Many tavernas also do pizza, but at the top of lane 6 next to the bakery is a lovely Italian restaurant.

If you start on the high street and head to the Adonis bar (towards Roda), take your first right just before you get to Adonis, carry on all the way to the beach and Woodys is the taverna on the corner (to your left).

I cant see much wrong with Acharavi at the moment, nor Roda for that matter. Yes, there are not many jobs and Greece has serious money problems but to say there is no investment and the place is looking rundown is seriously untrue. The main problem is that it is quiet, more so than normal for early season, but there are new and revamped businesses recently opened awaiting the arrival of holidaymakers. That arrival is key. Prices are the same as last year despite tax increases and rising costs, and eating out or a taverna visit is relatively cheap. There is no civil unrest on the island and you can feel as safe as you ever did. People are skint, yes, but the hospitality and friendliness has never wavered. View Topic: Acharavi 2012 |

We had some great meals in a taverna along the beach towards Roda. Can't remember the name though.
But dead easy to find, its the very last taverna going towards Roda. I would describe it as a mezze taverna, they have an extensive menu with many small dishes which we used to share between us. Katerina and Andreas were very helpfull in explaining the different dishes and giving advice. Bob

Hi there,
I have started using the 'My Travel Cash' card - it came recommended from the Money Saving Expert website as it has no ATM fees and 1% cash back. It's a Mastercard so it is accepted at the Tavernas and shops in AG Steph. Used to have the Monarch card but they started charging €1.25 for cash withdrawls - No thanks, I like to get at my cash for free thanks. Take a look at the money saving expert website - they always have different deals for pre-paid holiday cards. All the best

I think the Akron beach is also called Agia Triada, situated below the Akrotiri Hotel. The Greek Way is where the Moody Blue used to be [ie nearer the Paleo Inn than it used to be].
If you go to Lakones, not only go to Boulis for an evening meal, but during the daytime, call in at the bakery next door, for coffee, wonderful cakes and a fabulous view on the terrace overlooking Paleo. Whilst in Doukades, call in at the Taverna Elizabeth for a meal. Now I have to admit that on first sight it is not the sort of place that seems an obvious choice, just like their front room really. You can sit inside or sit at the tables on the edge of the road [you may have to move the table and chairs if a large vehicles comes through!!!] while you watch the world go by and also get a feel of Corfu village life. But I can assure you the food is fantastic and well worth the visit. For any real ale lovers, look out for bottles of Corfu Brewery beer, as my grandson would say, "It's lush" . I believe it is available in a few places on draught, but I've not seen any in Paleo. Brewery visits last year were available on a Saturdays 12.00 - 17.00, near to San Stephanos [W]33 sleeps to go!
Bella Vista is well worth the climb Malcy - it definitely does what it says on the tin
I think you're right about the wading in, all the boats seem to moor offshore at Voutoumi - in fact I seem to recall that there's a line of buoys strung across the bay to indicate no boats beyond a certain point.
You are absolutely right Elaine (as usual
Cant believe it took us 20 years to finally go there - and all because we took a couple of friends with us and they persuaded us. It was their first visit to Paxos and they did more in 2 weeks than we have probably done over all our visits.
I am definitely into Paxos chill; eating, drinking and people watching
Malcy
You do need to moor offshore and swim/wade in. There were no buoys there in June but it is expected (and frowned upon if you dont) - its common sense and much fairer to other beach and water users not to have to negotiate boats and running outboards. You can, if its clear, drop off and pick up your passengers on the small 'jetty' at the northerly side of the beach. At least that way, only you get a soaking
Only 33 days 22 hrs 58 mins until we arrive (unless the Igoumenitsa ferry changes times)

I can't wait either. It is a bit of a hike up to the bus stop in Liapades. Are you stopping at the top of the hill on the main road? Do go and have a meal at the taverna on the right of the road down to the beach, at the bottom just before the Olive Tree. View looking out over the water is fantastic and the foods not bad either!!! Have a good time.

I was at Jimmy's Taverna in Pagi (near Agios Georgios NW) the other day and he was telling me about the filming of the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only. Apparently the car chase was filmed in and around Pagi so I thought I'd post a link to it on here. Roger Moore's Spanish sounds quite out of place but it's good seeing the Citroen passing Jimmy's bar in the movie. The whole area is well worth a visit incidentally. Agios Gergios NW has a beautiful sandy beach with just enough tavernas and Pagi is beautiful. If you fancy seeing one of the best sunsets on the island go up to Afionas, you'll be glad you did.

