me please.

I'm beginning to like the idea of having a Kindle, to read Sidney Larkin's book re Kalami for one.  I was having a look on Amazon the other day and have been left somewhat confused about which of the 4 versions currently available would be right for me.
We don't have a wifi internet connection at home so would the basic model work or not?
Do I need to upgrade to a wifi connection or just buy one of the Kindles with inbuilt wifi?
There is a Kindle with a keyboard - what is that for?
There is the basic model then the Kindle touch then the keyboard model so if the basic model is not touch, does not have a keyboard and doesn't need to be connected to a PC how do you download to it/access books to download to it?
Can anyone help?

Hi Fletcher12

Did what you read say take a small amount of currency or to take your currency in small denominations - €5 & €10 notes rather than €50 & €100?  There have been posts about difficulties with travellers cheques and the Greeks being reluctant to take cards.  If you are going soon and usually take euros cash then I would stick with what you usually do.  We are not going until September and are waiting to see what the situation is nearer that time.

And the on the boat scene at the beginning of the movie was shot in the Corfu channel, Kalami can be seen in the background.

We've had a couple of lunches (Three Brothers I think it was, sat on the verandah out the back) up at Afionas but not been up there in the evening so far.  The views are lovely during the day, the sunset must be quite something.

Hi

Thanks for replying.  I just noticed it last night and wondered what was going on. Good to know it's not planned to be permanent.  Big smileBeer

Just need to keep an eye on it and watch out for more reviews. Shall let you know if I hear anything in meantime as we are due to go before August. Especially with the Euro situation ongoing as well. Who knows what will all happen in Greece with that.

Arriving in Kassiopi on Saturday for 2 weeks, and a little concerned by reports advising not to bring your holiday money on a card, as Corfu ATMs may have no cash in them!!!

As we have already loaded a FairFX Mastercard with the bulk of our holiday Euros - we are obviously hoping this is an exaggeration.Confused

Anyone in Kassiopi at the moment can put our minds at ease!!

Also - how many ATMs (Banks?) are there in Kassiopi?

Cheers

Phil

Hi

Is there anyone who has been in Sidari recently or lives around there who could tell me if the Corfu Panorma is open? We are due to go there soon and saw a review on trip adviser from 05/05 where they said that the hotel closed 6 days before they were due to go. Not sure if this is a temporary situation due to work being done/refurbishment not being finished or more serious issues. Just wondered is someone would be able to shed some light for me please?

In the meantime all eyes are on the Euro and the holiday countdown on my calendar!! Big smile

Thanks
L

Hi all.
We were in Kalami 2 weeks ago stunning and great to see the locals clearing the beach, met some very nice people and walked miles along the coastline even saw the Agni Taverna! We hope to be settling in the area in 16 months so if anyone knows of any long term lease/rentals please let us know. Off to Amazon to look at the book looks great good luck with it.

The Long and winding road is nearly at an end!

Elliemay, while I agree with you about Diellas being OK for toiletries and not being more expensive you have to remember that not everyone is that close to one of their branches. For instance, We live almost 15 miles from our nearest one so we stock up when we pass one when going to other places. As many people don't hire a car it would need a day trip and a lot of time to get the shopping so I do believe it is good advice  to take a few with you if you are just going for a holiday.Embarrassed

Thanks All,
Thanks for all your info, very helpful. Decided to book a Taxi (booked with Alfa Taxis 56 Euros each way which works out at 11.25 each so not too bad really) to get on our way as quickly as possible, however would definitely try The Travel Corner in future if it is as quick as SusieB says.

Thanks again all, only 3 weeks on Thursday till we go, not that we are counting or anything.

Hi,
My absolute favourites are Agni Taverna for a really special meal. Roumelis near Nisakki for brilliant meze's. Bavias just into Sidari, near Diellas supermarket for authentic Greek food and hospitality. Pizza Romano, also in Sidari near the green by the church. Again, lovely Greek cuisine, amazing pizzas and Greek hospitality.
Must say though, that we eat regularly at the only taverna in our village, Mon Amour, or as known by the locals, Kokkinos. All the friends that we have taken there for a meal always want to go back. Say no more!!! Smile

Yesterday, on the BBC website,  I was reading about a 96 yr old gentleman in Wales who regularly attends his local Zumba class.  He's been dancing since he was 13 and finds Zumba a good, enjoyable way to keep fit.  He said he can do all the moves but not necessarily at the same speed as some of his classmates.

I am trying to get fit this summer and a friend has offered to give a Zuma Gold class once a week in Roda. She is fully qualified and has suggested the 'gold' class as I especially are not as fit and young as I used to be.

If you are interested please leave a message here and hopefully we can get this off the ground by the end of May. The price is 3 euro per 1 hour class, which will be on a Thursday morning at the Pegasus hotel.

