Corfu Travel Guide with tips and advice for this Greek Island. September newsletter.

What an August! - Italians, more whales and Noel Edmonds! It has been so busy that I did not even manage to send the newsletter out on time.

So Captain Noel and his family arrived one lunchtime on a small Costa's 'renta' boat. As usual George went running out to help them moor up - to avoid certain jetty destruction - tourists and boats do not mix very well. The party staggered up the steps. I rushed over beers and coke lights, and inquired where they had come from - 'Albania'  Noel replied! To be honest I did not recognize him at first. I was soon told though by the excited table sitting next to him! I would rather not have known. So how are you supposed to treat celebrities? Do you try to 'overdo' the service - constantly annoying them. Do you tell the kitchen that they must 'specially treat table 6' - No - a recipe for disaster! We just serve them as normal people. Noel and his family loved their experience at Taverna Agni and returned five times!

Taverna Agni News

It has been really really busy! Packed lunchtimes - those that did not book a table could not get in! Strange how many arrived and after being turned away would say: I didn't know you had to book in Greece?

Weather wise - perfect. The day temperatures a little lower than normal - unlike the typical tropical humid days we normally get in August. The end of the month saw a little rain - another tropical storm with the most amazing fork lightning I have ever seen! Sorry to say but in  the rain - friends of ours were involved in a major road traffic accident - they are fine, but had to spend some days in the Corfu hospital. The Greek roads are particularly slippery.

Site News

I am planning a major site update, and the lovely Tuula has offered to help me. She is spending all of September in Corfu writing reports and taking pictures for the site! In return I am offering her accommodation and food!

She is also helping me with the accommodation part on the website. Many local people have shown interest and now over twenty non-commercial properties are to be added to the site for next season - from basic apartments to villas with pools.

Baby Aphrodite - not such a baby any more! - She grows so quickly. With such a busy summer I have had little time with her - I cannot wait for the winter!

Now at ten months. She is just about walking - clutching chairs and furniture for support. Don't ask about the speed at which she can crawl....!

"Well sorry to say but you have just missed this months event! It was the 'Pie festival' in Loustri - just above Agni Bay. It started at 8pm. The local Baker and many locals (including Taverna Agni) donated huge pies or Pittas as the locals call them.

These are layers of vegetables - finely chopped, and filo pastry. Many layers are built up to create the pitta. At the festival there was live music and local wine. All were invited. Later in the evening the dancing started. It was exhausting!"

August Report

I am adding to the website a report about each of the summer months. This will offer you an informed choice concerning the ideal time to visit Corfu. The following is based on my nine years of living in Corfu:

Corfu Travel Guide with tips and advice for this Greek Island. September newsletter.

August is busy with Italians. Italy's workforce declare August as a national holiday and invade! Corfu being so close sees a good number of Italians jump onto the numerous ferries from Brindisi (far South), Anconna (mid Italy) and Venice in the North. The ferries from Italy stop in Corfu town or head to the Greek mainland. The Italians tend to bring their own food with them - so the Tavernas are not much busier - but the beaches and roads certainly are. As soon as September nears - they all seem to disappear - almost over night! The island returns to normal!

The first two weeks of August see daytime temperatures mid 30's to 40 - with high humidity. Evenings are warm and humid. Without air-conditioning it may be difficult to sleep. Glorious sunny days give way to packed beaches and even busier Tavernas. The sea is at bath temperature.

The second two weeks see daytime temperatures of mid 30's  High humidity makes tropical storms likely. These flash storms usually only last for a few hours. The clouds suddenly blot out the sun and the rain hammers down. A few hours later the sun may emerge. The sea is not as settled as a result during the last few days of August and after any rain the sea temperature is a little cooler.

Staff Report

This months report is about Dina and Layla - two Albanian girls who work for us during the evening.

Corfu Travel Guide with tips and advice for this Greek Island. September newsletter.

Dina is 17 years old and her sister Layla is 22. They are from a family of nine brothers and sisters. They have worked for us for 5 years in the kitchen. Layla is our salad chef and Dina makes the desserts. During the winter months - when the Taverna is closed, they return home to Albania. They live in the village of Vrina - which is a small Albanian village close to the Greek mainland. Hobbies include music and dancing.

EasyJet Campaign

Have you ever wanted to visit Corfu during the winter months? What about a weekend summer trip? None of this is possible because there no scheduled flights to Corfu. So we are working with Hilary and Harry from the Corfiot Magazine to petition Easyjet to start a UK to Corfu service.