Writing this from Katoi Bar internet cafe at beach. Had a lovely week of sunny hot weather but today (Monday) cloud has blown across and there is a cool wind so no-one in sea. Beach now nearly cleared of jetsam from winter storms and resort getting going a bit more than in 1st week of season.
Afionas tavernas quite busy over the week-end and quite few people walking down to Porto Timoni. Most tavernas and restaurants now open and waiting for you all! Maybe I will post some photos when I get home next week. Dennis View Topic: Agios Georgios New Season |

I think events in the next month or so may dictate this one
Obviously if Greece defaults, ie rejects the bail out measures, I would suspect things may get a bit iffy and having sterling notes would be a wise move The banks fill the machines and if money is not being deposited they will not be able to. I remember many years ago, pre Euro days when Greece was experiencing high inflation and shop or taverna would accept sterling. It was a currency they felt they could trust and they were hoarding it View Topic: Currency Advice |

Hi DaGreek
I have a pre-loaded Euro card too and have had no problems with using it in the tavernas in Agios Stephanos, as well as occasionally using it at the ATM in Kassiopi. Very handy because you can check your balance via text or online and load extra money on via same route when running short. Only thing is whether Greece wil still be in the euro in September (we go at beginning of October) and what that will mean for all this. Cheers, David View Topic: Boat Hire Office Above Supermarket |

Hi, we used to go to Kavos 25 years ago when it was a lovely place, there was a taverna along the beach called Onaftus which changed its name to Snoopys, there was also Thomas Bar which was along a small lane, we used to go there every evening, thats where we discoverd Kumquat which is really nice, Terrys taverna and Yiorgos bar spring to mind as well as the Black Duck. We used to love it until it became ruined with the youngsters, Id love to go back and see it again, we stayed in Antonis villas and Poppy apartments. Maybe one day we will return.

I was in Lassi last night at the Retseto Taverna. We paid 60 euro for 4 to eat with too much to drink! Prices vary greatly depending on where you are staying. Katelios has a good selection of tavernas and great choice of self catering apartments and prices are reasonable.

l'll ask in Loggos before climbing to the Bella Vista. Hopefully someone will know someone who knows if it's open.
Helen - Is that little Taverna the one on the right as you come into Magazia after you have passed the Fire Station and Lorry Park? It always looks too much of a locals Taverna. I haven't stopped there as I feel that I would be intruding! BUT - If I had the right hat! Any sugestions for this year? We are staying at The Old Vinyard again this year. The owners opened their own Taverna last year and were very proud of it. it's well worth a visit just for the view over the Island to the Mainland. They were not fully open when we visited last year and it was a bit Fawlty Towers but I'm sure they have got it running now. It is on the 'main' road coming down from Fontana to Loggos near Zernatika. One thing I'm still hoping to see again is Dolphins. We saw two on our first visit about 10 years ago as we were coming in towards Lakka on the Christina. Would love to see some again as we did off Skopelos. Cruised along for about 15 minutes close to a pod of about 6. Then noticed how far we were out to sea!! View Topic: Paxos "must-dos" |

Hi all.
We were in Kalami 2 weeks ago stunning and great to see the locals clearing the beach, met some very nice people and walked miles along the coastline even saw the Agni Taverna! We hope to be settling in the area in 16 months so if anyone knows of any long term lease/rentals please let us know. Off to Amazon to look at the book looks great good luck with it. Hi Mikey, thanks for the offer. Please find out what you can in regard to cashing travellers cheques at the office while you are out there. If I need to, I may just take a load of cash, or if you have no trouble using your card I may try one too. Do you use your card in the tavernas or just mainly draw cash from an ATM in Kassiopi? Cheers

Hi,
My absolute favourites are Agni Taverna for a really special meal. Roumelis near Nisakki for brilliant meze's. Bavias just into Sidari, near Diellas supermarket for authentic Greek food and hospitality. Pizza Romano, also in Sidari near the green by the church. Again, lovely Greek cuisine, amazing pizzas and Greek hospitality. Must say though, that we eat regularly at the only taverna in our village, Mon Amour, or as known by the locals, Kokkinos. All the friends that we have taken there for a meal always want to go back. Say no more!!! ![]() View Topic: Restaurant Recommendations |

Some people have already mentioned Agios Stephanos, but we would also recommend carrying on up the coast to Avlaki - turn right at the Nikos supermarket/Michelangelo complex before you get to Kassiopi. Avlaki is about a mile/mile and a half further on - there are two tavernas there. The second one Cavo Barbaro is where we go.

I believe there is a good taverna in Geni itself, if you head towards Lefkas town you will come to Lygia, there a a few good tavernas there. O'zouras is very good right on the fishing quayside always filled with locals. At the other end there is Mikis taverna who is very friendly and serves the usual taverna fayre, at the other end along the shoreline is seven islands which again is excellent for fish. Aand for a post meal drink there is the art club run by Spiros, however would suggest you either find a room there or nominate a driver as the hospitality there is rather good!

Hi Hugeabbafan, the site above is a good website for information on Roda. Also in answer to other forum requests people have listed their favourite places to eat and drink. As you are at the Coral you are in a very good position. As you enter Roda you will pass a few Tavernas, of which my absolute favourite is the the Five Roses. There are a number of shops, the one we like for souvenirs is Lena's on the old road near the Church. There is a new one called Penelopi in the new block across from the Afrodite, which we will be trying. If you turn right from the Coral you head towards Acharavi and there are some very nice Tavernas along the beach. Our favourite for a walk and a meze is Foros, just before you turn up the road to Acharavi. There are plenty of sunbeds/parasols for hire on the beach at Roda and very reasonably priced. Hope this helps. Bev

The joy of Kalami to Steph and myself is the beautiful bay, the laid back atmosphere of the A&A and all the staff and the fact that there's nothing more to think about other than which taverna to dine in at night. That's the hardest decision to make. On the beach, Matellas or the balcony of Dimitris. We're both in the rat race back home so going to Kalami and totally switch off is total bliss to us. Everyone to there own is what I say. We've all got our own idea of paradise. Roll on September 14

We've been to Paleo for the last 6 years and the weather is usually very good, though 3 years ago we managed to have 8 thunderstorms in 6 days. Temperature wise in the mid to high 20's, late evenings can turn a little chilly sometimes but not cold.
The Paleokastritsa Hotel is raised above the main road, looks impessive though I have heard both good and bad reports. It really is find out for yourself. Even though you are all inclusive at the hotel, explore the numerous excellent restaurants, bars and tavernas. We've wanted to return ever since as we didn't get to do any of the things we planned.

