Spring is here!

It seems just like yesterday that I was telling you about our Christmas 'snow'. Now, I am receiving emails from you saying 'We've booked!' Well, you will be pleased to know that the weather is now back to 'normal'. Warm spring-like days make digging out our new swimming pool hot work! Yes, I know what you are saying - you work twenty hours a day during the summer and deserve your winter rest - especially with the new baby! Aphrodite seems to change daily. Each morning we are greeted with a huge beaming grin and a soft giggle. Talking - or trying to - seems to be her favourite activity at the moment. I am not sure which parent she gets this from! Eleni and I have decided that a nanny will be needed for next summer, and this brings me back to the swimming pool. To help 'fund' a nanny, we are going to rent our house with new swimming pool (to CV travel) during the summer months - we stay most of the time down at Agni bay anyway. Above the Taverna we have a large air conditioned loft.

Web Site News

This year's website update is continuing at a enthusiastic pace. If you have not taken a look around recently then please do. You will find: the completed online Greek learning course; an overhauled message board system; new recipes!; many additions to the already extensive 'Corfu travel guide'; e-postcards; and an impressive online chat system - letting you speak to others who are viewing the website! I am currently working on a new guide for owning property on Corfu - everything you need to know before you commit finances!  If you have not yet booked your holiday then now is the time to do so. The accommodation section of the site has been updated with new offers. Many Taverna regulars have contributed their knowledge and photos to the site - thanks to all, especially Chris and Donna - the website administrators.

Other News

Easter in Greece this year falls on the 5th of May (Sunday). Easter to the Greeks is far more important than Christmas. The event starts on good Friday with a funeral procession in Corfu town. On Saturday at 11am large water-filled earthenware pots are hurled from the upper windows - symbolizing the throwing out of the old - it's an impressive event. Corfu town offers the best 'spectator views'. The streets are left completely covered with pot fragments. Saturday night, witnesses the remembrance of the 'Resurrection' - a midnight mass is held. All the churches are packed with locals holding lit candles. At midnight, the church bells ring, fireworks and shotguns are set off - in complete contrast to the prays being offered by the priest. On Easter Sunday, the day is spent eating and drinking! Spit roasted lamb, music and dancing are all on offer. Easter Monday is spent recovering. As Greek Easter normally falls in April, only a few tourists have had the opportunity to join in. With this year's Easter in May - what are you waiting for!

Looking forward to the summer.

This months competition

'Thomas' one of our waiters is pictured above swimming. Why you may ask is he swimming on the 6th of January?

Well 'Epiphany' (in Greek epiphaneia,"appearance"), is the feast celebrated on the 6th of January. The local priest after a three hour sermon, walks to the nearest jetty and throws a cross into the sea. The local village boys attempt to recover the lost cross - usually it is tied to a length of string in case they fail! This year Thomas was the only volunteer!

This months competition for a bottle of 'Boutari rose' - where was the picture taken? - (Hint there must be a church nearby.)