Come one peepe, lets give it a go, after you can jump in the pool to cool off Wink

Anita

p.s. I gave up smoking in November and have put on a few pounds, hence would like to shift some weight and am not a mad fan of the gym and love to dance, so thought this would be fun LOL

Hi there and it is the end of day three.  I have now done 35,928 steps and I'm 77th out of 367 competitors.  So my daily average is 11,976 steps a day.  I have to do at least 10,000 steps a day to complete the challenge in the 6 weeks.  I know from the last challenge I did that the weekends I tend to push up the steps - the highest being about 28,000 in a day ... my poor legs.  On that challenge it was from Stockport to Bournemouth via London and I came in 4th, completing the challenge within 2 weeks instead of 4 Smile

So today I am walking through Shaanxi province of central China.  This was the eastern end of the silk road and in 1556 suffered the most devastating earthquakes in history.

Feel free to chat or ask questions ... you don't need to sponsor me .. it would just be nice to know I aint talking to myself haha.

I have limited knowledge on this subject but I will respond with what I know. Most of the Agni Team have Greek bank accounts so don't really use travellers cheques. I do know that a couple of years ago we took the grandchildren to Aqualand for 5 days as a treat and were picked up from the airport late evening by the aqualand bus and taken to our rooms.

The next day I got up and got the bus back into town leaving the others to enjoy Aqualand and then got a bus up to our house to pick up my car. Waiting at the same bus stop were an English couple who had brought trevellers cheques and has been unable to change them at Aqualand or the surrounding area so he had to get  into town to change them at a bank which also had a charge. As it was time consuming and costly he didn't want to go back again so he withdrew the whole ammount and so still finished up carrying total holiday money around in cash in his back pocket

I really don't know if he had been misinformed or what but I know that personally We have not used travellers cheques for over ten years wherever we have been in the world and also we have not used cheques in the UK for about the same amount of time.

The only thing that always works in Corfu is cash so always keep some of this with you.

I asked about Euro TCs, same answer!  I asked her why hasn't there been anything in the news about this - she didn't know.  Anyone else heard of this??  Looks like we'll be taking an extra suitcase for the spending money!!Shocked

Well having read various news print today I got to thinking Ermm
How many people still have Drachmas in jars, drawers, under the bed, hidden.
The euro hasnt been the greatest thing to enhance the Greek economy I remeber the my local kafeneon in the village still had his prices in drachmas with the euro converted to equivalant  price.
Everyone complained back then that the conversion rate looked bad, they had to accept it.
It was only when George, whose bar it was, did a refit on the bar that he took it down.(that was 3 years ago) that I think the locals accepted the euro was here to stay.
Well maybe the drachma may be back .... so go look where you put them.
In my heart I hope they dont lose the euro as the country isnt the only one thats got problems (wonder where my pesetas have gone) Wonder what others think?

But then we discovered Kalami- one look at that bay and you are drawn like a magnet!!

All you have to do is chill and relax-simple

The best 5 holidays we have ever had- a boat for the day- a car for 3 days- speedboat to Corfu town- walks to Agni,Koulura, etc

Checking out whose on the big boats!

Absolutley love it- and then eating your meals Shirley Valentine style at night- magical.

The superb view from your balcony- brilliant

Hi

Yes, I do drink the local water (although not that which comes directly from our sterna - but that's another story!).  The water can be high in minerals, but then, it does depend upon the area you are in and the source of the water.

It is said that the high mineral content can result in upset stomachs, although I haven't had a problem (yet).

There is another saying locally - that once you have taken a drink of the local water in Corfu, you will be hooked on the island for life.  So, that explains it, thenWink.
Deedee - the taverna at Imerolia is it the only one there or do you know the name please?
There is only the one taverna at Imerolia.  If you are coming from Kassiopi it is on the right down one of those short, steep slopes.

Happy eating, Deedee.  Big smile
The Euro is at a really good price just now. I'm not going to Corfu until September and am a bit sceptical about buying them as who knows what could happen with Greece and the Euro. Anyone have any advice???
We are also going to Corfu in September so are in the same quandry.  I heard on the BBC yesterday that the exchange rate is better than it has been for over 3 yrs so now is a good time to buy €. However the reverse of that is that it is a bad time to convert € back to Β£ and if Greece were to stop using € we might need to do that.  We have decided to wait until just before we go.  We might lose on the exchange rate but we might not and we'd rather take that chance than buy € now.

Thanks Graham.

I've just tried again and can now see 6 photos of new reception on their 'wall'.
I have been accepted as a 'friend' since my earlier attempt so I don't know if that has made the difference but I could see lot of other photos before, just not the reception ones.  Perhaps it was that I just didn't wait long enough for them to load.  Confused
Anyway, I've seen them now and it looks stunning!

I couldn't wait until September to see it so I've registered on Facebook and visited the Cocktails & Dreams page.  Saw lots of photos but none of new reception.  Can anyone suggest what I may be doing wrong?