For us, there are many reasons we keep going back and we have been to several Greek islands and for us none compare to Kalami.
- the setting is beautiful - the people are warm, friendly and want you to enjoy your holiday - several of the tavernas in our opinion are a notch above your typical tourist fare and we would rather pay more and enjoy, than less and be disappointed as we have been on many occasions in other places - it is quiet and peaceful and there are no British pubs, McDonalds, clubs, etc, etc - you can hire a speedboat and see the north east coast in the best way possible for us - the view from the balcony is stunning Most of all, it ticks all our boxes for a perfect holiday. Hope this helps. Each to their own! View Topic: A & A |

I totally respect you comments, each to his (or her) own. Not everyone likes the same things, that is being human. We go back to the Adonis and Asonitis each year for many reasons, among which are: we love Kalami, a quiet charming village: we love the views from the room balconies, waking up and taking in the view on the first morning is special: we love the people, we have made many friends for life in Kalami, both holidaymakers and locals (and Woody): we love the tavernas which we feel are excellent: we love the fact there is 'little to do', suits us just fine: we go on about the decor etc as we regard the place itself as a friend and talking about it makes us feel we are there: I could go on.... Sidami,
Many people return again and again to he A&A because they love the place and it gives good value for money but of course you know this as you have been there. The A&A is also probably the cheapest place around this area and as cheap as most tourist placs around Corfu to eat but of course you also know this as you have been there. You also mention the bar but the comments are about the reception area which is across the road from the bar but you know this as you have been there?? No, there is not a lot to do other than relax, eat and drink in the quality tavernas in the area but for many the peace and quiet and fine food is what they go for.
It sounds like you do not like this type of holiday so it's better for you to stick to the busier more commercialised resorts where there is always some entertainment available.
Kalami, along with most other places on the N/E coast, is a sleepy, small village and I hope it remains so. View Topic: A & A |

Hi there Nic28.
I have stayed at the Telemachos Hotel for the past 22 years, sometimes twice a year so that may tell you something about it!!
You must bear in mind that the hotel is 2 star only and therefore, do not expect the standards of anything higher. We have always 'taken things as they come' in Corfu and as you can guess, have been very comfortable with everything about it. The staff have always been exceptionally helpful and friendly and we look forward to our coming visit on the 21st of May.
As we only stay bed and breakfast, we have a couple of great places where eat in the evening within a few minutes walk of the hotel. The first is 'La Casa' and Alexandros, which is further along the main road but still within an easy walk. The other is called Mam-A-Taka which is on the other side of the road before you get to La Casa. There are several other tavernas in Dassia, but of course we have our 'favourites'.
The road down from the Telemachos is fairly steep but after you have walked it once or twice you get used to it.
If there is anything else you would like to know about the hotel, please let me know.
I am sure you will enjoy your holiday and will want to return next year.
Pam...

In Corfu town there is Theodoki, which looks back across the bay towards the old fort. Go past the traffic lights where you turn right to the airport and then carry down towards the windmill. The kitchen is in a house over the road but you sit under an awning in the grassy area. Good traditional food, simple, but fresh and always busy with locals. Extremely good value price wise. Huge bowls of salad and the most massive plate of spagetti pastisada that I have ever attempted to eat!
There is also a good fish taverna further up the green towards the traffic lights but cant remember the name - it has green lights set amongst the grass.
In a different price range is a restaurant called Pomodoro where the chef came third in the Greek version of MasterChef. Very good food and a nice atmosphere - in the summer you sit in the little square outside.
Bit different in Greece - but there is a crepe restaurant near to the Venetian Well, run by a lovely family very traditionally furnished and lovely food - again a nice atmosphere.
In Lakones there is Boulis restaurnt with stunning views over Paleokastritsa. It's traditional food similar to my first two choices but with the view!
David
Hi Wereangels
I have to second David's recommendation above. Last year we were looking for somewhere in Lakones other than where the coach trips go (nothing against those establishments, just that we've been there, done that) and another site member recommended Boulis. We enjoyed our first lunch there so much we drove over from Kalami twice more during our fortnight.
We also like Elizabeth's at Doukades, could sit outside there all day watching life come through the square whilst we eat. One of the things we intended to do last year was go up there in the evening. We didn't manage to fit it in so it's still on the to do list. Two other places we tried for the first time last year and intend returning to were Mon Amour at Kavadades (inland from Sidari) where we had some really good rollo and the taverna at Imerolia which was on par with Taverna Agni price wise and was a lovely experience with the sea food, the setting & the view.
A few years ago we had a delicious, indulgent, sea food lunch at Akrogiali at St Georges North. It was a bit hair raising to get there but the lunch was worth it.
Almost forgot George's on Almyros beach. Another place we say we'll get to in the evening but haven't done yet. We didn't eat there last year but have had some delicious lunches there in previous years. Also on our do list are Zephyros at Almyros and Roummeli at Nissaki, both of which we've seen well recommended in the last couple of years but we haven't managed to get to either yet. So many possibilities but unfortunately there are only so many meals one can eat in two weeks.

