Corfu - Water

Shortage

Back to Top of Page
Most villas and apartments are sensibly built with an underground 'sterner'. This is used to store the rainwater that is collected from the roof during the winter months (and hopefully not during your stay!) and is used for the villa water supply. Consequently, it may be unwise to drink - although washing your hair with the water will leave it incredibility soft. When the sterner runs dry, water often has to be trucked in at great expense to the owner. Therefore, during your visit:
  • Do not water the garden without the owner's permission.
  • Make sure taps are not left running.
  • Take showers - although a bath with a close friend is permitted!
  • Power Cuts
If there is a power cut, you may find your water supply goes off, as water from a sturner is drawn via an electric pump.
Many new villas and apartments, are now supplied with mains water unless located in very remote areas. This water is safe to drink if boiled for tea/coffee etc, but it is advisable to check beforehand.
During your holiday, you will often spot a dolphin and occasionally even a whale.

    Can Your Drink the water

    Back to Top of Page
Your villa or apartment can have water from two sources:
    A Sterna
A sterna stores rain water that has been collected and is usually located under your villa
    Local Mains
The local water supply is usually of high quality as it is directly from the mountain (usually from a bore hole). The mineral content might be too high for delicate tummies (especially young children).
    Bottled Water
Generally, you would not have a problem drinking the local water, but to be on the safe side, we would recommened drinking bottled water.