More about styling & creating body for me rather than actually drying my hair.   I take my own travel hair dryer anyway as the ones the A & A provided were hard wired and I wanted more freedom of movement.  I don't know whether they still are hard wired?  Perhaps they are not, I haven't checked recently as I've got into the habit of taking my own.
In Lakones there is Boulis restaurnt with stunning views over Paleokastritsa.  It's traditional food similar to my first two choices but with the view!

David
Hi Wereangels

I have to second David's recommendation above.  Last year we were looking for somewhere in Lakones other than where the coach trips go (nothing against those establishments, just that we've been there, done that) and another site member recommended Boulis.  We enjoyed our first lunch there so much we drove over from Kalami twice more during our fortnight.

We also like Elizabeth's at Doukades, could sit outside there all day watching life come through the square whilst we eat.  One of the things we intended to do last year was go up there in the evening.  We didn't manage to fit it in so it's still on the to do list.  Two other places we tried for the first time last year and intend returning to were Mon Amour at Kavadades (inland from Sidari) where we had some really good rollo and the taverna at Imerolia which was on par with Taverna Agni price wise and was a lovely experience with the sea food, the setting & the view.

A few years ago we had a delicious, indulgent, sea food lunch at Akrogiali at St Georges North.  It was a bit hair raising to get there but the lunch was worth it.

Almost forgot George's on Almyros beach.  Another place we say we'll get to in the evening but haven't done yet.  We didn't eat there last year but have had some delicious lunches there in previous years.  Also on our do list are Zephyros at Almyros and Roummeli at Nissaki, both of which we've seen well recommended in the last couple of years but we haven't managed to get to either yet.  So many possibilities but unfortunately there are only so many meals one can eat in two weeks.

I think given that the sea temperature in Agni is apparently 21 degrees at present and the maximum sea temperature in August in the UK is 17 degrees, we should be ok! :)

I know this is a long way around to the Agni web cam, but you can see the photo that was taken last night, plus if you scroll across you get today's Temperature ..

I'll keep a eye on it and see if my link changes at all over the day

I hope I've added this photo right. I think you might need a magnifing glass to see it!! Confused
This is a must for a cold glass of beer. You have to call in to this little kafenion in Magazia. Walk through the door and you truly have stepped back in time! I won't show you the photos of the inside and spoil the suprise but if you want to see them they are in my gallery.

It was on your recommendation Elaine and seeing this lovely photo that we went to Bella Vista. Well worth all those steps to see that view! Voutoumi is the beach I like the best on Anti Paxos less people and so so beautiful from Bella Vista!

Malcy on reaching the top  wipe your brow with your 'hat' and then take the stroll across the top passing through a little hamlet and grape vines. Its mainly all down hill and takes you back down to the beach with more stunning views.  Smile

Hi
Not long until we go now Smile.  We are staying in Kalami as usual, and for the first time have hired a car so that we can see something of the island.  We love to eat well whilst on holiday, one of our favourites being Agni Taverna where we tend to eat regularly.  So, having the car, has anyone any recommendations?  It would be really helpful to know what you like about the places you recommend and also where to find them!!

Many thanks.

Hi all!
This will be our 3rd year running to Corfu Big smile and we were very nearly put off after our first visit because of the mossies. myself and 3 kids were eaten alive! But hubby not one bite Angry
Last year I was armed with all sorts of repellents, we had the Xpel mossie wipes (Poundland) in hand luggage which we used as soon as we landed it was a late flight landed at midnight so mossies were out in force!, sprayed apartment with Raid as soon as we arrrived and every evening before going out for dinner, spraying apartment and closing windows worked brilliantly.
Put plug ins in each room. We used lemon shower gel, soap etc. Avon skin so soft dry oil spray was lovely not only worked throughout the day and night but doubled up as a great moisturiser after all that sunbathing!
RESULT???
Not one bite!!!

Hope this helps x

will be sure to put some more taverna info on here  there is one in particular i want to try at the far end of petra beach towards anaxos that is said to be very good, we did not get there last year.
think i may hold on a few more days before buying my euros rate has improved a couple of cents in the last week. i have a feeling credit cards will be even less welcome this year.
wondering if i'll be buying euros at all for september or next year?
Ermm
car is booked up got a decent price from economycarrentals at Β£110 for 4 days and fully comp inc cdw etc with no excess payments or extras to pay when i get there. 2 weeks meet and greet parking for Β£65 never been so cheap!
guide books and maps all packed in the carry on, they are a joy to find for lesvos very few available and all pricey and none of them much use. best to buy when you get there. funnily enough our guide for kalymnos is totally out of print now as it was published in 1986 has some pictures of how kalymnos was then! saw it on amazon at Β£45 may flog it to them!!

Hi all,

I'm sure this question must have been asked before but the search turned up nothing.  Apologies if it is a common question.

We are arriving on 21st May and staying near Agni in a villa with an outdoor unheated pool.  Can anyone advise if it is likely to be useable or will it still be too cold?  We need to know whether to pack rash vests and thin wetsuits for the kids or if it will be fine or if it will be so cold that we may as well not bother with the pool.

Thanks,

Ian.