We enjoy Pizza Pete's the best we've ever had. The Rex, next road behind the Liston and the Italian in a little square just off the main shopping street, not the one with the blue tree! And the best value for a quick lunch, the Ouzo Mezze at Olympia on the Liston. Another favourite is the taverna tucked into the bank by the beach at Nissaki run by a lovely young chap whose wife is a musician, his fish and lemon rice is to die for. Sorry this is all a bit vague but I never was good at names. Must try Rouvas this time. Not long now.

From Kalami, it's not too far to drive up to Agios Stephanos (NE), off to the right before you reach Kassiopi. It's a lovely little village with five tavernas round the little bay - Eucalyptus, Kaparelli, Gallini, To Fagopotion and Cochilli. From various posts on these message boards, everyone has their favourites, so it may be a little presumptuous to suggest which are ours. But, there's plenty of choice, so it's worth two minutes' walk round the bay to decide what you fancy. They're all good Corfu fare and in a great position. In fact, a lot of people have also recommended the Tavernaki, which is small, just off the main road at Sinies as you turn towards Agios Stephanos (see posts on the Agios Stephanos NE message boards).
We have also been to the Panorama - possibly a bit more authentic than the more visitor-oriented places round the coast. Or carry on past there a way and there certainly used to be a very rustic one, the School House, but haven't been there in a few years. Good luck. David View Topic: Restaurant Recommendations |

If i was to recommend only one then it would have to be Rouvas in Corfu town its just round the corner from M&S on the road to the market. They only used to open for lunch, but everything is freshly prepared that day and they cater mainly for local workers. Therefore it is authentic and you will eat rustic dishes you will see in no tourist tavernas. They are very friendly and will show you all the dishes they have available, and their home baked bread is the best. Beware though once the dish is gone its gone. Nothing is re-heated or cooked from frozen, they sell out fast, so get there early. We have been there 3 or 4 times and always order a selection of dishes. Weve had rabbit, a really spicy dogfish stew, pasta dishes, beautiful green beans cooked with tomatoes and garlic. I believe it was one of the places that Rick Stein visited.

That is a lovely photo Elaine. So clear to the Mongonisi Island and even beyond in the distance to a hint of the mainland?

If you go to Corfu Town, there's a traditional taverna (with kitchen at front so you can see and choose food) in Odos Sebastianos, which is just behind the Liston, close to the Catholic Cathedral
Great good, and REAL french fries, not the usual frozen variety! Can't remember the name, but it is very popular with the locals, who often come in for take-away. There's a few tables outside, but not much room, since the street is little more than a lane. View Topic: Restaurant Recommendations |

Went to the Panorama Taverna in Porta last year, as the name suggests great views, great food too, quite traditional, shared a kilo of lamb chops with a selection of starters and dips etc, great evening.
Relatively easy to get to, in the hills way above Kalami, not in walking distance though. View Topic: Restaurant Recommendations |

Hi
Not long until we go now . We are staying in Kalami as usual, and for the first time have hired a car so that we can see something of the island. We love to eat well whilst on holiday, one of our favourites being Agni Taverna where we tend to eat regularly. So, having the car, has anyone any recommendations? It would be really helpful to know what you like about the places you recommend and also where to find them!!Many thanks. View Topic: Restaurant Recommendations |

Yes, tooo soon to pack! You'll only get in a muddle nearer to departure! We've considered buying euros for August now in light of the increase in rates. Not so sure now, with the European election results - will there still be Euros in Greece by August - with all the anti-austerity talk! I should get in quick now Kev, before the rates plummet after this weekend of European news.
I will wait with bated breath for your taverna reviews! Economy Car Rentals - are they a Lesbos based company? What made you go with them. Everyone on TA talks about one company, not that one though. View Topic: Lesvos, Walk |

will be sure to put some more taverna info on here there is one in particular i want to try at the far end of petra beach towards anaxos that is said to be very good, we did not get there last year.
think i may hold on a few more days before buying my euros rate has improved a couple of cents in the last week. i have a feeling credit cards will be even less welcome this year.
wondering if i'll be buying euros at all for september or next year?
car is booked up got a decent price from economycarrentals at Β£110 for 4 days and fully comp inc cdw etc with no excess payments or extras to pay when i get there. 2 weeks meet and greet parking for Β£65 never been so cheap!
guide books and maps all packed in the carry on, they are a joy to find for lesvos very few available and all pricey and none of them much use. best to buy when you get there. funnily enough our guide for kalymnos is totally out of print now as it was published in 1986 has some pictures of how kalymnos was then! saw it on amazon at Β£45 may flog it to them!! One for us to try this year is The Bella Vista taverna on Anti P. Have not tried the 214 steps before as were unsure about mooring up and if it was going to be open in early June as some locals were uncertain, but they could call their cousain!
We moor up at Vrika beach on the left side to go to the Tavernas but looks like you go in as far as you can, lift outboard then wade ashore on Voutoumi which looks the best way to Bella Vista? Have not visited the Olive Press Museum near Magazia yet. View Topic: Paxos "must-dos" |

We've tried them all with the exception of Roumelli's and over the years have had our favourites. But for the past six or seven years have preferred Eleni's.
Two tavernas that haven't been mentioned are Anthi's where the choice is bigger and the Olive Press although we haven't used the latter for a while. View Topic: Places To Eat |

Here is the info as promised copied over from the Halkidiki forum.
(Lots of car hire places about. Kriopigi Cars we have used and they were good. We have also used ones from the airport.
You could visit Vergina which is about 3-4 hours away. Brilliant museum built around tomb of Philip of Macedonia and really unique. Locally on Kassandra. Loutra at the end is nice. Go to Villa Stasa for lunch, a Greek taverna with a fantastic view, good prices and portions, and not many foreign tourists. Also at Villa Stassa you can go down to the sea and snorkel around the rocks etc. Lovely location and in June will not be too busy. Drive all around Kassandra. You can do it in a day easily (it is only about 1-1 1/2 hours drive round) and see most places. Paliori an old Greek village, nothing much there but nice to drive round the back. Agia Paraskevi is a lovely old Greek village with a taverna and a couple of cafes. Mainly Greek people go there and there are some lovely houses. On your side (as opposed to our side!) there is Pefkochori, Hanioti - a tourist village, but nice to visit and people watch with lovely beach and lots of bars and tavernas and snack bars, Polichrono - nice village with a lovely beach and good village centre. Kriopigi - set on the road, but walk up to the old square and eat at Anthoulas (evenings only) for food not found elsewhere. On the main road Sweet Coffee Shop for crepes, home made pizza and much more, and a lovely sea view balcony just opened, owned by our friends Morfy and Sakis, they will make you feel welcome. Also on main road Casablanca bar for a drink and chat with Debbie (Welsh) and her husband Tony (Greek). They do English snacks, but it is so friendly to go for a coffee or drink there. Kallithea - mainly Russians there nowadays, and we personally do not like it much anymore. However Ouzerie Paramethi is a nice taverna on the main road, although it has tables at the side and back and is set out very Greek style, although obviously it is a tourist taverna. Having said that, the food is very good. Kassandrea, the main town and market is on a Tuesday. Quite a few new shops opened up of late, but mainly Greek shoppers apart from Market day. Nice to sit out for a coffee and some cheese pie. Siviris, look past the dull entrance which has come about this year as they chopped all the trees back after a flood last September. But go down to the jetty and look to your left. Thin stretch of beach, hardly ever full til August, walk even further along and round a corner to find two isolated bays. Fourka, well we personally do not like Fourka beach, but many people do. Go down and take a look and decide for yourselves. Mola Kaliva, where we live. Two supermarkets, two tavernas, two snack bars and a bar. Pebbly shingle beach but never full and the cleanest clearest water. Nea Skioni. Nice fishing village with a newly built marina, not quite finished mind you. Nice Greek village but just starting to build more and there is a new hotel there now. Set along the waterfront, nice and easy going. Then you can go round Sithonia. Lots of nice places, a bit more isolated and more beautiful. Nice to visit, but we would not live there 7 months like we do here as everywhere is so far apart. Vourvourou is beautiful, so is Nea Marmaras. Lots of other nice villages and seaside towns, but to go from Kassandra and drive all round, with perhaps a two hour beach stop and one hour lunch stop will take you a full day. Worth it though. If your nerves can stand it, drive to Thessaloniki A wonderful city. You can find parking but it is expensive. Visit Aristotles Square, the old market and the port area. You can drive up to Arnea in the mountains where they make Flokati rugs. We have not been up for over ten years, but hear it is still beautiful and rugs still made, although perhaps they are more tourist savvy now ! Sani - (Sani area is lovely although we feel it has been spoilt by the hotels taking over one of the best beaches ever). More villages on the way to Thessaloniki, Nea Potidea nice place, Nea Fokea nice fishing village. Go to Nea Moudania (Wed is market day). Old Greek working town, nothing flashy but a few nice shops and lots of everyday shops - the fishmongers are amazing to look at ! Bigger than it appears at first glance you need to walk up and down every road, and the main road down to the sea, to see all the shops. Thats enough to digest for now I think. Let me know if you want to know anything else.) We would definately recommend the visit to Vergina. Looks nothing from outside but very interesting museum. Google it.
Also on our way back, we saw a sign for a monastry. Took the road, which went on and on. Very bendy. Ended at a monastry. Turned out to be the monastry of St.John the Baptist. 3 chapels, a rock one to a more modern one. It overlooked a ravine absolutely fantstic view, and we were even given refreshments by the priest! This was found purely by accident by following a brown tourist sign(I Think)
It really is possible to drive round the peninsula that easily. from where you are staying head south and just follow the road round. We did find that at Pefkohori you get a lot of weekenders influx from Bosnia, and the place got busy! So may want to do it midweek.
History wise the peninsula is not like Corfu. The development seems much more modern and if you are looking for traditional greek it may not be that easy, that is what we found. But don't let me put you off. We had a lovely time.
Also note the driving around Thessaloniki is not for the faint hearted! They come at you all directions, and you really need to be aware.
If I think of more I'll post
Jeff

Depends where you are staying as there is Nissaki village and harbour, the main road area and Nissaki Beach Hotel. We always stay at the village and all the tavernas are good - favourite for us is Mitsos as they are so friendly and remember and welcome you year after year. Food is good, fairly standard taverna stuff. Setting stunning at the beach, jutting out to the sea.
Best for food and classy atmosphere is getting the boat transfer to Agni, a really memorable meal but more pricey than local. Other local tavernas are the Olive Press, Nissaki Sea View (better just for drinks I think), and the one overlooking the beach (?Eleni) can't remember the name - nice view. But really you can't go wrong in any of them, very personal choice. Other people will have different opinion to me. View Topic: Places To Eat |

Elaine, every time we go to Paxos I want to go to the sunset bar at Emritos, and every year we somehow never do! Call it inertia by evening time, or the lure of the Roxy Bar, but it has become a bit of a joke now and I somehow think we'll never make it now. I did like Monondendri in the early days of Ben's Bar, but sounds bit busy now with the new taverna and pool.

Hello Turner,
I stayed in Kriopigi last June at The Kassandra Bay Hotel. Kriopigi itself is a small village on the main road with an older part behind the petrol station, there is a village square with a really good taverna in it.
Most of the places to stay are on the winding road down to the beach which is about a 20 minute walk down. There is a small train that runs to the beach owned by the bigger hotel on the main Road anyone can use that as well for 1 euro I think.
If you don't want to hire a car the bus service is good to visit other resorts in both directions some livelier than Kriopigi, or you can walk along the beach if you take a right turn for miles and miles passing various parts which have sunbeds which you can use if you purchase a drink.
Turn left at the beach and you have the most beautiful strip of beach backed by mountains and what I can only describe as a gorge opening on to the beach.
Truly stunning area, the only downside was the dreary journey from the airport, nothing nice to look at, unlike Corfu which is breathtakingly staggering whichever way you look and wherever you go.
Hope that was of help.
Where are you staying by the way?

Hi Fletcher12
Unfortunately we haven't seen anybody famous there, only heard stories. We were told that George was seen in drinking in Dimitrie's Taverna along with his wife who didn't seem to be bothered that he was. Obviously we've all heard the stories of British politicians enjoying the hospitality of the Rothschilds, and we were even told that the Queen once stayed in Kalami, but not sure of the validity of that one! You never know, if my book becomes a best seller, people might start looking out for me! Lol View Topic: Kalami Book |

It's possible you were on the road that takes you to the Ropa Valley, Agios Ionnias and also Corfu town, this is were Aqualand is situated. There is a military establishment on that road. If you were staying in Kontokoli you may have taken the road off the main drag that is signposted for Danilia Village to get there, I have seen various small tavernas on that road but couldn't identify the one in the picture. Hope this may be of some help.

Well in this case San Stephanos NE.
Today being May Day, we decided to spend the day in San Stephanos, sitting by the beach at Kaparelli. All was quite quiet when we arrived, ordered toast and jam for breakfast, could'nt get to our favoured table because most of the tables were occupied by crews from a flotilla moored off the jetty, getting their instructions for the day's sail. Once they had left, we moved tables, I collected wild flowers (broom and vetch) for Wendy to make her traditional May Day reath to hang above our front door. Then the rush started, I think half of Corfu Town was persuaded out due to the fantastic weather together with the holiday atmosphere, for lunch and a chance to let the kids run riot along the beach and venture into the sea. I can't remember seeing the road more clogged with cars, or the tavernas busyer, other than the height of the season. I've no doubt Kerasia was just as busy. Good news for struggling businesses, lets hope it continues. Bob

Does anyone ever read a post with the outcome that in the future, they may or have changed their venue, and found theyve missed so much for many years?
This thought came about from someone I work alogside, that had been going to Spain for the last 40 years or so 60+ set in their ways and me going on about Greece and how wede found it many many years ago after going Spain.
Well
Theyve just come back from a week in Athens.
They hadnt told me they were going as Ide have gone on and on about this coffee shop that taverna and where to shop.
Well,
pleased to say they loved the place, the people, the atmosphere, and quote "wished wede listened to you years ago "theyve booked Agistri after going on a day trip from Pireaus"
They had got a terrific deal through their local travel agent in Manchester, flight, 3 star+ in the centre of Athens but did their own thing after the first 3 days as the tours became predictable, this site, then perticular cafe, obvious the rep got a back hander and not with to T/O choice ille bet. They ended up in Pireaus after listening to the hotel porter who had a "friend" in the port the old just ask for Spiros the shipping agent type of assistance But it worked for them ...
They took "Spiros:s advice and thats how they ended up on Agistri.
Well another convert to Greece allbeit not Corfu but hey Ille work on that for next year.

Hi
We have been with Dino previously and very convenient it is. However, one time when we wanted to go at a different time (for lunch), we asked in the travel shop up the stairs next to the little supermarket and they got a taxi boat out for us within a few minutes and it took us to Agni and then came back and collected us later. Taverna Agni also has a speedboat taxi which collects from and returns to Agios Stephanos twice an evening (by reservation) - times are on their Corfu NE map on this site. David

Hi all were off to Kassiopi again this June and im determined to try Lobster. Can anyone advise me on where is the best restaurant is to try this dish?
Gary, I would think Imerolia Beach Taverna. Spiro, the owner, specialises in sea food and sometimes catches his own Lobsters. Lovely taverna in a beautiful setting and wonderful staff. Alec. View Topic: Lobster |

Reading through one of the travel companies' latest Paxos blogs, I came across their tips for the things they consider to be must-dos when visiting Paxos. I'm not doing very well, because after 20 years of holidaying on Paxos, there are still at least two that I've not done
1 Stroll through the olive groves (yes, done may times!) 2 Watch the sunset from one of the east coast sunset bars (no, never done that) 3 Walk to Tripitos Arch (yes, did this in our early Paxos days, but didn't have the nerve to actually walk across it 4 Lunch at Monodendri beach (no, but I've had many a lunch at the beachside tavernas on Levrechio and Mongonissi, so does that count instead?) 5 Coffee and people-watching in Gaios Square (yes, many times) 6 Hire a boat and go over to Anti Paxos for lunch (kind of - done both separately, but never gone to Anti Paxos in a hire boat) So, what does everyone else think of this list and what would you add to it? Some things I'd add would be:- 1 Ride the bus along Loggos harbour 2 Walk up to Loggos Mill and Lakka Point for the best views of the two villages 3 Most important of all - do nothing! Just relax and let Paxositis take over View Topic: Paxos "must-dos" |

If you pick your accommodation carefully, there is no need to tackle any hills (other than a really small incline) when you are in Kassiopi - some of the apartments are up in the hills, but the whole town is virtually level. It is a fantastic place for a holiday, with something for everyone - just enough going on if you want entertainment but many quiet, traditional tavernas if you don't. True, the beach isn't sandy but the water is beautifully clear and no sand to get everywhere!!! Roda is also a nice resort, and totally flat. Whereever you go, enjoy
ps. some good deals with Thomson to the Elizabeth Apartments in Roda at the moment - sadly I am now a Kassiopi convert so no good for me!

We also love Agia Efimia
It is very laid back but has all you want, bakers, supermarket, chemist, good tavernas etc as well as a busy small port with a periptero. It is a mixture of old and new but they all blend in well, not everything was leveled in the 1950's earthquake. I love it Most of Kephalonia is within easy travelling distance by car. One point to watch out for is the the very slippery roads on Kefalonia, a combination of over hanging olive trees and the fact the road a made of marble chip aggregate and when it rains, well don't bother LOL. We have traveled all over the island and still reckon Agia Efimia to be the best place to stay View Topic: A Question Of Kefalonia? |

Hi GIlly. I have been all over the island with Nathan from Corfu for the last two days but now have time to answer you. There are many places you could stay. I would say Skala and Katelios to start. Sandy beaches. good choice of tavernas. If the children want wantersports go to Skala. katelios is quieter. But if you stay in Katelios you can go to Skala by boat or by car or by bus as it is only 6 kms along the coastal raod. The good thing about these resorts is that everything is within walking distance and the teenagers can go off on their own in a safe environment. If you want advice on accommodation let me know.
kefalonia(at)agni.gr If you find a package holiday you like and want to run it pass me then let me know. You can look on the website www.agni.gr/travel.kefalonia for villas in Katelios. See Ismini, Fedra, Semeli, Aspasia, Konstantina, Alexandra, Melissa. You can google for them as well. For some apartments down by the beach in Katelios see the website www.kefaloniatravleguide.com and click through to accommodation section and then to Katelios. View Topic: A Question Of Kefalonia? |

Tina,
Thank you so much for your reply! We head out on the 9th July - 23rd July and I literally cant wait! OKk thats fab, I will maybe take a few spare just in case if I have the space left in my case! OK good tip on the soap bar, will give that a try. You are right, holidays most certainly arent for cooking, Im more worried about being able to have a good cuppa and choccie biscuit ha!!! OK thats fab info about shops, my last trip was only 1 week so only visited Lakka once. Fingers and toes crossed its the hydrofoil, not looking forward to a long boat trip in the heat if thats what they put us on!! Oh thats good about Parga trips, I was wondering if that would be a possibility!! I have heard about Monadendri beach, am excited to visit there, the taverna looks lovely! That has made me alot happier, as Id read several reviews about rooms being dark and Im much more of a bright person!! Fingers crossed I get a nice bright room with a lovely view! (heres hoping anyway!) Thanks again Tina.

Hello Elaine, I have just typed a long reply and the blinking computer said there was a problem and I lost it before I pressed send!!! We'll see about you getting out of Loggos this year??
Sam, what month are you there, you may bump into someone from here?
We stayed for 4 nights last year and got bath and hand towels, and Mum allways does, but I have read that they didn't at one time? Helen maybe able to help with that. I take a china mug filled with sponge and jcloth and travel washup liquid, wrapped in a tea towel. Also vanish soap bar for when I do my mis hols stamping in the shower beach towel wash, and when my 2 messy lot can't find their mouths with oil and sauce! Or, better still take them to Sisters washing machine
The studios are as described, basic old style Greek self catering. They do have a BabyBelling 2 ring stove and cooker with grill, but not the equipment or space to make a gourmet meal. Who wants to do lots of cooking on holiday anyway? Top tip fill the coffee pan with water and onto boil(saucer on top) as you start your shower. It will be boiling with enough for 2 cups when you finish!
No problem with getting bread and all foods in Lakka. One shop does stay open in the day and Sundays for most essentials.
Recently Olympic have used the hydrofoils more sensibly taking into account your departure and arrival times, even used sea taxis so you get there the following morning if a night flight. Don't know if it helped that the rep had lived on the island for a few years?
You can't get to AntiPaxos direct, it means a bus trip into Gaios. The round island boat trips run from lakka too, chaeper to book direct in the village rather than via rep! Also Parga trips in mid/peak season. Bastas family also have a taverna and salt water pool at Monadendri beach and provide a free minibus there and back each day. They are a lovely family with various siblings, Uncles, Cousins running both businesses.
For those who have been to Bastas before I have just heard that they have dug out the left hand side, as you face the entrance, to allow more space and light into those rooms. Though some customers prefer them in the hottest months. Also Tracey is repping for another company, so a new Lady, Sam.
I'm sure you'll enjoy Lakka too. View Topic: Bastas!!! |

We have stayed at a Villa Anastasia in that area but the one we stayed in was actually in Sinies, which is at the top of the road where you turn down to San Step NE. If this is the one let me know and I can tell you more about it. As for eating out you will be spoilt for choice as all the Tavernas in San Steph and surrounding areas (Avlaki, Kalami, Agni) are great and all child friendly you will not have a problem. There is a small village taverna in Sinies that I think there is a thread already running on.
As for supermarkets you need look no further than Yanni's in the centre of Sinies, lovely guy with everything you could want, his homemade dips are fab he also has an excellent wine selection and he can get you bbq meat/fish just ask him. There is also another good place on the road to Kassiopi, cant remember its name but is on the main road. Also the cake shop at Sinies is amazing, in my opinion make the best lemon pie on the island FAB. Hope this helps, you will have a great holiday. Re Aqualand think you will find lots of info already on here somewhere. Have been but not for a few years. Gilly View Topic: Villa Anastasia And General Help |

Make sure you get up to Afionas one evening and go to the Mama's Kitchen style taverna, on the left as you walk towards Afionas point. It's a "point from the pots" type of place, delicious food and it was only open evenings when we last visited in the summer of 2010.
Make sure you find the Brouklis taverna in the road away from the sea towards the bakery for the yummy courgette keftedes and the "just warm" galactoboreko. Make sure you walk up to the ridge overlooking San Stef - a couple of bars up there with magnificent views on either side of the ridge. You have mentioned all of our favourite things - particularly Old Perithia and O Foros Taverna for walnut cake. You may want to consider doing the East Coast cruise from Kassiopi - that was a nice day, stopping off at a couple of places during the cruise. Have a great time! View Topic: First Time In Arillas |

Hi all,
My wife and I will be arriving in Arillas on the 9th of June for the first time, we have been to Corfu several times before but have never been to Arillas so we are looking for a few pointers from the more experienced visitors to this part of the island. We will be bringing our daughter and her fella who are both about 30 and have never been to Greece before and their two children who are 4 and 5. We are staying at the Marina hotel for two weeks, we have chosen self catering as going for a leisurely evening stroll and finding somewhere nice is a big part of our holiday and we wouldn't have it any other way. Our first night will be spent at the Marina enjoying the Greek night. Previously my wife and I have stayed in Paleokastritsa so we will be popping over there a few times I should imagine, we have also planned to take the kids to Aqualand, we will be renting a boat for a day, there will no doubt be a few trips in to Corfu town, across to Kassiopi, up Pantokrator, Old Perithia, the Achilleon Palace, Angelokastro, Erikousa (not sure if I spelled that right), a bit of snorkelling here and there and plenty of great food in all sorts of little tavernas but what we would like is some suggestions for what to see and do in and around the local area of Arillas both during the day and in the evening. I'm sure we will be fine but there is nothing worse than visiting somewhere and finding out when you get home that you missed out on a fantastic restaurant or a spectacular beach just because you didn't know it was there. 46 days to go. There is a walk around all the headlands between the two. But I have only done it from Ag Steph to Avalaki and not the other way around, so I am not ceratin how well signposted it is for the return journey.
It is a lovely walk and you see all the little bays and salt lakes between the two and should arrive on the beach by the Eucalyptus taverna. View Topic: Avlaki To Ag Stefanos |

Staying with Alex and Joanna at Katia Apartments (3rd time) on Koyevinas beach, so will be dividing our evenings out between Kassiopi and Avlaki Tavernas.

Hi, I have been a regular to Roda for last 6 yrs. The restaurant referred to by Daveneil we have never been to for the same reason but it is very well liked by a lot of people. Smileys, is also well liked but we just about walk on the beach to avoid being hassled. If you are staying at Theos, I am sure you will enjoy as it is one of the most popular places to stay though we have never stayed there. Our favourite places are,
Five Roses (formerly Opa) for food, views and service. Pangalos, food and views Drossia, food Nikos family Taverna, food Roxannes, drinks and views Pirates, air-conditioning, catching up on news and drinks/snacks There are plenty of others which I am sure will be listed. Hope you enjoy your stay. Bev.
